Locker rooms and why I’m against them

Hey Guys! This post might be slightly controversial, but I just thought it’d be nice to get these opinions out there. If you don’t like it, don’t read. Anyways, without further ado, let’s move on into the post!

Starting off simple, this can simply make children uncomfortable. Going into middle school I was VERY insecure about my body, and actually had an eating disorder, and having to undress in a locker room full of my peers made me so self-conscious. It also made my ED worse, because while I was in the locker room I got comments on my thighs and stomach. The sad part is I know I’m not the only one this has happened to. If locker rooms weren’t a thing, this wouldn’t have been an issue for me.

The locker room also became an issue for me when I began coming out to people. They automatically started acting differently in front of me. Friends who had previously been totally comfortable undressing right in front of my face started hiding away from me the day after I came out to them. This was extremely damaging to me because it made me feel as though my sexuality was something abnormal that people should fear to be around. Again, this isn’t just me. This affects a ton of the LGBTQ+ community.

This one is so frustrating, and my heart goes out to these kids. Trans kids. Non binary kids. Anybody who’s not cis suffers when it comes to the locker room. It’s just like the bathroom argument; they’re fought over like some object, and eventually they either have to undress in a locker room they don’t want to be in or in the nurses office. This isn’t fair to those children, but it’s sadly their reality. Especially when it comes to using the incorrect genders locker room this can lead to being beaten up or being verbally abused.

Another thing that bothers me about locker rooms is there’s commonly not a choice. In my school and all the others in my area you are not given a choice on whether or not you’ll undress in locker rooms. You can’t use a bathroom, go to the nurse, or even use shower stalls.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l

1. provide other places to change

This would be easy and simple. Allow the kids who are comfortable with it to change in the locker rooms, and allow the others to use bathroom stalls, shower stalls, or the nurses office.

2. Don’t require children to change

I understand that kids on the athletic teams have to wear uniforms for practice, but they can already be wearing it on the way to practice and then change in bathrooms. For PE I find that this is simply unnecessary unless the kids decide they want to. They should offer it, not demand it.

°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l°l||l

3. Let the kids decide

Obviously a cis/straight person using the opposite genders bathroom wouldn’t make much sense at all, but let non-cis people decide! They know their gender identity more than anyone, and it shouldn’t be questioned!

Well, I hope y’all enjoyed! Feel free to comment your opinions (BUT KEEP IT NICE.) well, see you guys later! Bye!
