coffee break :: by jisoo
With these two bands being my ults and me leading both teams, it was only a matter of time until we'd collab. And I'm so excited to see this collaboration finally posted as I find the idea pretty fun and creative this time around! As you may have figured out by now, we're creating new units from of both bands. I've seen these units range from duos to 4-member bands, with each having a unique vision. I genuinely recommend reading through everyone's sections cause there are some really great unit ideas <3
As for my own, I decided to have a classic 4-man band consisting of Young K (bassist, vocalist, frontman), Wonpil (pianist), Yechan (violinist) and Gwangil (drummer). Now you may notice that this band completely lacks a rhythm and a lead guitar. There's a specific reason for this. You see, my vision with this unit isn't a classic rock or pop music band, instead I've opted for a jazz route! The idea of having a jazz oriented unit came from this video of Yoo Kihyun and the musicians of Night Room (I recommend checking out this radio show, Lucy appeared on it as well and all of them played together, it was awesome!) covering a jazz classic called All Of Me. This cover really stuck with me and I wondered what it would be like to have a band centered around this type of sound. And so, the idea of Coffee Break, the jazz band, was born!
So, I'm sure there are a lot of questions: why the name, what type of music would they make, how does a violin fit into this, etc. Let's start off with the name as this is the easiest part to explain. I feel that jazz is often associated with cafés and much like how coffee is aromatic and has a mature vibe to it, I feel that jazz is rather refined and classy, hence it would be the perfect type of music to listen to on a coffee break. Also I couldn't resist the idea of the band's introduction being "Feeling tired? You need a coffee break. Hello, we are Coffee Break!" How cute would that be? :') As for the band's sound and its , I started off with Wonpil and Yechan as it was evident a pianist (I opted for Wonpil to mostly play a piano instead of a keyboard cause a piano sounds objectively better and is more suited for jazz) was needed for a jazz unit and a violin would pair really well with the instrument. They could switch solos and possibly even play improvisational parts together, vibing off of each other's musicality. Then for a drummer I went with Gwangil as Lucy has covered many genres in the past and I feel he would get accustomed to jazz quickly. He'd suit the member lineup as well cause they're all shy oddballs haha, he'd likely be the most outspoken. Now I had a bit of a debate of who I'd want as the vocalist of the band, but I eventually settled on Young K. Setting aside my bias as he has one of my favourite voices on the Korean music scene, Young K has already dabbled in some jazz with his covers, like this one of Frank Sinatra's hit song Fly Me To The Moon, and he has great musicality, meaning scatting and improvising would likely come to him naturally. Of course, he'd also be playing his bass guitar as a substitute to the contrabass, which is ittedly a strange choice - bassists typically aren't the lead vocalists in bands. However, Young K has never struggled fulfilling his role as a vocalist in DAY6 while playing the bass, so I don’t doubt his ability to take on lead vocals in Coffee Break.
With these choices explained, I believe it’s time to delve into the band's music! With Coffee Break being a jazz band, I could see them covering jazz classics like the aforementioned Fly Me To The Moon, My Funny Valentine, Art Blakey's Moanin' would also be really neat as it's a full on instrumental piece, where Yechan could take on solos and really go all out. Coffee Break would likely tackle other genres like bossa nova as well so songs like The Girl From Ipanema would be in their repertoire. I think another awesome cover from them would be Baekhyun's UN Village as r&b is closely related to jazz. Most of the band's repertoire though would be their own original music, mostly consisting of songs with a couple intrumental pieces here and there. Coffee Break would also have an interesting concept with their albums as each would be named after a different coffee, like caramel macchiato, chocolate moccha, etc. Depending on the name, the songs would also be rather sweet and romantic or bitter and heartbreaking.
Phew okay, this section is already long enough as is so I'll leave it off here. What do you all think though, would you give Coffee Break a listen? Also if you have any Korean jazz band recommendations, do throw them my way!

