Standing at 5’5 and having a curvy fit build, Sonia owns warm, tanned skin. Freckles litter across her body in faint spots but are most prominent on her cheeks and nose. Nia has charcoal black hair reaching just below her shoulders and still growing, quite unevenly due to some choppy cutting in the past. Despite being well taken care of, her hair is very wild and curls up in all places. Nia has a fair few piercings ; ears set up with silver, she also has her left brow pierced. Her eyes are almond shaped, and dirty brown in colour though they stand out with her naturally white pupils. Finally, Sonia is never seen without her choker. Thin but strong threads that cross over and meet in the middle, held by three beads. Two on either side is long and quite thick, a pretty sage green in colour with whispy white patterns over them and the one in the middle a slightly darker variation of green — and a swirl pattern displayed on the front.

When her powers are in use, there is rarely any change save for her hair and eyes [ and I will eventually make a reference for that ]. Her hair and eyes will transform and match a paper white and glow brightly ; the major difference is that her hair floats and curls almost like fire, ironically enough.

A black bodysuit [ made of poly spandex ] with simple, lines going up the front ; starting from the legs and turning opposite ends at her chest to stop below her arms. Over top consists of a cropped, short sleeve jacket piece. With a silver zip and buttons to hold the cuffs of the sleeve, and a white ‘X’ Motif over the neckline and black accents. The other piece being a sarong / hip scarf tied beneath a silver buckle containing the same ‘X’ motif — with metallic, yellow paint in the triangle spaces. Sonia wears sturdy, short buckled boots with little silver rings at the buckle and strap. Beneath her body suit, Sonia also adorns sheer black sleeves that hook between her middle fingers. Over that, there are also silver ‘X’ cuffs and bracelets above that.

Sonia’s closet consists of few different things as she dabbled a lot in style in the past ; she does particularly favour purple, black and occasionally green though. Tight, long sleeved tops and intricately designed / detailed stitching jeans — especially flared — are her absolute favourites, however. Most of her closet consist of boots and wedges, which were big in the 90’s anyhow. Beyond that, Nia enjoys blinging up with silver jewellery and owns a lot of different bracelets and rings, and occasionally likes to wear necklaces.

Sonia comes off as an aloof, lonely character. When she’s first introduced, she shows to be very quiet ; observing everyone around her and the way they carried themselves. Despite the lack of words, she proves to be a very strong woman who can take a few punches, and pack a few herself.

Sonia’s reservations stem from her fear of being close to people. In one form or another, people always leave and so she’s certain it’s because she’s sort of ‘ bad luck ‘. So naturally, Nia has few people in the team she’s open and relaxed around. Jean Grey happens to be apart of this collect few as when Sonia was first brought to the X-Mansion, Jean counselled and nurtured her and her abilities. They even found some likeness in their shared tragedy of losing their best friends. In a deep depression, she found solace in Jean’s presence. Today, Sonia has a sort of soft spot for the older woman and regards her highly purely for being there when she needed it most.

But as hinted — Nia isn’t all too timid as she makes herself out to be. Around those she knows well, she is witty and playful. Particularly finding some enjoyment in light hearted gossip and competition, she is actually quite loose. Though, she is often always pulled into others drama and while she enjoys the show can feel a bit suffocated and tries to play mediator — that or she shuts down completely and removes herself.

Suffering for years with her mental state and the lack of control in her abilities made Sonia very quick to anger. She can get overwhelmed and rapidly change from calm to stressed within a few minutes and when this happens, her bad mood can drag on for quite a while. This is due to her bad habit of overthinking. While the light hearted moments fit themselves into happy spaces of her mind, stressful and upsetting ones can flood it and overtake her mood for days. This causes ‘ Off-days ‘ for Sonia ; how well she can function as normal relies on how badly she feels. She usually uses art and music to unwind, and because of her artistic abilities, is actually quite creative.

Sonia does art and it is one of her favourite -times. Enough to even pursue a freelance career surrounding it. Over the years, she’s explored many different mediums and enjoys using all sorts ; she does favour using Pencils and pens, and occasionally has week long obsessions with Acrylic paint. Another one of her -times is singing. Her voice, with a thick Australian accent, is melodic and comforting. Her love for music goes beyond certain genres, and really dabbles in a little bit of everything. Nia really adores nature as well and when drawing, likes to sit outside. She especially found it more precious after her X-Gene had activated ; Seeing the life in things be lost so quickly was haunting for Sonia, and in general, life became much more special to her.

