Hello~

Today I present to you(yes, it’s the same intro again :joy: ) another drawing.

Time: 3.5 hours

Materials: Wacom Bamboo, Macbook Air

I’m very proud of this one, as it’s the product of two goals I had ever since I started drawing 9 months ago. As you may know, I have been experimenting with different art styles to try to find one on my own. I decided on trying for a semi-realistic art style, because it really drew me in.

Although it’s not perfect, I think this piece could definitely be considered semi-realistic! I’m happy with the skin coloring, as well as the speed of it—if you’re wondering how my skin coloring suddenly changed since my last pieces, it was kind of like a scientific breakthrough, but in my art. :joy: I was watching a speed paint of semi-realistic drawing, and decided to pause at the finished product to see how the colors blended together, and which colors were used where to give the drawing form. I tried applying the same technique to my own drawing, and to my surprise, it came quite naturally! I’ll definitely work on perfecting it to the best of my ability.

The second long-term goal I achieved was figuring out how to color hair. I’ve complained about my lack of hair-coloring ability many a post, and tried to fix it during many afternoons, always being unsuccessful. Since I teach myself how to draw, I basically rely on youtube tutorials for everything—and I finally stumbled upon one that explained the concept of highlighting and shading quite thoroughly, and in a way that I could grasp, unlike some very complex tutorials I couldn’t quite understand. I tried applying that idea to my drawing, and that worked, too. Comparing the hair I drew for this to my other drawings, I am very happy with it. However, I would like to work on making it more semi-realistic, to fit in with my skin style.

Other things I learned this time around that weren’t exactly goals, but definitely useful, were how to erase things not-so-thoroughly to create a fading look, like I did for the end of the shirt and triangles in the background, how to use different effects in the eyes, and how to draw without any lineart. Drawing without lineart is probably my favorite thing I learned out of the non-goal realizations, because I think that was a big factor in the semi-realistic, painted look, as well as the short time I managed to draw this piece in. I think the piece definitely looks a lot smoother when everything is painted, instead of filled in around lines.

Things I’m not so happy with include the eyes not really conforming to the style of the piece, the lips not standing out, and the hair being less semi-realistic than needed. On the next piece, I’ll try to work on those things!

You know what? If I ever replay the Mass Effect series & use Connor's face as a model for my Commander Shepard, this is practically blow-for-blow what I'd imagine him looking like!

Yeah. I just meant that I don’t play that game, so I don’t know what the game or who Commander Shepard is lol

You did great! I really love the hair, the clothes, and basically everything. You did beautiful on your attempted at realistic style!

But I still have one little anatomy and shading critique.

The forehead looks a bit funny, or to to be more precise! The little curve and shadow at the end of the forhead make it look like his hair is flapping off his head! Maybe a little less shade and drawing the left side of the forehead a little straighter and touching the hair strands will work.

I hope I said it precisely, I still love the piece! I know you work hard on and I can see it, that just a little quirk I found!

Hope you don't take offense!