open air :: by nan
in choosing for this unit, i wanted to select artists with a range in typical instruments that would create a balanced sound while also considering a common trait among each member. for each of the lucy and day6 i chose, one of the first words that come to mind when i think of them is "soft" since they all have a really sweater-y warm image in my mind.
that being said, the i chose to make up this unit include sungjin (main vocal + guitar), sangyeop (guitar + vocal/ sub-rapper), wonsang (bass + backing vocals), dowoon (drums + backing vocals/ sub-rapper). i also think that sungjin would particularly suit the role of leading the band as the frontman given his experience leading day6. plus, sungjin would probably pull of the main concept for this band the best!
now to delve into the concept! i wanted to take these soft from their respective groups and shove them into a really hardcore edgy concept that we're not used to seeing them doing. i think it would be cool to see this new side of them expressed through music and performances, and i think they could create some cool darker rock/ punk songs in their own color. the song eden by iz and the music video for it are a perfect example of what i'd picture for this band. leather jackets? check! dark eye makeup? check! an intense and hard-hitting sound from the very start of the song? check! in this unit, i really want the to go wild and put forth a crazy new and powerful image of themselves!
as for the name of the subunit, my idea for the name open air rooted from the phrase "to blow the roof off this place," which means to generate such immense power that the roof could figuratively be blown away. with the unit open air's sonorous and powerful music style it would be hard for their energy to be contained within the confines of a building or venue. so any venue they perform in would become "open-air" due to the power and volume of their performances.
honestly, each member could really bring something to the table with the edgy dark-rock concept i'm looking for. one of the first things that stood out to me about sungjin was his rough vocal tone which would apply well to the grittier, darker sounds this unit would be centered around. an example of one of the types of songs this band would release is the king must die by purple rain. sungjin's vocal style would match well with bohoon's vocals used in this song. additionally, he and sangyeop both have powerful voices that sound very strong live, and i think they could pull off some hard-hitting harmonies during impactful moments in their songs. it would also be cool for the vocalists of open air to approach some of their songs with vocal styles similar to those presented in o@sis by 2z. there's a lot of variation in the pronunciation of vowels and phrasing of certain lines in this song that give it an edgier feeling. creating a dynamic vocal sound like this in open air's music would really help this band to stand out as well!
i would also love to hear some of the dabble in some rapping since short rap sections can create some cool changes to the shape and structure of their music. dowoon in particular has a rather deep voice which could be used creatively to add more impact during their songs. with his voice they could include some vocal sections similar to the intro of awesome by n.flying. i just adore the idea of having some of these vocalists do some rapping on some of their tracks, and since they each have very unique vocal styles they could each pull off really unique styles of rap. happy death day by xdinary heroes is an example of another song that encomes numerous out-of-the-box vocal styles that give their song an edgier sound.
also, i am in love with wonsang's skilled bass playing, and i think that with the low and intense sound basses can bring wonsang could create some legendary bass solos. this would definitely be a subunit whose live performances just hit different from their studio recordnings!
overall, i think that each member would get along well and have something unique to contribute in creating a new and impactful subunit!

akoustix :: by jisoo
Hello there, it is me again! Yes, I decided to be a bit of an overachiever and create another unit cause I came up with one more unit idea! As you can tell from the header, this unit consists of Sungjin (frontman, vocalist, guitarist), Sangyeop (vocalist, guitarist) and Yechan (violinist). So, my last unit had no guitars and this one has two. You may be thinking, "Jisoo, have you lost your mind? Why do you have 2 guitarists now??" Easy answer, I wanted an acoustic stringed instruments unit. And you know what that means? Both Sungjin and Sangyeop are gonna be playing acoustic guitars! Yesss, I love acoustic guitars :pray: This unit idea was inspired from season 2 of Superband, where poco a poco, an all guitarists band, was formed. I thought it would be interesting to have a similar unit, except with all instruments being acoustic. And so, in my vision, Sungjin, Sangyeop and Yechan have come together to form the band Akoustix.
