Each week we pose questions to hear your thoughts, ideas and experiences concerning important Leader and Curator decisions.. for this weeks question we are spotlighting Agents and asking…

How Do You Handle a Situation Where Your Leadership Team Disagrees With You?

We’ve all been there … as Agents our job requires the near impossibly perfect combination of delegating authority while also listening to our teams as well as our whilst somehow making the proper decision ..

Personal Experience

This is an interesting topic and I’ve seen it handled many various ways. Sometimes, an extreme one direction and sometimes, the extreme opposite.

In my personal experience, I think sometimes the right thing to do may not be the popular thing to do. I am of the belief that there isn’t necessarily a black or white answer to this situation.

It is my opinion that in some cases, as Agents, we must listen to the minority, when and if the minority grasps the deeper fundamental concept of what is best for the community.

While in other instances, the majority vote of either team leaders, curators and or community should take precedence:

That said, there are also, in my opinion, certain rare and special circumstances, in which the very thing that makes one a great Agent is knowing when to trust their own instincts and be able to make the tough calls when no one else can or even when the majority is in opposition to said decision.

Your Thoughts?

We want to hear from you! As an Agent how do you handle these situations? As a leader and or curator, how would you prefer they be handled? Sound off in the comments below to keep the discussion going!

Depends on the situation. Usually we agree on basically everything but some specific details we don’t agree on necessarily. We tend to try to discuss things again and hear everyone out. Present opinions on what we agree/disagree with and since our team doesn’t get super insane, we can usually talk things out fairly calmly and have either a middle group or decide on one thing over another. If they don’t agree with me specifically, there’s probably something I missed about the situation that they picked up on or the other way around so we just re-explain the situation as we know it and why we think one thing over another and work it out from there.

More often than not, I'll have the mod team vote on something & I usually go with the popular vote, even if I disagree. Although while I'm still the agent, I do have the final say & I tend to be more lenient with people. Sometimes I'll go to an unruly member saying "The C/L wants you banned but I'm willing to give you another chance after a strike" or something like that. My team often elects a harsher penalty than I'd like, but I like to give people another chance.

I would ask for the alternative to my opinion and the ups and downs of both so that I may improve their opinion with mine, state why mine is better or agree when theirs is obviously the superior solution.

I'm new at being a mod member but I always try to find a common ground where we agreed on.

We’ve all been there! Hopefully it worked out in the end … I’ve learned that some of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make as an agent only lead me and prepare me for the next.. thanks so much for the comment!
