hello ka!

my head is so full of lucy recently and i have so much to say about them and their music, so i thought starting this new blog series would be a good outlet for that!

my goal is to make this series at least somewhat (maybe not-so) daily (been so busy recently x_x) and spotlight a different lucy song each day!

i'll be choosing each song by shuffling my lucy island playlist on spotify, and hopefully i'll be able to keep this going until i run out of songs!

now to begin with our first lucy song of the day . . .

watermelon

album: panorama

if you're looking for a song of the summer, watermelon is that song!!

watermelon is a b-side on lucy's panorama album, which was released august 13th 2020. if you don't already know, lucy's first music releases after their official debut had a four seasons theme and panorama was their summer album!

of all the tracks on panorama, watermelon is easily one of the most summery! the lyrics of the chorus express wanting to visit the ocean to have fun, stay cool, and breathe fresh air, with an emphasis on letting go of your worries of today.

the music also pairs wonderfully with the free and tropical lyrical theme! watermelon is a perfect example of lucy's signature ambient pop sound! ambient pop here just means that they incorporate real world sounds related to the subjects of their songs to help immerse the listener even more.

a musical highlight featuring their ambient pop sound happens in the post-chorus section of the song at around 1:15 (one minute fifteen seconds) when the music takes on a more muffled quality that sounds as if you've been submerged in water. then at around 1:35 (one minute thirty-five seconds) we come back out of the water for the lyrics to come back in at the second verse. during this part you can hear splashing water and the sound of seagulls as we are brought back into the ocean air. this part is so so immersive and makes the song sound so fresh! you are literally transported to the beach!

another favorite part of this song for me is wonsang's melodic rap in the second verse! before this album's release, wonsang didn't really have solo lines; typically when we'd hear him sing it would be very light backing vocals or echoing lines in a high falsetto. so when this song was released walwals were losing their mind! i think that this short rap section is really fresh and bubbly, which suits wonsang's voice and personality really well!

since the weather is getting really hot hot hot in a lot of places, i hope you all can listen to this song and feel a little lighter! :yellow_heart:
