To celebrate SHINee's Debut birthday, we
decided to write a blog that answered the
question, "What if Replay was released today?"
Each member will talk about one category
and explain what they would change or
leave the same in the category chosen.
Last but not least, Happy SHINee's Day,
it's been 14 years since they debuted and I
could not be more proud to be a Shawol! :gem:

Happy (belated) SHINee day!! Despite these guys existing for over a decade, I’ve been a Shawol for only 2 years, and I really regret not checking them and kpop in general out earlier!
If their legendary “Replay” were to come out today, first of all, it would need lots of pre-release and post-release promotions.
I think that nowadays, the primary way kpop companies inform fans about a comeback or debut is through Instagram. It definitely is the platform used mostly by younger people (compared to Facebook at least) and since every post has to be accompanied by an image, it would be a lot more impactful than a Twitter post for example. But because Instagram was created in 2010, SHINee couldn’t in any way benefit from it during debut, therefore I thought of briefly explaining what a promotional campaign for their mini album on Instagram would look like!
So first of all, there must be a teaser about a new group being formed, right? I feel like SM would post a mysterious image with SHINee’s silhouettes and maybe a first look at their logo? I would say they’d use the circle with the 5 sparkles inside it, since it is pretty cryptic and doesn’t give information about the new group’s name, but can pique people’s interest and leave them wondering how the group might be called.
It would also make sense for SM to make a separate Instagram for the group when they finally reveal the group name!
After the teaser, it’s time to reveal the ! I feel like they’d start from the oldest and make their way to the maknae, so Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and finally Taemin. The member reveal posts would have a photo of the member and his stage name and in the description of the post, there would be various information about the member, like real name and surname, date of birth and position(s) in the group.
After the member reveals, there would probably be a few teaser more teaser pics of them individually and also a few group pics. Speaking more about the teasers for the actual mini album, I feel like it would make sense to have the usual promotions most groups have nowadays: a couple of MV teasers, a song teaser and maybe even a highlight medley, to make people curious about the bsides too.
I feel like a V Live shortly before the album is released would be cool too! SHINee do this every comeback now, and since V Live was only created in 2015, if they debuted today they could already start to gain a following on V Live right from their debut.
As for post-release promotions, there would definitely be lots of posts on both SM’s Instagram and SHINee’s Instagram. Also, something that is pretty important for promotions nowadays is… a TikTok and a dance challenge. As much as I hate to it it, basically every group gotta have one of these for a new release! So SHINee would get a brand new TikTok and take a part of the “Replay” choreography and dance it in a short TikTok for people to follow!
Of course, then, there would be a time period in which they go on various shows to perform live, but since there’s a section about this written by Kai, I won’t go into detail but only mention it. Finally, they would definitely be invited to a few variety shows, like the classic Weekly Idol or After School Club!

First I'll talk about the mv, the music and the melody are so good. The meaning of the song is really beautiful. Everything in the mv is perfect, the lyrics are also amazing, their voices fit the song perfectly. And "Replay" as an debut song is unbelievable I love this song and it's one of my favs. The stage won't be like before, in the background of the stage was a big star that was divided into two parts. It looks good with the star, but I would have changed it to a blue background with a big "REPLAY" written on it 'cause when I say replay, all I can think of is blue. I would change the story of the mv too, then the story will be like this, a guy falling in love with a girl older than him then one day they break up and he finds a "Replay" button and he will click on it (that will happen I mean clicking the button after the line "replay replay replay") and it will get rewinded to where he first met her and he will decide then try to be super kinder to her but she will get bored with him and then they will break up and he will click that "replay" button once the line "replay replay replay" starts..and after that it will get rewinded again and he will decide to show her what is true love through his actions and she will finally accept him..and again when the "replay replay replay" line hits..they will show that he doesn't need the replay button anymore..and after that they will show him having a good relationship with her.

