Hot Take [Fallout Show]

Warning for spoilers maybe?

NOTE THIS IS MY OPINION, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIKE IT.

I know a lot of people enjoyed the show, i did to for a bit but slowly over time and as i watched it more and more and heard other views and opinions, i believe overall the show itself is mediocre possibly at best. There are some scenes i like and i believe it is heavily carried by Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell’s acting (say for a few parts).

I feel that there are a lot of contrivances with the story (mostly between the Ghoul and Power Armor), lore and timeline retcons (yes it does retcon various big parts of the timeline), as well as has severe flaws with the writing and how certain events transpire as well as character motivations.

1st: First event that was a bit of a red flag to me was when the scientists escaped the enclave and outrunning a minigun with no injuries. Thats just dumb and the LUCK argument doesnt work for something like a show. The SPECIAL stats in game of course affects certain aspects but in world its more of just seeing what people are good at (at least thats how i see it)

2nd: Coop or Max should have died in Filly. Nothing else to say because of what happens to the

ghoul with one punch and then later how the Ghoul effortlessly takes on Power Armor wearers.

3rd: I love the Ghoul but until the very end of the season he has no established motivations, ultimately you just come to the conclusion that he merely wants to survive for as long as he could on his timer, but when he reveals that he’s waited “200 years to ask this one question” he says it like its been his goal throughout the season.

4th: Moldaver shouldn’t be alive and theyll probably make up some reason why she is in the second season, but she was fired from Vault Tec, so she shouldnt have had any access to cryo tech unless she somehow found other places that do which is unlikely since VT was kinda only known for that. Shes also inconsistent as she tries to act like a messiah like figure but kills countless innocent people in vault 33 and almost killing the one character she somewhat cares about. She’s also a commie, she claims she isnt but still everyone in her group refers to themselves and the meetings as communist meetings. She tells instead of shows.

5th: Max… i just dont like max’s story and i feel like the actor didn’t help.

6: WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH GHOULS IN

GENERAL?! Coop is a machine that tanks incredible amounts of damage, but a feral ghoul goes down with one pistol shot. And now suddenly theres a drug that staves off going feral? Which isn’t how going feral works cause its dependent on exposure to rads. If it was radaway i wouldnt see an issue but its a specific vial that Coop huffs. AND now a strange drug from a chicken fucking snake oil salesman can just turn people into ghouls with insane healing with no visible consequences like typical ghouls have (minus having healing)

7: Waterchip, literally just a keychain to rattle and say “Huh? that? that from the game?” Never comes up again.

8: Lucy suddenly jumping from innocent person to horndog is just kinda weird to me? Especially with dudes she’s relatively just met.

9: [SPOILER]

The ENTIRETY of the vault tec meeting including Mr House. This is crazy because of the pre-established lore of Mr House preparing Vegas in his own way for the war. His projections leading him to isolate himself to early because they were wrong. NOW BECAUSE VAULT TEC STUPIDLY IS THE CAUSE FOR IT, he is stupified because he knows when the bombs were gonna fall and if he is in his isolation tank like the games, it just makes him late again to the end of the world. Regardless of why he was there he (whether it was to play politics or not) wouldve known when the bombs would detonate and it would no longer result in how he was in FNV unless they retcon that too.

10: Fucking Vault Tec, we know they were shady already but with the meeting and destroying the world they went from shady corporation and a prime example of corporations in extreme power to just actual villains and then used as an example of why capitalism is bad even though you can’t have a free capitalist system when the entire world is fucking destroyed. Its retarded.

I wanted to like the show and I’m on my knees praying like Joshua Graham that season 2 can SOMEHOW pull me back in, but as of now its not looking good to me. The show had so much potential and it still does, but it meeds to have the actual confidence to do its own thing free from the games plot points to use as easter eggs. Lucy has a decent arc by the end of S1 (with a few spontaneous hiccups) and the Ghoul is still a cool overall character (made better now that his actual goals and motivation are solidified). I still like it in a sense mostly because it has great potential (both in future seasons and roleplays) and if you like the show, good on you. This isn’t me trying to just shit on people who like the show, its me trying to point out flaws and kinda maintain what has come before it (and 4’s retcons) that were so great. However I refuse to just not atleast share my thoughts as I get Halo TV Series flashbacks while watching Fallout.

Thanks for reading.

People who praise this show are either tourists that many won’t stick around for long, Bot s who try and stop people criticizing it or people that just easily consume product and then claps when they saw the thing

The Show is a such a disgrace

I mean Todd Howard probably hit a bunch of Obsidian’s dogs. Though i dont agree to the extent of Doc i do believe that the more it falls apart it becomes and even bigger let down. It genuinely felt like Bethesda was wiping stuff from Obsidian’s work :joy:

My man that’s writing, plot contrivances are going to happen when you’re given an IP that has been telling a connected story in short installments for almost thirty years.

Most of your complaints are nitpicks, that’s just being honest. This show was not made to please die hard fallout fans if it was it would not have been as successful with the wider audiences and as a result we wouldn’t be getting new fallout content. This has proven that Fallout has appeal with audiences out side of video games and that’s huge. I think your heart is in the right place because you’re clearly a big fan, but I think you’re missing the wider picture.

You’re just excusing lazy writing. Max was standing still before Cooper cut his component that made him fly off because t-60 has arm thrusters now for some reason. And could have shot him in the weak spot. Why write him in that position in the first place? You say he didnt have to waste the bullet but he uses NUMEROUS rounds from his lever gun which were visibly doing nothing.

Look at the example of Joel from TLOU, he is super smart and careful and tries to be as careful as he can. He was then tackled and almost died by falling on a piece of rebar which took countless days if not weeks to heal enough for him to move.

I’m not saying Coop or Max HAD to die (though with how the fight went out one of them should especially with coops knowledge of the armor), but at the very least one of them should have been seriously injured in some regard. Max crashed just outside the town and still got his shit fixed that same day. Coop just walked out as fine as he was when he arrived.

It seems like you’re mad about every single small change that was made. My suggestion to you if this is the case, is to stop being a fallout fan. Retcons and late additions are the regular for the this series.

The Last of Us show is not the example you want to use for weak writing my man. It was like 60% fluff and filler.

“Though with how the fight went one of them should.” You’ve decided upon an outcome and decided that if that doesn’t happen it’s weak writing or inconsistent with lore, this is the case with almost all of your complaints.

Dude i know people in twd have insane plot armor, i can still say they’re stupid writing decisions. I think Rick should have died especially on the bridge. Youre acting like im looking differently when it comes to the subject.

Again I KNOW AN MC NEEDS SOME DEGREE OF PLOT ARMOR. but it needs to be written well instead of being so blatant especially when later on its turned out to be the result of a contrivance. MC doesn’t HAVE to die but they shouldnt be written into a situation and come out COMPLETELY unscathed.

Courier 6 was shot in the head and survived true. Very few people can get shot in the head and live but most people die. But he was not unscathed at least lore wise: lost his memory and spent several days under the knife. I dont think its the greatest beginning to a story, certainly the most distinct from the other beginnings, but like you said Plot Armor, everything says that 6 surviving was nothing short of a miracle and that’s apparent cause literally no one else can survive being shot by a 9mm in the head. 6 in general could DIE but the mechanics of a game are different from the medium of film and video.
