“I will have your voice!”
The Sea Witch is the villain in the fairytale "The Little Mermaid". She is part mermaid and works as a witch making potions. She is the mother of Coral Witch, but her husband is unknown. She lives in a cave with her daughter in the Sea Kingdom, aka the Merkingdom, in the Land of Ever After in the World of Stories.
“Oh, calm down, Philip. I’m not here to stir up the waters. I got a message from Milton Grimm, same as you.”
Character
Personality
The Sea Witch is a vain, mean and self-centered being with a high opinion of herself and her skills. Just her presence makes the water turn cold and create a sharp current around her. Despite her air of haughtiness, she loathes her singing voice. It is because of this that she collects voices and tries them on like hats. She also has a fierce temper that even her own daughter fears. While being part mermaid, she has no qualms about eating live sea creatures. She embraces her evil nature and destiny and like all witches, she cackles.
“Help you? I’m not here to help you! You two and your true love kept me from adding a beautiful mermaid voice to my collection.”
Appearance
The Sea Witch is rather large. She has long, tangled black hair which floats around her head. A few crabs live in her hair. She has black eyes and barnacles growing on her earlobes. The Sea Witch has a tail, but her tail differs from most of her fellow Merpeople. Not made of glistening scales, it is built of red armor, like a crab’s shell. Her voice is as rough and scratchy as sand, and as dark as a storm and prickly as a sea urchin.
“I’m here to help myself, of course!”
Interests
The Sea Witch is an avid collector of voices. But she’s sick of being the Sea Witch. She wants to become a famous singer and travel the world, which is why she wants Meeshell Mermaid’s voice.
“If I give you legs, and you go to school, and you make lots of friends, and you meet a dashing prince, blah blah blah, then you will fall in love with living on land and you will embrace your destiny. And I will have your voice!”

“Yeah, yeah, details, details. Whatever. I only care about one thing: completing my collection! Coral! Where are you?”
Relationships
Family
Coral Witch is the Sea Witch’s daughter. The Sea Witch is confident in her daughter's abilities and has faith in her. However, her wants and needs come before Coral's. It is assumed she has or had a husband, but it is unknown who he is. However it is known that he was not a Sea Witch, since Coral is only half Sea Witch.
“Seeing as this is a special request, I’m going to let my daughter cast the spell. She could use the practice.”
Friends
She is an associate of the Evil Queen, and one time she went to one of the Evil Queen’s evil dinner parties.
“Never mind that, darling. That stupid shark
seems fine with his new head of hair. We all make mistakes. That’s part of learning.”
Adversaries
She is destined story enemies with The Little Mermaid, named Queen Pearl, and her husband and Prince Charming, named King Philip. But
she’d made a pact with the king and queen. She would not bother them as long as they stuck to the story and gave her their firstborn daughter’s Meeshell’s voice.
“Of course it’s a good idea! Coral is perfectly
capable of replacing a Mertail with two human legs. Right, Coral?”
Pets
She has a bunch of fat sea snakes as her pets.
“Meet us at dawn, on the shore of Turtle Island.”
Powers/Abilities
The Sea Witch's emotions can control water, influence the weather, create storms, and make the whole ocean "roil and froth like a witch's cauldron".
“Coral, are you ready?”
As a witch, she can cast spells.
“Philip, my dear, you know there are no guarantees where magic is concerned. But Coral is my daughter, which means she’s extremely talented and intelligent, just like me. Anyhoo, as I was saying, Coral is perfectly capable of changing a tail into legs, aren’t you, darling?”
Backstory
When the famous Little Mermaid was a young woman living in the sea, she’d agreed to give her beautiful voice to the Sea Witch in exchange for legs and the chance to live on land. And so the deal was made, the Sea Witch cut out a little mermaid’s tongue to make a potion, and the Little Mermaid went to live among the land-dwellers, leaving behind the most beautiful singing voice in all the Merworld.
“Why are you asking your daddy to do something? He has no magic. We’re the witches. Talk to us.”
The Sea Witch had possessed Queen Pearl’s voice, but only for a short time. That changed when the story went in another direction and Prince Philip fell in love with his Little Mermaid and agreed to live below the waves with her. As is true in many fairytales, there is often a way to elude a witch’s dark magic: true love. In the Little Mermaid’s case, when she found the true love of a prince and he agreed to live beneath the sea with her, the curse was broken. Her voice returned to her.
“Let’s do this!”
Which left the Sea Witch without a beautiful mermaid voice to complete her collection. This sent the witch into such a rage that the sea roiled and frothed like a witch’s cauldron. So now the Sea Witch had to wait for the day when the Little Mermaid’s firstborn daughter would live the story her mother was supposed to have lived—to permanently exchange her voice for legs and life on land. And wait the Sea Witch did, counting the days until she got Meeshell’s voice.
“Go on, Coral, cast the spell. You know it by heart.”
Trivia
