How To Begin Roleplaying

Tips from Ayumi
Hi I'm Ayumi and today I'll teach you how to roleplay. For those who are just starting out, I'll help you. With these tips I'm sure you can be become a good roleplayer someday. You can do this by thinking of plots or whatever you liked. Even when its to characters to how you want the plot to be in your rp.
First thing first is to think of a plot. Now don't think of anything too complex okay. Have your character go to a park or go shopping. Have fun with your idea, even if you want to go crazy. That's okay for beginners to branch out on what plot to pick out. It can even be a twist of both things that you might like.
Another thing you can do is think of characters to use. Sometimes you can use characters from fandoms. Like attack on titan, you can be anyone from the show. Of course, some people use their own characters. Which are called original characters or for short ocs. You can use any character as long as the partner is okay with it. Next paragraph I'll show you an example!
Eren was riding his bike. Today he was going to school. He did not like going there. It was important for him to go anyways. He did not like most of the lessons, but gym class was the best. He loved rock climbing, running and biking for gym class.

Tips from McMidget
Hi, I'm McMidget, but you can call me Midge. You want to know how to begin roleplaying, correct? Well I'm here to help! Role playing is rather easy once you get used to it, but starting can be rocky. Role play is the act of pretending to be an original character, or a character already thought up, and controlling their actions in a story based setting.
In order to start role playing, you need a character. Your character can be an OC, Original Character, or a CC, Canon Character. Examples of a Canon Character would be Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert. To create an Original Character (OC), you need to fill out their credentials. Physical Appearance, Mentality, Species, Gender, and Background are all key aspects your character needs.
Finally, you need a role playing style. It's always good to know how to roleplay in all styles, but you need to be comfortable with at least two. Roleplay styles include Script (Illiterate), Semi-Literate, Literate, and Advanced Literate. Script style is most common, where the role played uses asterisks* to show action. Semi-Lit can sometimes range from two sentences to a paragraph, in writing form, with quotation marks. Literate is generally two to three paragraphs of standard writing form. Advanced Literate is the same, but with more paragraphs, normally four and up. Please keep in mind when not talking about Semi-Lit, paragraphs are normally five sentences each.
For my example I will demonstrate Illiterate and Semi-Lit role play styles:
*Jumps onto roof, grabbing blade from ODM Gear* Eren, lookout it's a Titan!
"Eren lookout it's a Titan!" Mikasa shouts as she jumps to the roof, grabbing her blades from her ODM Gear.

Tips from Mikasa
Have you ever asked yourself “how do I roleplay” before? Or maybe, when checking a description of a chat, you find words you don’t understand, like ‘scrip’, ‘semi-lit’, or ‘literate’ roleplay. Well, you’re in luck! I have a few tips just for you.
On the surface, roleplaying (especially script) might seem easy. While it may look that way, it actually takes a lot of thought and effort into it. In all roleplays, you have to think of what your character would say or do in any situation presented. All that changes, if anything at all, is how much you write for a given role play. If it’s scripted, you’ll usually write one or two sentences. If it’s semi-lit, you’ll probably write around 3-6 lines (not to be confused with sentences). Now literate is when you really need to prepare your typing fingers, as it usually consists of 7-8+ lines. I would recommend starting out with scripted roleplaying, as it’s the easiest out of all three. Another tip: if your style is semi-lit or lit, you want to be more descriptive than how you’d be in scripted style. Don’t worry if, at first, you don’t master roleplaying. No one is perfect at it the first time. But practice will help you get better at it over time, just look at me ;). Wanna see an example of it? Don’t worry, I got you covered!
For the examples, I will be using Mikasa in the same situation in all 3 usual styles of roleplay.
Script style roleplay: *rides towards a tall tree*
Semi-lit style roleplay: Mikasa grabbed the reigns of her brown horse tightly, making sure not to let go of it as she rode towards her destination.
Literate style: The sky was cloudy and gloomy, as if nature knew what kind of day this would be: the monthly expedition. It filled the newcomers with dread and a small amount of excitement, as it was their first time outside of the three walls that protected the small world they lived in. A ravenette by the name of Mikasa, however, was already used to this life. Her green cape swayed in the wind as she rode her horse with her group, vigilant of any dangers that may come as they road towards a tall green tree.
I hope you found these tips useful and, if you still have doubts on anything, you can always read my fellow LT ’ tips or ask one of us for help. Until next time!

Tips from Hanji
Beginning Roleplay Tips!
There’s multiple different types of roleplay, but one of the most descriptive and used styles is known as literate. It ranges from semi lit to advanced literate. There tends to be a low amount of this style on most roleplay forums. Although it’s not as hard as it seems. Here are some tips as to get started.
——
Set up
Most role players are partially new to the concept and mostly rely on the script as a sense of comfort. The problem is that you can take a script styled line and turn it into a semi literate statement. For example,
Character A: *she walks over to you with sad eyes* I didn’t mean it! It was an honest mistake! I’m sorry if I made you mad... *looks down embarrassed*
~
This line has a lot of potential and it’s quite easy to make it into a literate roleplay format. 3rd person gives a more sophisticated and polished look so that’s what I’ll be using. I would take the pronouns out and replace them with character names. You’re trying to go for an authentic story feel. Try to read up on grammar rules and sentence structures. Knowing where to place commas and quotation marks can turn your writing from amateur into semi professional.
Character A: (Character A) walked over to (Character B) with her eyes full of sadness. “I didn’t mean it! It was an honest mistake..! I’m sorry if I made you mad...” She said as she looked down in pure embarrassment.
This second statement allowed a lot more energy to exerted through the writing. Don’t be afraid of giving dots to signal a brisk silence. Try to find new words that will make your reply’s more specific. Using loaded language can give certain sentences a powerful feel, evoking the response of the other roleplayer(s).

