STAYC — [S] Album Review

hai ^^! so this is pretty late ngl (almost a month late) but here i am with an album review! there's been many comebacks in k-pop lately, like the boyz 'vvv' , seulgi 'baby, not baby' , le sserafim 'hot' (check out vylith's review here!) and many more. but today we're focusing on stayc's comeback 'bebe'.

who is stayc?

stayc is a 6 member girl-group under high up entertainment. they debuted on november 12, 2020 with 'so bad'. the group is known for their amazing title tracks like: 'so bad' , 'asap' , 'stereotype' , 'run2u' , and 'poppy'. there are many good songs from them, but those have given them the most recognition. : sumin, sieun, isa, seeun, yoon, and j. the leader position often switches, but as of now there is not an official one

(they debuted with sumin as the leader and she's still commonly referred to as "stayc's leader").

Album Review

overall, i consider the album to be one of my favorite releases from the group. they explored a similar sound to their previous track 'poppy' but with the styling and edginess of 'cheeky icy thang' which i find mesmerizing as they've been transitioning from an edgy to cute concept with each comeback. this album also encourages self acceptance rather than self-love, which is also important, but i think accepting yourself comes before loving yourself so i think it's great that the producers choose this route instead of the regurgitated "love yourself" songs / messages that are usually made + i love how they focused on it too, from the lyrics to choreo i think it was executed very well and i like, if not love, it a lot.

BEBE

genre(s) — diva house & funky house

a newer style of stayc, most similar to their earlier release 'cheeky icy thang'. at first i found it a bit uneasy with how the beats would change and fuse within each other, however it grew on me very quickly with the second listen. - it is one of my favorite releases this year and stayc already got their first win with this song too which i think is amazing ^^!

Diamond

genre(s) — contemporary r&b & afro

i LOVE this song. but also i really love slow songs in general and this is a slow song, however it's also really catchy- i fear because it is also repetitive. "di-dum-dum-dum" scratches my brain jus right. also the message is really sweet as well, the songs speaks about shining brightly as you are and not changing for other people- instead trying harder to be as you are to make everyone realize you're that person.

Pipe Down

genre(s) — pop r&b

- honestly, my fav track on the album. i'm so glad they're promoting it alongside bebe. the beginning reminded me a lot of 'gpt' which i thought was pretty cool but also a close call as they coulda got criticism for that. regardless i would say it's maybe the better track of the album. as much as i love bebe, pipe down is a lot easier on the first lesson, it's message is also sweeter as well. pipe down doesn't speak down on others, but rather tells them to mind their business in a way. you shouldn't mind what people have to say about you- yes it is annoying, but at the end of the day "you have to figure out that nobody will be there". you have only yourself at the end of the day and anyone who speaks poorly of you for being yourself are "weird" and should "pipe down".