Akoustix would be a band centered around pop music, made all on acoustic instruments. This video poco a poco and this cover of Coldplay's Adventure Of A Lifetime (Wonsang was a genius for putting together this team) as close as I can get to actually describing their sound. With the addition of a violin, I believe this trio could put together a lot of very unique sounding music as they have to cover both the percussion and the usual electric guitar solos with their own instruments. With Yechan's background in classical music, I could see Akoustix put out classical compositions akin to this classical version of Lucy's Flowering, but I could also see the band take on country like Lucy has done in this cover. I wasn't kidding when I said Lucy has covered many genres already haha ㅋㅋ Basically, since Akoustix is already very limited when it comes to their instruments, they'd have to come up with creative solutions and different compositions from what we're used to hearing, hence I think the band could be very innovative! Their main forte would still be pop music though, I see this suiting them the best.
I saw Steph in her section about Sung-A-Sang, her made-up unit, talk about why Sungjin and Sangyeop work well together as vocalist and I totally agree, those two have very distinct vocal tones that would compliment each other super well! Hence why I've chosen them as the vocalists, meanwhile Yechan would embellish their vocals with instrumental fills and of course play solos. Listen, I'm not a Yechan bias, a violin is just very versatile as an instrument so he ended up in both of these units. Poor guy would have to participate in two bands' activities in my imagination ㅎㅎ I'm kind of u sure about how the interactiona between these 3 would look alike though. They'd definitely be creative musically, but what kind of chemistry they'd have outside of that? I genuinely have no idea- Concept wise though, I think they'd be tightly related to nature with the music videos for Acoustix being shot on grassfields, in forests and besides rivers and lakes. They might even keep inside some of the audio from those environments, something akin to Lucy's use of ambience. Also I feel like their albums would have really beautiful covers??? I'm picturing paintings of nature with very aesthetic typography, possibly pastel colours as well. Seriously, how cool would that be!
And that more or less concludes this section about my imaginary band Akoustix. As a big fan of acoustic instruments, with myself playing in different all acoustic bands as well, I would 100% love to see a group like this in the Kband scene :pray:

I didn't mentioned this on my other comment so I will here.. these covers are sooo gorgeous, I loveeeeee the colors soo damn much and the headers match so well as well 🥰 in loveee.
Another jazz oriented unit?! HECK YES! The idea and concept of coffee break sounds exquisite I would love to see it happen if not from these 4 amazing artist from someone else cuz omgg I would love more of jazz into the whole Korean-music scene. Nan's unit would really be something I would so look forward to, especially taking into consideration the time of songs they will bring into the table, hard-hitting rock issa YES -- like literally all the songs talked about are some of my all time faves so it would totally be a blessing if Nan's unit were to exist. Not to mention, the explanation as to how each of the ' skills would fit into the whole ordeal was a 100% well-established, I'll stan!! Lastly, Akoustix sounds like soo much fun, the pop-rock as well as the combination of some classical elements?! Incredible.. I'm very much a Yechan bias so seeing him in both of your "units" just made me soo happy sksk.
Anyways as a whole this was an incredible, well-thought-out blog! I'm soo proud of the LUCY Team and I was more than happy to be able to participate in such an amazing collab! 🤩 I also want to quickly apologize for my long ass comment sksks
It's been decided :heart_eyes: Lucy and Day6 should come together and Jazz jam us some Frank Sinatra.
This was such a great idea and it didn't disappoint with the way it turned out. Everyone created unique and interesting units i loved reading both teams' sections a lot. And i'm also so happy i got to be part of it :heart_eyes: now Gwangil on my mind all day long🖤
You took such an interesting direction with Open Air Nan, I couldn't have expected a more darker sound from one of these collaborative units! But I can definitely see your vision, it would be epic to see these pull of a darker and more grittier concept especially sound wise. And having the rap omg, I would give so much to see Sangyeop and Dowoon rap back-to-back :eyes: The meaning behind Open Air is super well thought out, love the idea :pray:
All-in-all, I'm so glad this collab is finally up and I've loved reading everyone's sections! Thank you guys so much for making this happen, I've loved every part of our collab so much :yellow_heart:
:sparkles: honored! :sparkles: I'm glad you like it! 🤧