I mean we all know Replay is actually the perfect debut song. It's memorable, it's sweet, it's easy to listen to and you just can't help but smile every time you hear it! It has such a timeless factor (not mention nostalgic) to it as well, I really think that even after 20 years I would still very much "replay" the ish out of it! There isn't anything I would want to change about it because there are just so many memories attached to it and was made too well to ignore. But have you ever sat down and think about what it would be like if Replay would have been released today? I really loved the purposed of this blog because it really made sat down and think about what would be different about it and think out of the box. Perhaps it wouldn't be so good, perhaps it would be even greater? Who knows... In of the song in itself, I think for it to be considered of the time there would most definitely be some changes and I have come to some conclusions...
I have noticed that many releases nowadays rely a lot on experimentation, which is mainly characterized by many switch-ups in sounds. Replay isn't really the type of song that I would consider "complex" when it comes to it sounds and I really think the production of this song can use a few twitches for it to go by the standards of today's releases. Perhaps we could use the help of SM's golden producer (master of the true experimentation), our dear Kenzie for this. What would Kenzie do? I am thinking she would somehow add some interesting sounds in the actual overaching intrumentation, some things that you could not quite explain with words and you would be confuse at the beginning but you would end up liking it later? I am also thinking she would change some things about the chorus, like maybe there would be an addition of a post chorus and it would have some hardcore, pretty cool bass sounds. The bridge is where she would totally go off, maybe we'll get a good ol' extravagant dance break of some sort?
Idk why but I am thinking this new version of Replay would have a similar structure to Beatbox by NCT Dream which is also a brighter sounding song with little craziness going on but is still manages to bring something different to the table.
I think by today's standards, Replay should also get an addition of a longer rap section, doesn't have to be some crazy stuff but getting an extension of what has already been established would be a good idea and I am sure Minho could delivered it well,, if not just Minho maybe him and Key could do a nice back to back rap-singing style. On the other hand, the lyrics and overall concept of the song would remain the same.
Still, as a whole, Replay is an amazing song as is and doesn't need changes. It is part of history and what truly makes SHINee's growth as artists so wonderful and whole.

For this blog I'll be talking about the styling/outfits used in te MV. Please, note that I'm not a fashion expert, sooo bear with me and my opinion  🏻
First, considering that SHINee debuted in 2008, the outfits weren't bad, all the outfits used matched among the and fitted each member's scene. Now, if "Replay" was released today, I would choose those outfits  to choose the "perfect" outfits we need to think about all the different aspects and details regarding the song's style and the MV, so the outfits would be one of the last things to decide.
As I mentioned, we need to know every aspect about the production, and since other team are going to talk about them, my choices will be based on a hypothesis conceived by me, I'll choose the outfits as if the song's style is the same and the basis story of the mv doesn't change and only was applied a modernization of the concept.
In the original mv they used three different outfits, the main one (red) used in almost all mv, the one used in the storyline of the mv and the final one (blueish) used after the bridge of the song. I would maintain the amount of outfits since I think it's a wise choice.
For the first outfit I would choose something casual for the spring season in soft tones, like white, baby blue, brown (that light brown, here some color codes as reference #BC9E82, something in that shades), mint green, you get my point. For the individual outfits used in the storyline, I would choose something that represented each member style, something that would express the personality and likes of each member, as soon as we looked at them we would "know" what kind of person each one of them were.
For the last outfits I would choose something more extravagant, what I mean with this is some suits (I'm not being cliché, okay!?), but not ordinary suits. Each member would have a different kind of suit (both on style and colors), in this one I can easily assign them specific clothes. For Key I would choose a blue suit (just pants and jacket, no shirt, of course the jacket is buttoned, I'm a decent person  ) with some thin silver stripes, #9F1D35/around this color), I would also add a white shirt and the jacket would be open, for shoes I also would choose the same type of shoes. For Taemin it would be a green suit (hear me out!) in this shade, since I'm trying to create a spring vibe, I would layer that with a light/thin white turtleneck shirt), my brain when I think about the shoes goes always to the classic ones so in the next just assume that I chose those kind of shoes, last but not least I would add a necklace similar to this one, or like this one. For Onew I would choose a grey checked suit exactly like this, as soon as I think what Onew would use this suit popped into my head  , exactly like this, with the matching pants and vest and the black tie. Also, I would add an accessory in the superior pocket of the jacket, some kind of golden chain. Last, for Minho (as our designated boyfriend) I would choose a classic black suit in which the jacket has a tail, something like this, I would change the color of the bow tie, instead of white it would be black.
Regarding the makeup and hair, I would follow a concept of pastel colors matching the color of their outfits with a "looking like" natural hair (for the first outfits). In the other two outfits I would go with some simple makeup, maybe some darkish brown or nude colors; the hair would change between these two outfits, for the individual ones the hair needed to match the outfits chosen and for the last ones the hair needed to be more formal, styling it with some gel and hair spray.
I think that I never wrote this much, but I'm happy with all my choices! 🥰

