It was a cold winter morning. The sun’s rays caressed the faces of the sleepy students
that slowly walked towards school. The wind sneaked in between their hair locks and
under their scarfs, causing shivers and desi-
re of going back home and sleep a bit more.
It was a normal day, not quite different from
those before and the ones that would come afterwards. When you are a teenager with-
out more problems than homework or exams,
time almost becomes inexistent to you. Days
fuse together while you follow the established routine, again and again.
A shadow ing quickly awoke more than
one from their daydreams. A girl with short
hair running like her life depended on it, dod-
ging everyone with the skill of a feline. Her
life was not monotone, and time had not ma-
naged to chain her to the routine. She disap-
peared as fast as she had appeared almost
like if it all had been a dream.
Ryujin was running with a smile on her face.
Her backpack felt light on her back and her
shoes barely touched the ground. The only
thing that worried her was the folder she car-
ried in her arms and what it contained.
She soon arrived at school and entered
through the door ignoring the puzzled looks
of her peers. She did not stop running at any moment and continued her way disregarding
the words of a teacher asking her to stop.
She went up to the third floor ignoring her exhaustion and did not stop running until she reached art class.
The teacher was writing something on the
board. Ryujin was not surprised to find her
there so early since she was known to be one
of the first to arrive at school and one of the
last ones to leave.
“Ah, Ryujin” said the teacher. “Here so early?”
“Yes, miss” answered Ryujin with a smile. She dropped her backpack on the floor and gave
the teacher the folder she had been carrying
so carefully. “I’ve come to submit my artwork
for the competition.”
“So early? You know you have all day to sub-
mit it, right? You didn’t need to run.”
“I know” she answered a bit embarrassed. “I
just really wanted you to see my work.”
“Well then, let’s see it.”
The teacher opened the folder carefully and
pulled the painting out. As always, her best
student had not let her down. The canvas
was full of blue and green strokes that made
up a beautiful lake so realistic she could
hardly believe it was a painting and not a pho-
tograph. The shining water, the details in the leaves... simply magnificent.
“It’s amazing Ryujin” the mentioned smiled.
“But unfortunately, I cannot present your
work to the competition.”
Ryujin’s smile faded as quickly as it had ap-
peared.
“What? Why?”
“I’ve talked to your other teachers and even
though your grades in my class are excellent
you barely the other subjects, especially maths. You will have to make a bigger effort
in those if you want to have privileges such
as competitions and art galleries. I’m sorry.”
Ryujin felt like her world started to shatter a-
round her.
“But...”
“I’m truly sorry but it’s for your own good.”
“No, please!” Ryujin said, almost screaming.
“You don’t understand, who the hell does
good in maths? Give me another chance,
please” she was so desperate that she
kneeled down in front of the teacher, feeling
the tears start to appear in the corners of her
eyes. “Art is all I have, it’s the only thing that
really makes me happy. I swear I will try har-
der on the other classes, but this is a big op-
portunity, I really need to get into the com-
petition.”
“Ryujin, I...” the teacher gave up after seeing
her student begging. She knew she was tel-
ling the truth because she recognized her
younger self in her. “Okay, but on one condi-
tion. You must get a much better grade in
your next maths exam. If you do not, I’ll with-
draw your entry.”
“Thank you! Thank you so much!” said Ryujin, feeling happiness flow through her body. “I
won’t let you down!”
She left the classroom feeling like the luckiest person on the planet and went to meet her
group of friends, quickly explaining what had happened to them.
“I guess you have studied then?” said Lia, one
of her closest friends.
“What do you mean?” answered Ryujin, con-
fused.
“The next maths exam is today. You didn’t for-
get, right?”
All color disappeared from Ryujin’s cheeks. Panicked she began to run through the hall-
ways again, searching a maths book to study
from before it was too late.
