A form of gypsum that gets its name from the Greek word meaning Moon because it was once believed the crystals waxy sheen was caused by previous exposure to moonlight. The Selenite group is considered to be formed by for crystals- Selenite, gypsum, desert rose & satin spar, although the group is largely ignored outside of collector circles. Pure gypsum crystals are colorless, but the presence of mineral inclusions such as sulfides, opal & copper can alter the hue.
