Welcome to my post! Today I’ll be talking about the false LGBT representation in media and specifically Q**rbaiting. Disclaimer that I’ll be using the word “q**r” uncensored. So let’s begin!

𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠
/kwɪəbeɪtɪnˈɡ/
noun
A marketing technique used to attract a queer (LGBT) audience that involves creating romantic or sexual tension between two same-sex characters but never making it canon / evolving on it, or dropping clear signs a character is queer without ever outing them.

Queer-baiting can be extremely harmful since LGBT representation is not widely portrayed in the media. While some shows are embracing LGBT characters, others choose to remain in the middle just by hinting their presence so as not to dissatisfy their main (heterosexual/cis) audience. Yet they still gain the attention of our community to a certain degree.
║▌│█║▌│ █║▌│█│║▌║
This tactic is clearly manipulative and straight up disrespectful towards LGBT people by falsely giving us the hope that we’re going to have a character to relate to and then never carrying that out. They create enough tension / throw enough hints to be obvious, but not obvious enough so as not to lose their more conservative fans.
║▌║▌│█║▌│ █║▌│█│
LGBT representation is so important, so necessary, it’s a shame someone would try to take advantage of it like that. By having more LGBT characters on TV, we’re normalising our presence in society and the younger generations learn that it’s ok to be different! Heterosexual and cis aren’t the default.
█║▌│█│║▌║▌│█║▌│
We need more shows and movies with LGBT characters playing main roles, living a normal life and just harmonically existing with the rest of the world. We need strong and influential figures, because that’s what we can be, that’s what so many of us already are.
