Who is Autumn Peltier?

Autumn Peltier, born on 27th September 2004, is Anishinaabe-kwe and is known worldwide for being a water advocate. She began her advocacy at the age of eight years old, inspired by her great aunt Josephine Mandamin. She started advocating for water when she went to the Serpent River Reservation and spotted a warning sign against drinking the water. She learnt that not everyone in her home country of Canada has access to clean water.

Her Advocacy

Peltier gained national and international attention pretty quickly after she presented the Canadian PM Justin Trudeau with a copper water pot and scolded him about the unclean water in Canada that isn’t being addressed and the water protection act. This inspired the Assembly of First Nations to form the “Niabi Odacidae Fund”.

In April 2019, Peltier became known as the chief water commissioner by the Anishinabek Nation, previously held by Peltier’s great aunt Josephine. In September 2019, Peltier was nominated for an International Children’s Peace Prize due to her advocacy.

Just last Saturday, Peltier addressed hundreds of guests at the UN Headquarters, where she pleaded for all to respect the sacredness and importance of clean water.

”I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: we can’t eat money or drink oil.”

In her speech, she drew attention to the fact that there’s a lack of clean water in many Indigenous communities. She says this is what sparked her activism.

”All across these lands, we know somewhere where someone can’t drink the water. Why do many, and why have they gone without for so long?”

In her community, she’s been taught from a very young age about the sacredness of water and how it is so important to make sure everyone has access to safe and clean water.

Peltier also called for the end of plastic usage as another step in restoring the world to it’s original beauty. She urges the General Assembly to “warrior up” take a stand for the planet.

Autumn Peltier is so inspirational and is one of the many influential teenage activists we have. Millions of people around the world have no access to clean water and it’s a huge issue we have to deal with.

But, it’s sad that it’s the teenagers (like Greta Thunberg and Autumn Peltier) that are making action happen rather than the world leaders making the decision to help. We have to pressure them into doing it when it’s their job to make sure everyone has a good standard of living. Even with that, Peltier is still an amazing activist and I appreciate her work so much.

That’s all I have for now, my lovelies. I’ll see you in my next post!

On my reservation the water is white, you can’t even see through it. Yet we all have to drink it on a normal basis. Most communities/reservations I’ve been to, the board of the tribes are constantly complaining because of the dirty water. Especially when on the rez, kids will run up to the side of a house and drink water from the hoses (I did the same) and some of us got sick. But that’s all we had really.