Tips from Dae
roleplaying for beginners!
I’m Dae and these are my best tips on how to perfect your literate roleplay! I’ll start with the...
DONT’S:
-don’t force a relationship / try and rp someone else’s character!
-don’t repeat the same sentence structures.
For example: “she walked over towards the door. She tried to keep quiet.”
An alternate way of phrasing could be: “her steps were light as she padded towards the doorway, not daring to draw attention to herself.”
-Don’t write too many paragraphs. No one wants to spend a longtime reading! But make sure that your text is still above the limit.
DO’S-
-show not tell! This basically means that you shouldn’t be telling the reader what your character feels, instead show it. EG: “her breathing quickened as she saw what was on the female’s finger. An engagement ring. She couldn’t do anything but force her features to a mask of neutrality when the dark-haired male rounded the corner. Her voice broke. “I see congratulations are in order..” this is better than “she was very upset, the male she was in love with was engaged to someone else”
-do use punctuation!! I cannot stress how annoying it is to read a paragraph with no commas nor full-stops. Always try and make it easy to read and understand, without punctuation it’s near impossible.

Tips from Casey
Hello, I'm Casey and I'll help you out with some tips on starting out as a roleplayer.
first of all, describe what your character is doing to lengthen out your paragraphs, and speaking in third person would just be a nice (not necessary) extra, make sure not to say "you" when describing others when your character isn't actually talking.
If you are completely new to rping, starting with script rp, is a wonderful beginning, it means you use asterisks to describe all your actions, I will give an example, for a semi literate paragraph, and a small example for a script rp message.
Semi Lit:
Levi walked through the slightly crowded hallways of the Survey Corps headquarters, his eyes fixated on the paper in his hands "Fucking eyebrows, making me do all his work..." He mumbled to himself in a low tone..
And now
script:
*walks through the hallways* Fucking eyebrows, making me do all his work.
Of course there's a more literate way of rping in script style, which is a good step in between the two styles, if you advance further, literate rping is also a lot of fun, if you have a creative mind that is, if not, it's still fun but a lot of thinking!
Those were my tips, I hope they helped at least one person!

Tips from Jimin
How to begin roleplaying ~ Jiminie tutorial
Introduction to role play
Hello guys it’s jimin with some tips on how to begin role play.I had a difficult start while beginning semi lit or literate role play and I mostly used asterisks.Role play comes in many forms but the main two are semi-literate and literate.Semi literate is a short paragraph or two that is let out as a response while literate is a series of paragraphs being very descriptive that is used as an addition to the story. Many people just use literate role play which is a way to role play easily and non descriptively using asterisks to represent the beginning and end of an action. There are lots of ways to improve and you should never give up while trying to!
A few ways to get started
There are many ways to begin roleplaying. Many tips can be found online along with videos. They were very useful for me and are still useful now as the roleplaying community always welcomes newcomers. You can ask a friend or a lit team member to role play to improve your skills! You can also public role plays to role play with many and see how others role play. practice makes perfect!
Examples of role play/improving role play
For example, if you were to say *goes to store* you could easily remove the asterisks and add a character name “Jimin goes to the store” the quality of the sentence is improved slightly, yet in order for it to be more literate we should alter the words and length of the sentence to make it descriptive as possible .”Jimin’s plaid yellow coat waved in the wind as his blonde hair was stroked by the boys tiny hand.He ed a beaming light, illuminating the the long black strips he drove upon.Jimin let out a sigh of relief as the bright red logo looking down on the city came into view. The blonde pressed stop on the car before grabbing his small leather bag that was a gift from a friend or rather a brother. The locks turned and the bright yellow lights came to life for just a second. The cold breeze brushed Jimin’s sensitive cheeks giving him a shiver as he had alas arrived at his destination.” Jimin going to the store can be way more detailed by adding different elements to the story such as physical appearance, additional actions, mental states, feelings,Character perspectives and even friends. In role play you should keep things interesting and descriptive ask a friend to practice with you or even message me!

Hello and get ready because we are gonna enter a world that is worth it if you do the right stuff! Rp? Oh it stands for role-play, a form of improv as a character but online meaning there are different variations of how to roleplay and who you are.
Now for who you will roleplay as depends on you. You can be a cannon, someone who exist within a show/movie/book, or your own OC, an orgianl character of your own to fit within a fandom. No matter who you choose you need to stay and portray that character right; other wise its ooc, out of character. A quick example is that you wouldn't see Levi going gaga over food like Sasha would.
Be warned, the top most common ways you will see rp is scripted and semi literate. No matter how you roleplay, you should always have ok grammer and clear actions/thoughts. Getting back to scripted and semi literate, one is more of a writing a paragraph and the other is quickly saying an action. The best way to think of it is the script of a movie/play and then the writing of a 3rd person book; read a few random ones if you dont know what I'm talking about. A quick example of both is..
Scripted
*Armin sees oceans* Its so beautiful*crys*
Semi Literate
The crashing of waves and crys of seagulls were something new but musical to the ears of the blonde. The book he once read about this and holds right now in his hand is swung to he beating chest, close and tight. He inhale the salty breeze once it caught hold in his hair and Armin looked out. Out as the blue sight and felt his eye water and fall with no hesitation.

My weekend was lit
I just skimmed through it, but I have another tip but idk if its there. Why don't you just read a bunch of books and practice how they were able to tell the story really well
Well, some people don’t really have the time for that. It’s also more of a writing tip than roleplaying, and roleplaying is a sub-category of writing, but different.
So, I wouldn’t say that would be a good tip, because you weren’t really applying to roleplaying, or peoples’ circumstances.