Disclaimer - I am not a dancer and I don’t have an extensive/professional knowledge of dance, so please keep that in mind while reading!
To be honest, this track and choreo are so iconic that I wouldn’t want it to be any different, but to go along with the prompt, here are some things about the “Replay” choreography that I think would be different if it was released today! Dance and choreography have changed a lot over the years, so while I think it would retain its bright and upbeat nature to match the tone and mood of the song, the overall style of dance used would be different. In “Replay,” a lot of the movements are extremely reminiscent of the 90s and 2000s era/style of dance (obviously, considering it came out in 2008), which although it was considered new and experimental of the time, might now be described as “classic” or “old-school.” Rather than being really bouncy like the original, the choreo of “Replay” would probably be a bit sharper and more dramatic, if that makes sense — particularly the arm movements. This would be to match the current trends and patterns seen in choreography these days, especially with how complex and intense many kpop dances have become (not to say the original isn’t complex, because it is, but in a different way).
I think it would also be fun to see them play more with stage and camera angles in the choreography! In the original, although the formation lineup rotates a lot, the dancing is almost always centered and primarily remains in the typical “v”-shape or line with the focus on the person in center. However, many groups now often utilize unique formations and angles throughout the whole song, and I think that could easily be inserted in the “Replay” choreo if it were released as a title today. Especially considering the song itself is already so playful sounding, I think the dance could easily be adjusted to match that by using more creative formations!
Finally, if “Replay” was released today, it might acquire a more obvious “point” dance that can be easily followed. With the popularity of things like TikTok and shorts, people adore dances that stand out but that you can quickly catch on to. Anyways, this song and its actual choreography remains legendary and iconic! It helped shape kpop as we know it today and serves as an important reminder of how everything evolves over time.

Okay, I'm going to say that this is the first time I’ve ever written something like this, so all of this is a long shot. And probably short asf (like me irl).
Both the songs “Replay” and “Love Should Go On” are from the 2008 debut mini album with the same name as the title track, so ‘Replay’. Now that almost twelve years have ed since the release of this record, the way and the scale in which performances are held have changed incredibly. In general, each of the choreographies and styling would have changed drastically over time to something more “catchy” and “appealing”. Here’s how I think these songs would look like a fourteenth anniversary re-do.
On a side note, let’s talk about what ties these two stages together. Of the two stages, more casual listeners would think that ‘Replay’ would be “the more important” of the two because it’s the title and probably the most well known in the general k-pop stan community. However, ‘Love Should Go On’ would be one of those unexpected stages that just hits different with each time it is performed.
Stage one: Replay
What would mostly stay the same between the 2018 version and this potential new version? Probably the basic choreography (read the section on choreography for confirmation); However, the style of choreography will ultimately change over time with any group; my guess is it would be slowed down slightly from the original. One major change I would like to see is instead of Taemin being the center for this stage, I would rather see Key in that same position. Now this might be just based on a personal preference (and that’s okay sometimes!), but I think it would be a good change to mix up the choreo to give the song a slightly different, more matured feel to it.
Stage two: Love Should Go On
Of course, with every comeback or major anniversary of any album/ep, there should be a vocal-based stage. Now, that is not to say that the stage has to be a “ballad”, but in this case... we needed a ballad in here somewhere :joy: .
As I sit and think about what this stage theoretically might look like, I think about how it would look so much better if only the styling was different from the 2018 version. While yes, that version was nice, the color palette was not suiting for them. honestly, I’d love to see periwinkle and white instead of black and silver; it would create more of a dreamy/soft vibe instead of the more classy/sharp vibe. Plus, I just like the softer color scheme for slower or softer songs.
Other than that, there is not much that can be changed, as this is a song that does not require an official choreography. There would also be no reason to create a dance for that style of song.

"Of course the jacket is buttoned, I'm a decent person" 🤣🤣🤣 that actually made me wheezed so hard sksks, soo you are hilarious :skull:
Wow everyone did so great! The creativity was truly off the rails here! I really liked how Kevin proposed to idea of promotions, how it would be like a mystery that little by little would end up being revealed as a whole. That sounds really cool. If Shinee were a new group in this era and they would be promoted like this I would definitely be extremely curious. Lima's idea of the replayed button sounds soo cool, it would actually be such a fun concept, paired up with the switches in the instrumentation that I proposed, perhaps there would be a rewind sound somewhere in that post chorus or dance break? Soo's idea of a spring-style with the suits works so well as well :see_no_evil: the bright sound works extremely well with the pastel colors.. I kinda got reminded of 1of1 with that, which would be kinda a fun call out. "Sharper and more dramatic" movements as Katie proposed would be so perfect with the suits as well? It would be so memorable in that way. I really like how Kai talked about both Replay and Love Should Go On and how the 2018 version of the live stages was incorporated into the whole thing, that was awesome!
As a whole, I really loved everyone's input. This was such a fun read Such an incredible job!!! So proud of the our dear Shinee team!
