Joel was born in Florida to a middle-to-upper class family. His mother was a Nurse and his father was one of the leading engineers for some Military Firebases, and even designed the Anvil hangar layout. Joel attended a Charter School throughout elementary, middle, and high school. It was in his tenth grade year when he was involved in a severe accident, resulting in the loss of his left arm and lower right leg after being in a gas tanker explosion. Joel managed to push through the physical therapy to recover from the incident and finished high school.

After the Union's invasion of New York, the Union began its conquest of the Eastern United States unmatched by the Polity forces. Joel was forced to evacuate with his family, and would stay with his father who continued to work at Breakpoint Firebase in Colorado. Four years after the initial attack, Joel was finally ed by the E.S.U. about the Gen:Lock program. He happily accepted the invitation to the program and ed nearly all the tests with high scores, although he is on a watch list due to his PTSD from the explosion years ago. He has since been transferred from civilian family living at Breakpoint Firebase to full Military Commission at the Anvil.
