“You can just sleep on the couch. We don’t have anywhere else for you to stay anyways.”
Vivi had been rather curt with her. She had assumed that it was because of the disturbance that Jiwoo caused.
“Thanks…” She didn’t really know what else to say.
I don’t deserve their care. I’m a murderer. I should’ve stayed with that asshole of a husband. I’m going to ruin their reputation.
Jiwoo thought for a moment and decided to go with her gut. She turned to face Vivi directly before she left to sleep in the comforts of her room. “Is Vivi your real name? I’ve never heard a name like that before.”
Vivi just stood there and shifted her body awkwardly. “I’m… I’m Chinese. My name’s too difficult for a lot of people so I just go by Vivi,” her gaze then turned slightly stern, “How aren’t you able to tell a foreigner from a Korean native? My speech patterns should’ve been more than enough.”
Jiwoo cursed in her head. Her upbringing was really working against her now. “I just… I never really got around when I was younger. I never met a foreigner so I couldn’t tell…”
Sooyoung looked up at Vivi. “Vivi, she’s tired. Let’s go to bed so she can sleep. You’re the one that was so insistent on sleeping anyways.”
Vivi nodded to her and walked through a hallway to her bedroom. Jiwoo was certain that she heard her lock the door.
“Okay, I think it’s time for you to rest. You’ve seemed to have a… rough day?” Sooyoung spoke more in a question than a statement, turning around to head to her room.
Jiwoo mildly frowned. She didn’t want to be alone. She was scared. She had nothing now.
“Wait,” she burst out loud, “can you… stay with me for awhile?”
Sooyoung looked back and smiled.
“It's just that I've had such a bad day and you've been so nice to me—” Her words were cut off by Sooyoung. “It's okay, I can stay for awhile. I don't sleep too well anyways.”
Jiwoo’s face showed relief, her shoulders relaxed with her. “Thank you so very much.”
They both sat on the couch, each sitting at the ends of the couch. Of course, they were strangers, why would they purposefully sit any closer.
“Do you want to watch TV… or something?” Sooyoung asked as a way to ease the moment.
“Oh, yeah. Sure.”
Sooyoung grabbed the remote and the TV turned on in a flash of color, filling the once dark room. The morning news was the first that showed. It had the news anchor and an old woman talking. Jiwoo knew that woman, her mother.
We're here today with Kim Jiseon, the wife of the chairman of Kim Technologies. She's here with us to speak about the recent disappearance of her daughter, Kim Jiwoo, and the apparent suicide of her daughter's husband.
Jiwoo shifted uncomfortably and her shoulders were extremely tense. Sooyoung changed the channel out of boredom. What college student really watches the news anyways?
She flipped through channels that didn't interest her, there wasn't a lot of good shows on at five in the morning. Time was going by fast. Eventually Jiwoo fell asleep, but in her sleep, she moved until she was basically on top of Sooyoung.
Sooyoung layed there, not wanting to wake her up. Of course, she was too awkward to move anyways. Jiwoo’s head rested on her leg. The rest of her was sprawled out, taking up the rest of the couch.
She cursed quietly to herself. Deciding just to stay there, she continued to flip through the TV channels, finding nothing of interest.
-
“What are you doing?!”
Sooyoung and Jiwoo shoot up at the exclamation. Vivi was standing there with a glare aimed at them.
“It's nearly nine! Your class starts at nine fifteen!”
Sooyoung jumped up so fast that Jiwoo nearly fell over. She didn't have time to change out of her clothes from yesterday or anything. She didn't even have time to brush her teeth.
This never happens. Sooyoung has never been late.
She grabbed all the things she needed: her phone, dance shoes, and coat. She ran so fast that people were just blurs behind her.
-
Vivi looked at Jiwoo, with confusion in her eyes. “What happened between you two?” The situation of course was going to raise suspicion.
“What? Nothing happened, we're strangers. Women… shouldn't do things like that anyways.”
Vivi’s face filled with confusion. “Do you even know what year it is? People don't care as much about that anymore. At least the new generation doesn't care as much.” Vivi paused for a moment. “I guess you're some type of exception.” Her voice was laced with sarcasm.
Vivi strode to the door, and then opened it. Instead of leaving, she paused for a moment. “Just so you know,” she said while looking back at Jiwoo, “we won't put up with any homophobia here. So, you better sort that out with yourself, even if it's just internalized. If not, then you can leave.” She left the closing of the door.
Jiwoo was really messing this up, wasn't she?
-
Sooyoung arrived to the dance studio completely out of breath. She was thirty minutes late.
The instructor looked at her, glowering at her. “Do you not take this seriously, Ha Sooyoung? Do you take this class for a joke?”
“What?! No I never have!”
The instructor shook their head. “I can't deal with this right now. Run ten laps around the studio, you're lucky I'm not making it worse.”
Sooyoung sighed and started to run. She was missing out on too much practice now, she was going to be behind. That meant more all nighters.
After she finished, the rest of the class took a break. Sooyoung couldn't bring herself to rest, she messed up and needed to make up for it.
She was going to start working on the choreography, but then Jeongeun stopped her. “Being late doesn't help you be the best dancer, Sooyoung. If you were on time like the rest of us then maybe you wouldn't be second best. At this rate you won't be chosen as the representative for the dance competition.”
Sooyoung shrugged her off, she needed to practice. She didn't have time to bicker today.
She was so exhausted that she felt like ing out.
-
Haseul had the day off today. Well, for the most part she did. She had to go to her internship later, but otherwise she had no classes. This was a blessing for a law major like herself.
She got to sleep late, even through the commotion she heard from her roommates earlier. Now it was time for a late breakfast. Did she have enough money to stop by Starbucks and get food? Does that really matter? Whatever makes her happy.
As she walked in to the living room/kitchen area, she noticed someone on the couch.
Who the hell is that?
“Who are you and why are you in my house?” She spoke in a stern voice.
“I- I um,” Jiwoo took a deep breath, “Sooyoung invited me to… stay here for awhile.”
Haseul suddenly realized what this was. “Wait, so you're one of those guests.”
“What do you mean? I'm only here because she saw I had nowhere else to go.” She spoke
Haseul mentally face palmed. “Oh, I’m sorry I just assumed…” She clapped her hands together. “It doesn't matter!”
With one gaze at Jiwoo, Haseul could just tell that she was starving. She carried herself with a lethargic manner. “Have you ate at all since you got here?”
Jiwoo shook her head, “I haven't ate for a day or so.” Haseul immediately got worried. “Oh my god, honey, you need to come with me to get breakfast.”
Jiwoo started to object but Haseul interrupted her, “Don't worry, I'll pay for you. I think I have enough for it money anyway.”
She nodded at Haseul, “Thank you.” Haseul shrugged in reply. It's no big deal, Haseul likes helping people. That's one of the reasons she was dubbed as, “The Mom Friend”.
-
Class had ended a long time ago for Sooyoung but she stayed and was still dancing. She had to get this choreography perfect. Jeongeun was ahead of her still, she couldn't let that happen.
Being late to class didn't help her reputation either, especially since her teacher decided who got to participate in the competition.
“Fuck!” She cursed with so much frustration. She had messed up again. She rubbed her temples. She was too stressed to dance right now.
Dance used to be a way to relieve stress for her, now it was causing all of her stress.
