As promised the other day in my post on the embargo dropping for Captain Marvel (available Here) I am today going to do my official review for Captain Marvel that I was lucky enough to see on opening day!

Let's get on with the review. It will be split into three sections; the plot, the acting, action and the tone. This is a NON-SPOILER review of the film. I shall post my spoiler review after seeing it again in the next few weeks.

The Plot

════ ⋆★⋆ ════

The plot, at first, seemed very simplistic. I thought it could end up being a bit like The Winter Soldier in the infiltration sense. But, without going into much detail, I can happily say that this was not the case.

Although a bit bumpy in some places, more so towards the beginning, it was very well written and carried out, and I was pleasantly surprised by some of the twists that the film took, though I did see a few of them coming. Even the ones I did, they were carried out well.

The ending was also really well pulled off and I loved how they set up a few of the things we've come to love in the MCU because of it.

The Acting

════ ⋆★⋆ ════

As in my previous reviews, I'm going to talk about the acting in general and then focus on a few actors in particular. These actors I want to focus on are Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Sam L Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendehlson as Talos and Jude Law as Yon-Rogg. In general, the acting was spectacular. I can't say I was surprised by this, as it's a Marvel film and the castings are brilliant so of course the acting was superb.

First up, it's Brie Larson. All I can say is wow. Wow, wow, wow. She owned the role. Yes, in places, some of the writing wasn't as good as in other places, but she still did extremely well and in my opinion was a charming, charismatic, funny lead who really felt believable throughout, despite the Sci-Fi setting.

Next, Sam L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury. But, what I loved this time is how different he was back in the 90s compared to him as Director of SHIELD with the world on his shoulders. The more carefree element of the character that he portrays is awesome and his chemistry with Brie was great too. I also loved his relationship with Goose the cat, although one or two parts went a little too far and distracted us from the story just a second too long.

I went into the film with really high expectations of Ben Mendehlson as the antagonist of the film, given how much I loved him in Rogue One. And he lived up to almost all of them. I think he was slightly better in Rogue One, but that takes nothing from his performance. It was superb and yet again Marvel has proved themselves capable of brilliant antagonists, as Mendehlson was. It was believable, witty and even emotional at times.

Finally, Jude Law as Yon-Rogg. He played his part brilliantly and was awesomely acted, though I expect nothing less for an actor of his quality. He played the mentor role really well and even if he didn't show his emotions clearly, you can see them in his mannerisms.

Action

════ ⋆★⋆ ════

As with most other MCU films, the action in this film was stunning, along with the CGI that accompanied it. Some of the best sequences were not just firing beams at peeps and then they die, but the close quarter stuff. Though, some of the larger action sequences that did have a lot of CGI were great. There was also a chase sequence that had a great action sequence and really immersed me in the situation.

Tone and emotions

════ ⋆★⋆ ════

The tone and emotions of the film surprised me. I'm not completely sure what I was expecting beforehand - maybe a darker take of the effects of war and the history of Carol. But, what I instead found was that it was a witty, banterous film that still had those effects of conflict I mentioned.

It also had some deep, very human emotions intertwined in it and I got the sense that it was about a woman whose life had been completely changed and couldn't what life was like. It really made me think about how much we take for granted in our lives. Carol's interactions with the Rambeaus especially got me, as well as a heart wrenching change to a character that I'll probably go into more detail on in my Spoiler Review.

Conclusion

════ ⋆★⋆ ════

Overall, I thought the film was fun, witty and a really enjoyable ride, as well as having some deeper emotional scenes in there too that really awe struck me. I thought the start was slightly wobbly, but it really comes into its own in the latter parts of the film and I would definitely recommend giving it a watch if you weren't going to already.
