Curious mermaid Mikasa has always been fascinated by the world above water, until her exploration of a wrecked ship exposes herself and her brother, Levi, to humans. With Levi captured by the humans, Mikasa dedicates herself to finding her brother and returning him to the sea where he belongs, but on her journey, bumps into hostile outsider, Eren. Meanwhile, on human land, Levi is taken captive in an aquarium, where loveable scientist Hanji seeks to learn about the sea creature and save his species from poaching, hunting, and the selfish evils of humankind.
