After a year of experimental online concerts (which totally ROCK by the way) RQ released their debut single, “Blaze” on 30 December, 2020.

From the moment the group jumps up onto the stage monitors with guitars slung low, they lay down head banging licks for the next four. After an intro of pounding drum and bass and expert string bending, lead singer Ja Young jumps up to add her husky vocals.

I’ve been following Rolling Quartz on their Official YouTube channel since October. I find them eager to keep their fans “Diadem” fed, they team up with RollingStarTV to pump out a live stream stage once a month. If you look back one year ago and compare to today, the group improvement is plain to see.

These shows typically consist of many covers; Rockified versions of BTS Dynamite or Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”. They also do a jump-up-on-the-tables rendition of “Youth Gone Wild” (Skid Row!)

Also, the group has at least two self-produced songs, “Blaze”, and before that “Delight”.

Between songs, the group reads the chat and sy hi to as many fans as they can. All while laughing and poking fun at each other. They speak a mixture of Korean and English with many shout-outs in Japanese, Russian, Spanish...

Drummer Yeong Un (영은)

Yeong Un is sweet and shy — a far cry from the destructive punk she portrays in the video. But encased behind her drumkit she is all business. One time, when asked her favorite sport, Yeong Un crossed her fingers in a big X... “No sport. Drums!”

Not to mention, everybody loves her idol looks.

Basist Areum (아름)

If you’re looking for a Rock and Roll Soul, it’s Areum! In concert, tattooed Areum assumes the wide stance, tosses her long dark hair. Nobody slings a bass lower than Areum as she thumps the strings and gives the camera a stoic stare. In chat, Areum is also quiet, but throws out savage comments when the time is right.

Guitarist Iree (아이리)

On the flip side of that coin is the thoroughly goofey Iree. Even in the most serious song you can spot her big, white grin beneath piles of fire red hair. In one recent chat, she declared “I love cheese!”

Guitarist Hyunjung (훈중)

While Ja Young is frontman, it’s kind of clear that Hyunjung speaks for the band a lot. Her snowcap hair glows in the stage lights as she gives sultry glances down at the camera. Usually Pikachu clings to her guitar neck to spoil her serious image.

Vocal Ja Young (자영)

Kinetic energy is Ja Young’s superpower. Stomping about on overly large boots, casting her big voice to the back of the room. She’s constantly joking and laughing in chat.

I think Ja Young is the member who shows the biggest improvement over the year, always expanding her range and stability.

So, seriously: give RQ a chance.

It hits different. I love my Korean song-and-dance Kpop groups, but it’s also fun sometimes to watch a wild, American/Japanese-style, Hard Rock, 5-some kick some a$$!
