What is A Poem?

═════════╕

a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure.

╘═════════

So a poem is a piece of writing in which the words are arranged in a line. Most of the time those last 2 words in the sentences are usually rhyming to each other. Your poem is the idea that you use in which the sound of it when you read it aloud often will follow a specific rhyme.

╭═─────═⌘═─────═╮

EXAMPLE

Love is danger in disguise, we survived.

To believe is to have faith and desire.

You have walked outside of my dreams with fire.

╰═─────═⌘═─────═╯

Wanna hear the rest of it? Sure just message me in private. Anyways as you can see the final words must always rhyme. A word will rhyme if the other word's end has the same spelling as the other. Like Desire and Fire, Follow and Shallow, Survive and Alive, etc. Notice how the final letters rhyme from each other. Once you make them in a sentence I guarantee you that it will rhyme.

How To Make A Poem

(The Easy Way)

╭═─────═⌘═─────═╮

Let's make our lives easier shall we? I know that life is difficult nowadays and so, I will be giving you guys techniques on how to make poems. So if the Weekly Quest is about writing a poem, then you know what blog to read.

Take note that IF you are writting a poem because you want to describe a feeling that you have experience, then you don't need these tips. Only you experienced the feeling that you want to express, so only you will know whether your poem succeeds.

However, If you just want to communicate or express yourself to the reader, then just write that what you think is right and that will benefit the people reading your poem. Just make sure that it delivers a message and it has a good meaning into it.

╭═─────═⌘═─────═╮

Use Metaphor and Simile

Metaphor and Simile is to bring imagery and understanding to what you are writing. However do not over use them for your poem may look repetitive. that You don’t suddenly produce better poems if you replace all your similes with metaphors, or vice versa. The point to is that comparison, inference, and suggestion are all important tools of poetry, similes and metaphors are tools that will help in those areas. Wait, you don't know what a Simile and a Metaphor is? Well let google answer that question.

METAPHOR

Example: “The lead singer is an elusive salamander.”

This phrase does not mean that the lead singer is literally a salamander. Rather, it takes an abstract characteristic of a salamander (elusiveness) and projects it onto the person. By using metaphor to describe the lead singer, the poet creates a much more vivid picture of him/her than if the poet had simply said “The lead singer’s voice is hard to pick out.”

SIMILE

Example: “He was curious as a caterpillar” or “He was curious, like a caterpillar”

This phrase takes one quality of a caterpillar and projects it onto a person. It is an easy way to attach concrete images to feelings and character traits that might usually be described with abstract words.

Revise

═════════╕

The first completed draft of your poem is only the beginning. Poets often go through several drafts of a poem before considering the work “done.”

To Revise

Put your poem away for a few days, and then come back to it. When you re-read it, does anything seem confusing? Hard to follow? Do you see anything that needs improvement that you overlooked the first time? Often, when you are in the act of writing, you may leave out important details because you are so familiar with the topic. Re-reading a poem helps you to see it from the “outsider’s perspective” of a reader.

╘═════════

•❅──────✧❅✦❅✧──────❅•

Rhyme with Extreme Caution.

═════════╕

Rhyme and meter (the pattern of stressed and unstressed words) can be dangerous if used the wrong way. sing-song nursery rhymes? If you choose a rhyme scheme that makes your poem sound sing-song, it will detract from the quality of your poem.

I recommend that beginning poets stick to free verse. It is hard enough to compose a poem without dealing with the intricacies of rhyme and meter.

Finding a Topic

╭═─────═⌘═─────═╮

Go for a walk. Head to your favorite park or spot in the city, or just take a walk through your neighborhood. Use the people you see and the nature and buildings you as inspiration for a poem.

Write about someone you care about. Think about someone who’s really important to you, like a parent or your best friend. Recall a special moment you shared with them and use it to form a poem that shows that you care about them.

Pick a memory you have strong feelings about. Close your eyes, clear your head, and see what memories come to the forefront of your mind. Pay attention to what emotions they bring up for you—positive or negative—and probe into those. Strong emotional moments make for beautiful, interesting poems.

╰═─────═⌘═─────═╯

•❅──────✧❅✦❅✧──────❅•

Read Examples Of Poetry

═════════╕

To get a better sense of what other poets are writing, you may look through examples of poetry. You may read poems written in the same poetic form you are interested in or poems about themes or ideas that you find inspiring. You may also choose poems that are well known and considered “classics” to get a better sense of the genre.

╘═════════

•❅──────✧❅✦❅✧──────❅•

Write For The Ear

═════════╕

Poetry is made to be read out loud and you should write your poem with a focus on how it sounds on the page. Writing for the ear will allow you to play with the structure of your poem and your word choice. Notice how each line of your poem flows into one another and how placing one word next to another creates a certain sound.

For example, you may notice how the word “glow” sounds compared to the word “glitter.” “Glow” has an “ow” sound, which conjures an image of warmth and softness to the listener. The word “glitter” is two syllables and has a more pronounced “tt” sound. This word creates a sharper, more rhythmic sound for the listener

╘═════════

•❅──────✧❅✦❅✧──────❅•

Avoid Cliche

═════════╕

Your poetry will be much stronger if you avoid cliches, which are phrases that have become so familiar they have lost their meaning. Go for creative descriptions and images in your poem so your reader is surprised and intrigued by your writing. If you feel a certain phrase or image will be too familiar to your reader, replace it with a more unique phrase.

For example, you may notice you have used the cliche, “she was as busy as a bee” to describe a person in your poem. You may replace this cliche with a more unique phrase, such as “her hands were always occupied” or “she moved through the kitchen at a frantic pace.”

╘═════════

Read Your Poem Out Loud

═════════╕

Once you have completed a draft of the poem, you should read it aloud to yourself. Notice how the words sound on the page. Pay attention to how each line of your poem flows into the next. Keep a pen close by so you can mark any lines or words that sound awkward or jumbled.

You may also read the poem out loud to others, such as friends, family, or a partner. Have them respond to the poem on the initial listen and notice if they seem confused or unclear about certain phrases or lines.
