Coraline is a film which was released in 2009, and is classed as a dark fantasy horror film for children, with its format being stop motion animation.

It revolves around a girl called Coraline, who finds an alternate, idealised world through a secret door in her new home. However, she is unaware of the alternate world's dark secret, which is what the plot revolves around.

The film was a huge hit, grossing US $124.6 million in the box office. It has won many awards and nominations, and has become a favourite for many, as well as being favoured by critics.

Coraline

As mentioned, Coraline is the main character and the namesake of the film, being the 11-year-old girl who discovers the alternate universe. She is played by Dakota Fanning.

Mel Jones

This is Coraline's mother, played by Teri Hatcher.

Other Mother

This is Coraline's alternate world mother, who is also an evil witch/ entity who rules the alternate world. She is also known as The Beldam. She is also played by Teri Hatcher.

Charlie Jones

This is Coraline's father, played by John Hodgman.

Other Father

This is Coraline's alternate world father, created by The Beldam to trick Coraline into staying in the alternate world. He is also played by John Hodgman.

The Cat

This is Coraline's snarky and sarcastic companion, who disappears at will and can speak in the alternate world. He is played by Keith David.

->The film is an adaption from author Neil Gaiman's book of the same name, which was published in 2002.

->There is a DS game, Wii game, PS2 game, and an online web game for Coraline, with a soundtrack for these games being released digitally in 2009.

->The production of the film required a 140,000 sq ft (/13,000m2) warehouse, which was in Hillsboro, Oregon. It used 50 lots and nearly 150 sets.

->Every object was made specifically for the film, being 3D printed and then enhanced by computers.

->There was a crew member hired specially to knit clothing for the film's figures.
