Mendel is the first dead, he probably got injured and Trina was there and had to make the choice whether or not to leave him and risk him being infected and killing them all. His true selfishness was shown when he begged for Trina to risk Jason to save him, though when she showed hesitation he changed his mind, realising the implications of his ask, and asked her to leave him. She chose to leave him for the sake of her son, not wanting him to risk his life. In mendels last moments he saw himself as a martyr dying for the well-being of others, though he was filled with fear and regret.
Charlotte is obviously the medic, she is smart and medically trained. She is skittish to begin with and does everything to protect Cordelia, but she hides her fear with a Brave face. She is ready to fight for their survival. Jason and Cordelia are her top priority, she teaches them basic medical skills just incase she were to die something she worries about daily. She isn’t scared of death, she is just scared of leaving Cordelia behind in the apocalypse.
Jason is the brains of the group, he is distraught when the apocalypse first starts but his mother protects him from the first outbreak and the attack that kills Mendel. From the moment of Mendel’s death he becomes incredibly collected and holds the group together, leading the group as best he can before his father takes over. He is smart and watches Zombie behaviour from a distance which helps educate his father and anyone who ventures out, when not being taught by Charlotte about medicine. Whizzer is his closest confidant in his times of need.
Whizzer is the mascot, he is Jason’s biggest er and completely embraces him as the brains. He is able to reassure trina after she was made to leave Mendel, helping her whenever she needed it even though she was hesitant to open up at first. He does his best to help Charlotte with anything she needs, and helps Cordelia everytime she seems to have trouble. As the apocalypse first started, Marvin became distant, though over time and after an incident where whizzer was nearly killed, they have grown closer than ever.
Cordelia shuts down after Mendel dies, even though she hadn’t been present for his death she feels incredibly helpless. The apocalypse makes her feel like a dead weight to the group and she is incredibly emotional. She tries to offer help to Charlotte, but she feels overwhelmed and stressed out. Whizzer helps her calm down, and so does Charlotte and after a little while she becomes incredibly helpful. Her cooking skills, though iffy have made it so they are able to stretch food further with her ability to save and reuse food. She has even begun to grow a small garden of primarily mushrooms and other fast growing veggies, the garden keeps her calm too.
Marvin he is arguably one of the harder ones to appoint. He desperately wants to lead them, but he feels helpless. When the apocalypse first starts, he shuts down. He becomes quite and angry, being the first to volunteer to go out of the bunker and get supplies. He is able to make a range of weapons in a short amount of time, though he isn’t the most skilled with using them, a fair portion of his strength comes from anger and brute force. However as the apocalypse continues on, he becomes more skilled with weapons and even at one point rescues whizzer from a small horde, something that secures their relationship. This incident opens his eyes to the true possibilities of them all dying, despite at this point Mendel being dead for a while, and he steps into the role of leader being more calm and collected. He does his best to keep them out of trouble, and is the first one to fight off any danger, wanting to keep his family safe.
Trina she is the hardest. After Mendels death she becomes attached to Jason, but he pushes her away. This distance between the two of them makes her yearn more for freedom and life to return how it was, though she hides this as best she can, only breaking the façade when whizzer confronts her privately about it. She becomes closer to whizzer and having someone to talk to helps her recover to the point she is able to fight back. She turns into a very strong fighter, having enough medical knowledge to help in the field when she ventures out, and enough fight in her to survive. She is a powerful survivor throughout this, and is not willing to let her family die. Not any of them.
Additional notes because that wasn’t enough, Whizzer is a fighter. He is able to hold his own. He refuses to back down, which is how he was nearly killed. Marvin being forced to face their own mortality becomes scared, being reminiscent of his childhood with having suicidal ideations like when he was a boy, though he does his best to keep it hidden.
The only thing Marvin likes about the apocalypse is that he finally has a tight knit family, people who he can Truely rely upon.
