The way he even made it to Earth is that he met Dib by drinking at the same bar and it spiraled into him going to earth with him so that Dib could study his species while Niv studied Dib's species (Humans.) Niv rather enjoys annoying Dib by calling him "Doc" as a nickname which I personally find funny for some reason

(There may be something between them. MAY is the most important word.)
