Dotted vs squared notebooks and December doodles

A bit belated I know.

Not quite as organised as some of you!

What got me interested in bullet journalling was some of the inspiring creative spreads and the idea of keeping records and 'collections of things. I can't keep up with it every day so I'm just doing what I can.

I originally started out in a lined notebook because that is just what I had. I know many people use dotted ones but I was a little hesitant because I wasn't sure if it would be enough guidance for when I want to write. Also, when it comes to creating trackers, which I will show in a future posts, a squared grid is perhaps even easier in this aspect.

Christmas tree doodles are in a rhodia notebook.

The paper is really smooth and good quality. You can see the doodles on the other side of the page 'ghosting' but no 'bleeding'.

One reason why I haven't used the dotted notebook more is because it is staple bound and doesn't lie flat which just makes it a bit more difficult to use.

I've also got a dotted leuchtteurm. I've not really compared it with the rhodia regarding quality although they seem similar paper-wise.

December buys in squared Pukka pad

I tend to work late at night and in the evening when I have trouble with decent lighting and I can't really see what I am doing with the dotted grid so I'm sticking with the squared Pukka pad for now.

It's good value for money as there are a lot of pages although the paper is of average quality. I haven't had many problems with bleeding or ghosting, it just feels a bit thinner and more flimsy. It is also spiral bound which I thought would be good because I could tear pages out and then stick them in the other pad if I desired. However I think I would prefer one that isn't spiral bound as it means a double page spread isn't so easy when it comes to drawing lines and doing trackers that continue over 2 pages. I will show some of my trackers in this journal in a future post I think bullet journalling is about finding what works for YOU. I know there are many wonderful ideas out there but ultimately, if time spent artwork stops it from being functional which is what you may want from it, or the dotted or expensive pads aren't right for you or it just doesn't fit in with your lifestyle, or you keep procrastinating because you want it to be 'perfect' (something which I've seen a lot of mentioned online) then you need to think about your priorities and what you want from it. It seems to be a process and I think it helps us learn about ourselves 🙂
