Lately, I’ve been checking out the Mercari app.

For those who don’t know Mercari, it a where people can sell new or used items.

Anyway, I was checking out various items and came across this:

It is a audio drama on a vinyl record 45, along with a read-along storybook:

The price was very low, so I decided to “test the waters“ with Mercari and order it.

Just like the people who is sell on eBay, the item cane quickly. I found the item to be very well packed (to prevent damage). It is as described: barely used, but in excellent condition.

As for the item itself, it appears to be a companion to the 1980 television movie which was produced by Rankin/Bass (I actually watching this Special). It was a one time viewing… never to have a rebroadcast or placed into indication. Since you can find more information about this movie special by using Wikipedia, I will not go into the details.

However, I will describe about what I purchased.

The combination audio play and read-along book is part of a series that Walt Disney made back in the late 1970s through the 1980s.

The inside back cover lists all of the book/record sets that Disneyland Records produced. I found it rather interesting that, with only two exceptions, all of these book/record sets where children fables, and Disney animated productions: like "Cinderella", "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves". All of the children’s stories are either in the public domain, or the Walt Disney Company owns the rights.

The two exceptions to the book/record collection series are “The Hobbit“ and “The Return of the King“… stories that Disney did NOT own, nor have the rights.

I surmise that Disney was approached by Rankin/Bass to make these two companion sets. Since Rankin/Bass had a prior history of making children’s animated shows, Disney assumed that this was yet another children’s story.

So, Disney Records, without reviewing the books that these stories were based upon, but probably only reviewed both movies, made the extraordinary decision to make available two record/books.

At the time of this writing, I have not had a chance to listen to the 45-record… mainly because my vinyl player is currently buried behind my Halloween decorations – go figure!

Sometime, in the middle of spring, I will have access to the record player. Then I’ll give a review.

P.S.– I am now on a treasure hunt to find Disney Record’s book/record of “The Hobbit“.