Heat ␥ Overly sweet treats ␥ Working under Pressure

Growing up in Northern Queensland, Australia was tough for Sonia. The heat is just very agitating for her, and she doesn’t like dealing with the discomfort of it. It’s not very helpful given that bad heat chokes her up due to her Pyrophobia. Nia enjoys lollies, she really does. When she was a kid and already situated in the Youth Group home she resided in, Sonia would be on the hunt for every cent and dollar on the street to raid the dairy with. But at a certain point, she did get a little sick of them, and to this day enjoys more savoury treats than anything ! Finally, due to how quickly Nia can crumble emotionally, she doesn’t work well under pressure. She will still do as much as she can and smash out a good chunk of work, but it’s definitely not easy.

Humming ␥ Self-rubbing ␥ Scratching

Sonia has two main self-soothing habits that she does. One would be humming ; specifically a song she re her father singing to her. Really, it’s the last bits of him that she re. Nia doesn’t know what the song is — Only the melody and she hums it particularly when she’s stressed. It brings her back down and she’s done it since she was a child. Two would be self-rubbing — this as in, rubbing her hand against the skin of her arm or her leg. This became a habit of hers when she first got her abilities. She couldn’t touch anybody, or anything that was.. well, alive. So, she did this to comfort herself and even now that she IS able to touch others, she doesn’t like going to people to be comforted or held. As well as rubbing, Sonia had scratched herself a lot. Her own form of self arm that was lowkey enough to not be as attention drawing and worrying for others. When she first gained her abilities her only desire was to just get out of her skin. It hurt everyone she loved, and she wanted out. Of course, her mindset isn’t that exactly anymore, but she finds herself still doing it at times out of habit.

Family ␥ Love

Nia’s dreams are very simple. She wants and yearns for family. She longs to have a lover to wake up to and touch, she longs to have children who she can love the same way she wanted to be loved. She wants a family home for them to grow up in — somewhere all their own. Then again, she wants to be that same fourteen year old girl living in the Youth home. She wants to be surrounded by all her ‘siblings’, to be with her best friend again and to be living like before when she didn’t have powers. Even as bad as the situation was, she had her family there. Girls and boys who needed her just as much as she needed them. But, she knows she can’t have one, and the other she has little to no hope of ever achieving.

Pyrophobia ␥ Hurting her loved ones

One of her biggest fears is Pyrophobia ; the fear of fire. It was intense after her best friend died. She would have constant nightmares terrors, causing Jean to have to come in and console her all through the night. She would get very jumpy around flames and for a long time, tried to avoid using her abilities due to how flame like her hair turned out when using them. Now older, Nia doesn’t react as badly with smaller fires and bad heat — really only uncomfortable at best. However, in the face of bad or furious ones she will freeze and freeze immediately abandon her own mind, lost in her own terror. Alongside this, Sonia is horrified of hurting the people she loves and cares about most. She couldn’t touch for so long that sometimes even now she forgets that she’s able to ; and she’s horrified that she’ll hurt everyone even remotely close to her.

Though she is in and out of commission, Sonia is a somewhat active X-Men Member and has been since she was a teenager. Most of her free time otherwise goes to art commissions however ; paintings and such mostly. She actually is hired to paint all sorts with acrylics and has been commissioned for portraits, wedding pictures etc.

Life Energy Absorption ␥ Life Energy Construct

Sonia’s mutant abilities are very similar to that of Anna-Marie, or better known as Rogue. Nia is able to absorb the vital energy of any living participate through skin to skin ; this includes any living organism, such as plants and trees to animals and human beings. While she is not able to absorb their memories or powers itself, she can use their life source to enhance her strength, speed and endurance.

In the same turn, Nia can also use her absorption ability to create physical constructs like walls and stepping stones. From fifteen to seventeen, she was limited to that only and was utilised more defensively. From seventeen onward however, she taught herself to go beyond that ; Struggling a lot at first to be able to form and hold anything other than walls — Sonia was able to conjure up things like hammers and blades or chains, and lassos. Nowadays she is able to do these things without a second thought and is more confident in a more offensive role.

Sonia was very proud of herself when she taught herself to platform the soles of her boots to be able to fly.

Now as mentioned, Sonia had worked hard to get past her curse of an ability. Like Rogue, she wasn’t able to touch anything or anyone skin to skin and she despised herself for it. While she overcame that spontaneously at sixteen, Sonia still refrained from touching for a long while due to the fear she would hurt someone in the team because over-exertion and strong emotions still cause her troubles. She especially puts in great effort to be as collected as she can in a fight, otherwise she can’t really control herself. While very strong, her absorption powers are useless against others with absorption powers or reflective abilities.

