Wow what an interesting question! A good start to the month if you ask me!
In my personal opinion I love Mario in every media! However, movie Mario is still one of my favorites. I love how goofy he is! And I love how he hates mushrooms. I find that detail so quirky!

He’s the perfectest most kindest most person to ever be born and that’s why he’s my hero
Despite Nintendo trying to keep his character smooth and simple so he can be in every game, I actually think he’s pretty rich as a character, especially in the recent years.
Yes, he’s supposed to be the cheerful, reliable, vanilla hero who will go through any obstacle with a big smile. But also, in the movie, he’s been shown to be impulsive in his decisions, which is played as both a flaw and a quality, and him being actually scared of fighting Bowser in the end. In Luigi’s Mansion, he was helpless and begged Luigi for help, even urging him to do so if he stays a little too long in the area ("Hey Luigi, what’s taking so long?!"). That, and that time in M&L Brothership where he gives a death glare to a certain thing after it threatened the Mushroom Kingdom.
What I like about some fanon is that they explore the more flawed character Mario is, and the pressure put on him as the big great hero. I hope Nintendo will give our favorite plumber more little details in the next years.
