what is the gender binary?
The gender binary is the classification of two genders, distinctly and exclusively into masculine or feminine.
In society, generally, everything is classified as masculine or feminine — clothes, toiletries, accessories, technology, books — you name it, and there’s probably one thing or another that is classified under that binary.
Another thing often classified under this binary is people. From birth, we are given a label. We are classified as male or female, and from that point on, many different expectations are placed on us based off of that classification.
is there anything that is outside of the binary?
To put it simply, yes! There are many different things that are in fact outside of the binary. A lot of things that are gendered and classified as being in the binary can in fact be classified as not being in the binary — a lot of it depends on the person.
Some people like to mix and match these characteristics that are considered “masculine” and “feminine”, which can be fun and interesting in my opinion. In the next section, we’ll talking more about things that fall outside of the binary.

what does the term “non-binary” mean?
Something that is non-binary simply means that it does not relate to just two things.
Something that is non-binary could relate to both things, more than two things, one of the two and something outside of it, neither at all, or something in between.
In the context of gender, the term “non-binary” is simply an umbrella term that covers all identities that do not fit under the gender binary.
what are some of these and identities?
There are a lot of different identities that fall under the “non-binary” umbrella. In this next section, we will talk about some of those identities and their definitions.
non-binary:
An umbrella term to describe an individual whose identity does not fit under the gender binary of male or female.
bigender:
An individual who identifies with two genders. These two genders can fall within or outside of the binary.
trigender:
An individual that identifies with three genders — these genders can be inside of and outside of the gender binary.
agender:
An individual that does not identify with any particular gender. A lack of gender.
demi-gender:
An individual who partially but not wholly identifies with a gender. (i.e. a demigirl might partially identify as a girl, and partially identify as agender, etc.)

Thank you for this! It’s really nice seeing this information and learning more about myself and others who identify outside the binary :)
Great post
Question for an argument: Are there more than 2 genders?
In my opinion, no. There are tons of gender identidies, but only two genders.
It's like a slider.
Fully one end, male.
Fully to the other, female.
No slider at all? Agender
One side of the slider to the other? Transgender
A little bit to one side, Demi
Can't see the slider? Cofused
Slider's constantly moving? Genderfluid

I guess I can kind of agree to that statement. But microlabels like demigirl and demiboy is according to me not a thing. Like every story I've heard from someone demi sounds more like just expression than gender. Plus genderfluid is pretty much proven to be made up.

I guess my problem with having a slider is that I personally can't see it. I used to do last year, but now I just have these feeling that doesn't add up, but I wouldn't be able to draw up a slider and say "I'm here on the gender spectrum". I just don't feel comfortable being seen as neither a female or a male, I can't really go deeper than that.
I'm rambling but what I'm trying to say is that I would probably rather say that gender expression is a slider, while gender identity is a binary (while nb still exists)

It's a personal thing!
I'm not saying how that is, I'm just saying the way I use to help me see it.
Everyone's different, and that's not an issue! ^^
I'm non binary :3 and as a non binary human I love your blog
Bless you so much for this information!! I’ve been struggling with my identity in recent years and this kinda helps lead me in the right direction :sob: :two_hearts:

There’s no need to rush in finding a label! Just explore and be authentically and unapologetically yourself! You’ve got this. :satisfied:
