The transmission came in as a surprise.
Normally, whenever Dib was out fighting with Zim or stopping one of his plans, Bug would just chill back at his base and do whatever she felt like doing. Some days, she would doodle on the walls with Gir. Others, she would just nap. Today was one of those days.
It was a gentle Sunday evening, and Zim had run out to the park to go poison the river or something of the sort. Bug hadn’t really been paying attention when he was talking about the “brilliant plan” anyway. She just looked forward to getting to relax in a more peaceful base for the rest of the day. Bundled up in a blanket she had stolen from Dib’s once, the happy Irken threw herself onto the couch and let her eyes rest.
It had been a good couple of hours of peace, but there was always a small voice inside of Bug that worried for the both of them. She’d hate seeing either of them getting severely hurt while fighting, even if they already did this quite often. Though she knew she should never step in. She WAS neutral, after all.
When she received the transmission, Bug hadn’t known what the sound was at first. Half awake she sat up, taking out her communication device from her pak to see what was up. Surprisingly, it was a single message from Dib. A single, one word message that chilled her to the bone. It read… “Help”.
Immediately she shot up, untangling herself from the blanket and turning on her disguise before racing out the front door. She pulled up a map, heading in the direction of the park Zim had mentioned earlier. It wasn’t a long run considering she had taken out her pak legs. She could sense something was incredibly wrong.
The park was a mess. Benches were either flipped over or broken entirely, large tree branches covered the ground, and the playground was somehow on fire. But Bug didn’t care about any of that. She was putting her Irken sight implants to good use, searching the entire area for any sign of Dib. All seemed hopeless until she heard a faint sound of what she knew was Dib’s voice, the shakiness causing her to panic. She followed the direction of his voice until she reached a small clearing in the middle of the trees. In the middle of it sat Dib, who was clutching his arm with a pained expression on his face.
“DIB!” Bug called to him. She put away her pak legs and ran over to him herself, immediately crouching beside him and observing his injuries. His face was covered in small scratches, some of which had small trails of drying blood falling from them. His nose seemed to be bleeding, but it was his arm Bug was most worried around. It was bent in a rather awkward way, a way that she was certain wasn’t normal for a human.
“T-Took you long enough…” Dib managed to say before wincing. Bug rolled her eyes.
“Oh hush. We need to get you out of here. Does your dad have medical supplies in his lab?” she asked, helping him to stand.
“Yeah, I-I believe so.” The pain in his voice made Bug impatient. It would take them ages to get to his house at this pace. That’s when she decided to scoop him up into her arms and take out her pak legs once more.
“There. That’s much better, right?” She gave him a reassuring smile, beginning their short journey to his house. Dib did a soft nod before resting his eyes. Bug said nothing more until they made it down into his father’s lab.
“Hey! That burns!”
“Do you want me to help you, or not?”
Bug huffed as Dib rolled his eyes. She had managed to do a small operation on his arm and get it into a stable cast, and now she was merely cleaning up the scratches on his face. He was being rather grumpy about it, too, which she didn’t understand. She was helping him, so he should be grateful, right? Right!
Bug eventually got the small cuts cleaned and bandaged despite Dib’s grumbles. She handed him a cold pack to hold to his nose, though it seemed it was already forming a bad bruise. Luckily it wasn’t broken, like his arm. “Is that better?” she asked him in a more calming tone.
Dib sighed, eyeing her with a defeated look. “Yeah, thank you.” His face grew red when Bug reached up to pull a leaf out of his hair.
“So… what happened out there? Did Zim do this to you?” The disguised Irken showered him with questions about the day’s events.
“Sort of,” Dib replied. He sat up on the medical table he had been laying on. “He built this robot bodyguard thing, which just turned out to be a bigger version of that stupid servant he has. I tried everything I could to get around that thing and stop Zim from poisoning the river, but eventually it just had enough and quite literally threw me away. The scratches are from the bush I hit, but my arm slammed into a tree. That’s… when I messaged you. Zim had long gotten away by the time you got there.”
Bug looked at him with pitiful eyes. “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, Dib. Sure, Zim got away, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is you’re alive. To be honest, I always get scared whenever you and Zim fight with each other. Who knows what could happen?”
Dib reached forward with his good hand and rested it on Bug’s shoulder. “I’ve vowed to never let him win, Bug. And that means he’ll never defeat me. I may get hurt, but he’ll never get rid of me. I promise.”
His warming smile was rather contagious.
