I would like to recommend a film that recently came to mind after watching the ballet Swan Lake. It is Billy Elliot, a magnificent British film released in 2000, directed by Stephen Daldry. It tells the story of Billy, an 11-year-old boy from a working-class family in northern England, who discovers an unexpected ion for ballet.
Summary
The story takes place in 1984, during the miners' strike in England. Billy, encouraged by his widowed father and older brother, practices boxing, but he does not find joy in it. One day, after training, he accidentally stumbles upon a ballet class and is immediately captivated. Against all odds, he secretly starts attending the lessons of Mrs. Wilkinson, a strict but caring teacher.
When his father and brother discover his interest in ballet, they strongly oppose it, believing it to be inappropriate for a boy and incompatible with their social background. But Billy persists and proves his talent. Mrs. Wilkinson recognizes his exceptional potential and encourages him to audition for the prestigious Royal Ballet School in London.
After many obstacles, his father eventually accepts his dream and does everything he can to help him audition, even swallowing his pride by returning to work in the mines to finance the trip. Billy successfully es his audition and is accepted into the school, marking a turning point in his life.
The film ends several years later: his father and brother, now proud of him, attend his first performance as a professional dancer.
It is an emotional and inspiring film. If you enjoy stories of perseverance and ion, Billy Elliot is a must-watch!
