a book youre glad you read this year

minor detail - adania shibil

this tells the story of the struggle of palestinian

women, during two different timelines. the first

one is during the forced occupation of palestine

in 1949, where a palestinian girl is captured and

killed by israeli soldiers. many years later

a palestinian woman born exactly 25 years after

the crime becomes obsessed with this minor

detail in history, and tries to investigate it.

i think this is an important book to acknowledge

that what is happening in palestine right now has

been happening for 75 years, but palestinians are

just minor details to the western world and media.

a must read for next year

beloved - toni morrison

terrible, unspeakable things happened to sethe at

sweet home, the farm where she lived as a slave

for many years until she escaped to ohio. Her new

life is full of hope but eighteen years later she is

still not free. sethe’s new home is haunted by the

ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose

tombstone is engraved with a single word: beloved.

i love toni morrison and i got this book for my

birthday back in june, but i just never found the

time to read it. i definitely will next year.

most disappointing book of the year

forrest gump - winston groom

forrest gump retells adventures ranging from

shrimp boating and ping pong championships, to

thinking about his childhood love, as he bumbles

his way through American history, with everything

from the Vietnam War to college football becoming

part of the story.

this was such a disappointing book, because the

movie is just so good. in the book forrest is racist,

misogynistic and overall just not a likable person.

the story is also not realistic at all, and i’m so

confused as to why it has 4.03 rating on goodreads :weary:

a book you love but don’t usually recommend

a little life - hanya yanagihara

four college classmates move to new york. over the years their relationships, which are tinged by addiction, success, and pride, deepen over the decades, the men are held together by their devotion to the brilliant, enigmatic jude, a man scarred by an unspeakable childhood trauma.

i don’t know if i will ever stop thinking about this

book. i read all 800+ pages in four days, and i

don’t think i’ve ever cried so much, but i couldn’t

put it down.

it is such a hard and heavy book with so much

trauma that i could never recommend it to people.

a newly discovered author

sunil yapa

i had never heard about him until i picked up his

book ‘your heart is a muscle the size of a fist’

last month. it was way better than i had imagined

and he writes so beautifully. unfortunately i don’t

think he has published any other books, but

hopefully in the future 🤞
