Chapter Three: Fitting In
Bug sat on the couch watching TV with GIR. The colored blobs moved around on the screen in an orderly fashion, and she grew bored. GIR seemed happy, however, his eyes locked on the screen. Bug looked around and found a bin full of scrap metal. She climbed off of the couch and took the bin outside. She sat near one of the garden gnomes and began tinkering around with the scraps.
Large, dark clouds loomed ominously overhead. After an hour or so of building, Bug looked at her little creation. Her own robot! It didn’t look great, but she hoped she could find a way to make it work. A large rumbling interrupted her thoughts. She picked up the little robot and stood up, the bin of extra metal in her other hand.
Bug looked up at the sky as the clouds grew darker. Another rumble and liquid started falling from the sky. She recognized the Earthly water and felt little droplets land on her head.
Suddenly, they started to burn.
“AHHH!” she screamed, accidentally throwing the robot and the bin through one of Zim’s windows. The commotion she was creating was drawing the attention of a lady with an umbrella nearby. The lady looked over at her and shrieked.
“An alien! An alien!”
Bug looked up and saw that she’d been noticed, but not long after, she was dragged away into the house.
“Fool!” Zim shouted, the door closing behind him. “We don’t want to draw attention to us! We’re supposed to be normal, like all the other human-filthies!” Bug looked up and saw that he was wearing a wig and lenses. He looked human, besides his green skin which he didn’t seem to care about.
“Why… does it have to… burn?” she groaned, shaking off the excess water from her clothing. She looked over at GIR, who was playing with her unconscious robot.
“Because that’s how it is,” Zim explained. He walked over to the broken window and peered out. “A little soaking in some paste will stop it, but the important thing is that we aren’t spotted. Looks like you’ll need a disguise if you ever want to leave the house.”
“A disguise?” Bug asked. “Like yours?”
“Yes. Computer?”
“Yes, master,” a deep voice answered.
“Send down the vootcruiser’s disguise creator.”
“Yes, sir. Right away.”
A circular shaft lowered from the ceiling and the cruiser was on top. It placed itself in front of them. Two oval like semi-circles protruded from the machine, along with a large screen. Zim walked up to it, beckoning for Bug to follow. He scrolled through the options on the screen until he fell upon what looked exactly like Bug, except she had lenses and a purple wig with hair that curled at the end. It didn’t look as good as the others she had seen.
“Now stand here.” Zim pushed her back a little and stepped aside. The two oval pieces enclosed around her, creating a tight room. Lights flashed extremely brightly and lenses were shoved into her eyes. Bug yelped in pain. She could feel her antennae being squished by the wig. The room opened back up and Bug walked forward.
“I’m a genius!” Zim yelled. Bug rubbed her eyes and watched as the vootcruiser was lifted back into the attic. “What do you think?”
“I hate it,” she replied.
“Excellent! Now go test it on that lady outside.”
“Ooooookaaaaaaayyy,” Bug sighed. She opened the door and looked out. Sure enough, the lady was still standing there in disbelief.
“I’m normal!” Bug shouted, and the woman shook her head and walked away. “Hey, that work- AHH!” The rain started to burn again and she quickly rushed inside.
“Great work,” Zim said, taking off his disguise. Bug did the same, her eyes relieved to be free of the lenses. She stored the disguise into her pak. “When you can, make sure to take an hour to soak in the paste solution I made to protect from the rain.” He said the word with disgust. “GIR!”
“Yes, my lord,” GIR said, the lights that glowed blue on him now red.
“If there’s going to be another robot in the base, MAKE IT USEFUL! I’m going down to the lab to come up with my next plan to destroy the humans. Don’t disturb me!” He walked into the kitchen and climbed into the toilet. He pulled a string that was hanging nearby, and he disappeared into what Bug assumed was a ageway to the lab. She turned to GIR, who was struggling to carry Bug’s robot, who was the same size as him. Bug took her creation from him and said, “Where to?”
He giggled and ran over to the trash can in the kitchen. He opened the lid and pointed inside, then jumped in. Bug dropped her robot down the chute and barely fit inside herself.
The chute led to a large room with a lot of equipment for making weapons. GIR was sitting next to her robot on the ground, humming while he pulled a toy moose out of his head.
Bug walked around the room and found a bin of computer chips on one of the desks. She smiled as she took one. Looks like those extra coding classes I took at the academy are finally gonna pay off. Bug looked at the machine next to her. A programming machine. Perfect. She opened a slot and clicked the blank chip in, then turned to the computer attached to the machine. Alright, let’s make her a personality. Follow tasks correctly? Definitely. Listens to me? Of course! How about some repair skills? Let’s give her a purple glow. Hmmm… what else? Bug looked over at GIR, who was sitting patiently while she entered the coding into the machine’s system. “What’re your favorite foods, GIR?”
“TACOOOOOS!” He screeched, jumping up and running around. “OOO! And burritos too! AAAAAAND WAFFLES! AND, AND, AND, CUPCAKESSSS!!! WAAAAAAOOOOOOO!”
Bug giggled and entered each of the human food items into the coding. She pressed the start button and the machine made little laser noises, and not long after, the chip was finished and Bug took it out. She held it up to the light and saw the little ridges of coding inscribed onto it. GIR opened the lid of her robot’s head and she placed the chip inside. The little servant jumped to life, her eyes, shoulders, wrists, antennae, and the circles on her stomach all lit up with the purple color Bug wanted.
“Greetings, my master,” she said, the purple turning red as she saluted to Bug. “BIT, reporting for duty.”
“BIT?” Bug asked. “What does BIT stand for?”
“Basic-issue Information and Technology Unit, ma’am,” she responded.
Bug looked over at GIR, who was staring impatiently at BIT.
“Now run along and play with GIR,” Bug ordered.
“Yes, ma’am.” BIT turned purple again and turned to GIR, who squealed with excitement and pulled a few cupcakes out of his head. The two ran down the hall and Bug heard a crash.
“GIR! GET OUT OF HERE!” She heard Zim shout from another room nearby. “I TOLD YOU TO LEAVE ME ALONE!”
Bug giggled as the floor tile beneath her lifted into the air to take her back to the house level. She yawned and sat down on the couch, drowsiness falling over her. Then, she fell asleep to the sounds of GIR and BIT fighting over what channel to watch.
“Get up! Invaders never sleep! Besides, we have to go to skool.” Bug opened her eyes to see Zim in his disguise.
“Skool?”
