DMA Competition Yesterday

So, I had my first competition of the year yesterday, which was the Dance Masters if America Chapter 17 Solo Comp. I was honestly really scared for this competition because my studio didn’t go to this one last year so it’s been awhile.

Anyways, I had to go onstage at 2, so I spent the morning getting ready, putting on makeup, driving there (since the actual competition was 2 hours away), and getting my costume on. I met my friends at comp. I was one of the first solos of my studio to go onstage (mostly because I’m a bit younger than my friends) so my friends went backstage with me for and to watch. I did my solo, and afterwards stayed backstage to watch my friends.

My solo this year was a musical theatre solo, and this competition is known for favoring musical theatre, so I was feeling hopeful. Since I was the one dancing I had no idea how I had done, but my teachers/friends all said I had done well, so I guessed I did alright.

So awards comes, me and all my friends gather onstage and they start the adjudications. I got a high gold which is the second highest award you can get at this competition. (It goes bronze, silver, high silver, gold, high gold, platinum) Most of my friends go the same.

Then comes overalls. Now, last year, I got a lot of overalls at all different competitions, and my friends are counting on me getting one at this one, but I’m almost sure I won’t get one because this is a new solo, so I tell them not to hold their breath. They start announcing them for my age division. They get up to 6th place, and I’ve started to think that, yeah, I definitely DID NOT place at this one, which was okay because these judges were hard. And then the MC, who was actually one of my teachers, seemed surprised for a moment and called out my solo name for 5th place.

I. Was. Shocked. What??? Not only that, but the person who won 4th got a platinum, so that means not only was I in 5th place but I was the person with the highest score for high gold. I went up to get my award of course, but everything was kind of a blur. We took pictures afterwards with teachers, and with friends. We wrapped up in the dressing room, and all went on the long trip home. I was still just a little in shock. And to be honest I still am today.
