Gaming has become a huge and diverse universe, acting for most as an escape from reality as well as one of the most favoured forms of entertainment.
From physical forms of gaming to the large expansion of the digital gaming world, games have quickly become a relatable outlet for several s.
The genres for gaming is equally if not more so diverse, the gaming world has expanded to fulfill everyone’s interest and the increasing demand we bring with it.
Many factors play a role in this, such as advances in technology, progressions into societal changes and opinions we form around certain topics and even falls down to metaphorical gaming recognition to real life issues.
but what does this have to do with mental health?
developing an understanding of the gaming community is a crucial and fundamental step in being able to analyse and record the psychological implications it has on us, whether positive or negative.
Furthermore, we have to take the diversity of the gaming community into consideration before making an observation, like will different gaming genres have a different affect on our mental health etc.

Here are a list of positive attributes that gaming and the gaming community being to our mental health:
- The gaming community has found an improvement towards our cognitive functions; processes such as reflex, memory, our ability to solve problems and dexterity have all been found to improve over time through an individual and gaming.
- Our mental agility and ability to concentrate also improve when gaming, this is due to the concentration we commit towards a game as well as the natural concentration demands of a game.
- A lot of games encourage and promote social interaction with people across the world, this has been beneficial as we are still able to construct communication skills which are a vital quality to possess in our lives.
- Games improve our attention span; Due to higher levels of concentration we develop the ability to pick up on finer details within a game which in later affects teaches us to combat impulsiveness so when we retain conflicting information and prioritise important information and disregard information that is irrelevant.
- Our ability to recognise needs is hugely enhanced because of gaming, this is achieved through games in which a learns when to advance and when to wait.
- Aside from cognitive functions, gaming has allowed individuals to release and express emotions, which is a healthy step in of mental health, gaming has meant people relate and connect with games which in turns develops their sense of expression as well as their ability to talk about issues, a crucial factor in mental health.
