Hello everyone! After a pretty long time, I’m finally back with another drawing! I’ve been pretty uninspired for a while now, and I figured I might try doing something a bit different to get back to drawing. I decided to work with a palette and try a more painterly style. For this experiment, I drew E-tion since his birthday was two days ago! Here is the final result in this new “drippy painting style”

There is quite a bit to unpack here. So, first of all, this is just one of the many versions of this drawing. I did the colored layer separate from everything else, and then fiddled with it A LOT. Like, this drawing took about 3 hours and a half according to ibis paint. But at least 40 minutes of that time were just me messing with the colors to decide which effect suited the painting the best, and after a lot of comparing and asking around (thank you Squirrel for your input!!!) I ultimately decided on this one. I think the colors just look very good while still maintaining that cool “dripping” effect. I especially like how it works on the hair. Just for comparison, here are all the other versions I considered. Some were quickly discarded but it’s still interesting to see.

All discarded versions

As for the actual “base” of the painting, I simply painted the photo, but a bit differently from my usual style. As you can see from the texture, after I did my normal initial sketch, I later used a more “watercolory” brush and just winged it, trying not to pay too much attention to details, which drastically decreased the time I spent on this piece. The hair especially only took about an hour when I would usually spend a few hours on it in my old realistic portraits. The only details I spent a bit more time on were the lips and eye. For the rest, I kinda just brushed and blended different layers on top of each other.

No color

One last thing I want to mention is how the black and white reference photo really helped achieve this final result. With a colored reference, the colors would have mixed in a weird way and the palette wouldn’t have been of any use. I actually chose this photo kinda randomly, but if I even want to try a painting in a similar style, I’ll definitely make the photo black and white before proceeding, it just works so well!

That’s all for my blog! I had a lot of fun trying this new style and it totally helped with art block! What’s your favorite version amongst the discarded ones? I’m pretty curious lmaooo! Thank you for reading and have a nice day/night!
