Greetings  🏻 I’m here with a mythological prompt for the Official Mutants Club. Today I am here with a little blog where I briefly discuss why I think the Cait Síth from Celtic and Scottish myth would be a suitable option fir our fuzzy blue elf.

What is a Cait Síth?

Their names roughy translate to cat fairy. These dog sized cats are typically black cats with white markings on their chest. They stand on all fours around humans, but can stand on their hind legs.

Though they are associated with fairies, they are also associated with witches, which may be where the cats have nine lives come from (where the ninth time a witch turns into a cat, they are stuck as one forever).   They are said to steal souls of unburied dead. To prevent this, people would distract them with things like catnip, riddles, and music, and keep bodies in cold areas.

Why Nightcrawler Could Fit as One in a Mythology Sense

The reason I could see Nightcrawler fitting into this is for a few reasons. Though typically called Elf or a variation of it, Kurt has cat like qualities. Namely his flexibility, but things like his eyes, tail, and fangs as well. So him being a cat wouldn’t be too farfetched.

As far as how he would fit as one within his own canon, I’ve narrowed it down to two things: the ability when compared to what his father was planning in Amazing X-Men, and the superstition that would come from it.

When it comes to Azazel, his whole thing was that he was trying to steal souls. Specifically the X-Men’s who appeared to help Kurt. And then Kurt ended up giving up his own to save them and bind Azazel to Earth. I can see something where as a Cait Síth, instead of stealing souls, he may be trying to get his own.

As far as superstitions, there is the whole “black cats are bad luck” thing. Though it’s not exactly tied with this creature from Celtic myth, I do think that could in some way tie to Kurt. Though, the association with witches would fit more in line with Kurt’s associations with demons. Both are seen as bad/evil, as o it would bring trouble for Kurt. His would have more to due with being a demon. So if he were a Cait Síth, that could/would be the main tweak.

What do you think? Do you think this is a good pick for Kurt? Is there another mythological creature that fits better?
