If you have any additional thoughts/stories, let me know! I'd love to hear what you have to say

For me, it depends, but usually leans more towards no. There's a difference between getting an animal that the receiver has done no research and doesn't have the supplies versus the receiver who has done research and has the supplies necessary. I don't want to judge people, but I am always weary of people who get animals for Christmas due to my experiences. It doesn't tend to be good. There's a lot of layers to this, like family buying an animal you keep but not realizing you can take on more than one, people who want an animal but have done no research, people who impulse buy an animal from a not so good source, etc.

Usually, impulse buys are not a good idea, and truly, I think impulse buys are animals that you have no supplies or knowledge to care for rather than having things at home that you can easily keep the fish/animal in. Yes, you impulse bought the animal, but you're capable of caring for it properly versus a person who has a fish they don't know what to do with besides toss in a bowl.

This is a topic I like to bring up since it's very relevant during this time of the year, and since I live on a farm, I am not excited for after the holidays for any animals that might get dropped off. Or seeing the social media posts of poor animals that are treated as a thing than a living being. Or anything else of that nature.

I think it’s fine if the person you are giving the animal to has done research and has a proper set up. You also need to ask the person if it’s okay first... I know people who have got fish or turtles from others for presents and had to give them to a pet store the next day because the person who got the animal was not prepared and didn’t have enough time.

I personally would not buy someone an animal as a gift though.

Ive seen a lot of shelters in my area, either shut down giving away dogs/cats during the winter season or charge extra. I feel like supplies for the specific pet would be better and then like let the person pick of their desired pet

I think in certain cases it could be fine. If you’re giving someone an animal they have no idea how to care for or are unprepared for, that’s messed up, but if you’re giving someone say, a fish from a species they already keep and that can live in the tank they already have, I don’t think there’s too much of a problem. I think the best way to do it would be as a planned gift honestly, so that way the person can make sure they’re prepared and are getting something they actually know how to care for. It wouldn’t be as much of a surprise in this case but honestly that might be a good thing lmao!
