Additional Info/Clarification

For every unit, which includes both your's and your opponent's troops, buildings, or arena towers in a 7 tile radius of the Apprentice will activate his ability and apply 1 stack of it. He can have a maximum of 10. Because of this, the Apprentice's hit speed and damage will never really be how it is on his card, as he will almost always be around something that can increase his hit speed and damage. When he reaches 10 stacks, he cannot receive anymore and any other units around will not affect him. Anytime a unit near him dies, the nearest one will fill in and grant him a stack to compensate. If there are less than 10 units after, the Apprentice cannot gain multiple stacks from them and will only gain more stacks when more units appear in his sight range.

Example: My opponent sends a Goblin Gang at the bridge, and they start heading toward my tower. I place Fire Spirits and the Apprentice down. The Apprentice is in a position that allows him to see the Goblin Gang, the Fire Spirits, AND my arena tower. This grants him 10 stacks, doubling his DPS and Hit Speed. I kill the Gang with The Log. My apprentice now has 4 stacks and his Hit Speed and DPS is increased by 40%. The enemy Zaps my Fire Spirits as my Apprentice walks to my opponent's tower. He now has 1 stack, increasing his Hit Speed and DPS by 10%.
