Movement. Small shuffling. Sure, it was the tiniest of noises, but the paranoid boy woke right up. “Mmm... Bug...?”
He felt around. It seemed like she was still there, right under his arm. He yawned and rubbed his eyes, reaching for his glasses off his nightstand. He slipped them on and caught a glimpse of his alarm clock; 1:00 AM.
Dib looked down at the sleeping Irken, who upon closer inspection turned out to just be a pillow. Where was Bug?
Dib sat up and reached to turn his lamp on, peering around his dimly lit room. The little alien was no where to be seen. “Bug?”
A chilly breeze brushed along his skin. Dib shivered and turned around, noticing his now open window. He looked out the window, but Bug wasn’t in his front yard, either. Had she gone on the roof? But why?
It was quite cold out that night. Dib had draped a blanket over himself before climbing out of the window and onto the roof. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dark, but once they did he could see the familiar outline of his Buggy sitting right in the center of the roof, staring up at the sky and facing away from him. He doubted she even knew he was there.
Dib slowly walked over, crouching down to sit beside her. He wrapped the blanket around them both, then looked up at the night sky as well. Ah, shooting stars. So that’s why she came up here.
“You really like the stars, don’t you Buggy?” Dib gently nudged her.
Bug flinched as if she had been snapped out of a trance. “O-Oh! Yeah... they’re beautiful, aren’t they?” She had a look of wonder on her face, one Dib had never seen from her before. She looked back up at the sky, but Dib just couldn’t keep his gaze away from her.
It was as if the moonlight was making her lime green skin glow. The reflection of the stars twinkled in her lavender eyes, and every time she blinked they seemed to sparkle brighter. It was as though she belonged to the stars. Like she was one of them.
“You’re staring at me, aren’t you?” Bug broke both his thoughts and her gaze at the sky, looking over at him with an amused face.
“N-No!” Dib stammered. “I-I- uh-“
She interrupted him with a giggle. “You tend to do that, don’t you?”
“Ahah... I guess I do...” Dib stared away awkwardly, but then looked back when he felt Bug crawl into his lap. She pulled the blanket closer around them and looked back up at the light show above them.
Dib leaned back to lay on the roof instead, pulling her on top of him. It’d be easier to look up at the sky this way, anyways.
“Hey... Bug...” he spoke softly. The small alien flicked an antenna to assure him that she was listening. “I never really understood why you’d want to stay here on Earth. It’s such an ugly place compared to space and it’s stars. Why don’t you ever just take a ship and live out there? You’d probably enjoy it way more...”
“But you wouldn’t be there.” Bug flipped over onto her stomach and rested her chin on his chest. “Space is no home. I’m happy right where I am.” She smiled at him with her tongue out.
“A-Are you sure?” Dib gave her a skeptical look. “I don’t want you to stay here if you’re... not happy.”
“Now who said I wasn’t happy?” Bug laughed, then leaned forward to peck his cheek. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, being here! Being here with you!” She reached forward to squish his face. “Now just because I love looking at the stars does not mean that I like them better than you! You worry too much, human.”
“I get that a lot.” Dib chuckled. “I’m sorry Bug. I’ve just never been friendly with an alien before, let alone... love one. I didn’t know if the ‘stars were calling to you’ or something like that.”
“No! That’s too cheesy!” Bug laughed again, letting go of his face.
“I’m serious!” Dib retorted. “It’s like you glow under the starlight! Like you belong up there, with the rest of the stars.”
“Oh really?” The Irken smirked, making herself comfy on top of him.
“Heh, yeah. It’s almost like... you ARE a star.” He reached a hand forward to brush against her face. She closed her eyes and purred against his hand. “But not just any star. MY star.”