Hand to Hand

Sonia had a particular interest in Hand to Hand combat. In the beginning, she wanted to be able to rely on her own physical capabilities rather than her powers due to how unstable they were. Gloved and modestly covered so that there were no chances of skin , she trained under Beast specifically for Hand to hand combat. Sonia also became very talented in acrobatics and gymnastics in turn to his teachings.

Aramoana Emerson-Warren ␥ Mutant ␥ Deceased

Aramoana Emerson-Warren was a mutant born in Whanganui, New Zealand to Naheema and Roppiani Emerson.

Aramoana was a lively woman with a lot of love for life. She desired to have a family and travel the world with the people she loved. She longed to share her heritage and heart with her children and watch them do the same with theirs ; Though life doesn’t work the way we want it to, as cruel as it is. She died young, only shortly after having her daughter. As mentioned, she was mutant and her abilities fell into the category of healing. Similar to how Sonia can take life force from others, Aramoana can transmit her own to heal others and she loved being able to help other people. She used her abilities to heal Mark, her husband, often in their teens. She enjoys being that source for others — But then came Nia. Born prematurely and on the brink of death before her life even started, Aramoana sacrificed herself to give her daughter a chance and truly, she would do it again and again. She managed to at least die knowing that her baby did make it.

Aramoana and Sonia would have had a very close relationship had she been alive today. Moana was so excited to have a child. She made an album with the first half filled with photos of herself and her husband but of course the rest of the album lays empty. She had made a book, specially crafted to help teach Nia Te Reo Māori considering they would move to Australia right after recovering from birth. They would be disconnected so she wanted her daughter to have something to start out, and obviously, she would’ve taught her much more. Sonia doesn’t know anything about her mother, but Aramoana would be proud of her.

Mark Warren . Non-Mutant . Alive

Mark Warren was born in Northern Queensland, Australia to Helena and Johnson Warren.

Mark was a very hard headed and stubborn man who would dive head first into a fight, all action first and questions later. He was a big stress for his parents around high school. He was angry all the time due to being forced to pick up his whole life and move to New Zealand, forced to leave behind everything he knew for his dads work. That’s when he met and fell in love with Aramoana. They attended the same school and lived near each other ; she butted herself into his life after a bad fight he had and he was the first person outside of her family she showed her Mutant abilities to. Since year eight, they had been glued to the hip. He loved her so much. She taught him patience and to live his fullest life, to let go instead of being angry — and they married as soon as they got out of highschool. He became a father at twenty and a single one within nine months.

Mark was lost for a long time. Torn between genuine love for his daughter and then just full blown anger and despair at the loss of his wife. He was thrown into being a dad that he never properly grieved Aramoana, forced to straighten up and get his life together now that she was gone because what was going to happen if he just sat around crying ? However, as hard as he tried for six years to raise Sonia on his own ; he became snappy. He became overworked and stressed. Then, he was facing the idea that at any given moment she could turn up to be a mutant just like Aramoana and he decided he couldn’t do it. Mark abandoned Sonia at Warragowa Youth Home with a bag of clothes, the Language book her mother left her, and a drunken, sobbing apology.

He is still alive today and has not remarried or even dated. He still resides in Australia, and moved quite a bit. When he heard about the fire at the Youth Home, he moved back to Cairns. Some part of him hoped that Sonia would be there still but she wasn’t. To this day, Mark is emotionally all over the place. Uncertain of himself and how he feels about his daughter.

Kitty Pryde . Mutant ␥ Alamoa Faumuina . Human

Olive Santos was one of the other kids that Sonia was housed with in the Youth Home ! Only two years younger than herself, however, they were still close and had a strong friendship with two others from their home. Despite the rumours of Sonia causing the fire that diminished their home, Olive remained certain and on her side. They’d meet again in the future when Olive begins her own Beauty salon in New York and remain very close.

Rogue and Sonia connect really well. They have many things in common such as — of course — their abilities, their dreams and desire for love and affection, and their love for letting loose in a fight. Due to their likeness, Sonia became one of the few people who can actually touch Rogue and come out conscious. Their powers cancel one another out which helps the two get rowdy for combos when fighting together or having a good couple of drinks.

Kitty Pryde was one of the first kids who spoke to Sonia when she arrived at the mansion. Thirteen year old kitty saw a girl older than her and approached, giving Sonia no choice in befriending her however — Basically how someone randomly picks up a stray cat and forces their love on them. Or how an introvert is joked to always be adopted by an extrovert. Initially, Sonia would get very annoyed with her and her sweet, bright eyed personality though. One thing is, Sonia was very weirded out by Kitty and Piotr’s relationship due to the age gap and was very outspoken about this.

Alamoa Faumuina was a girl Sonia went to school with in Australia. They purely befriended one another during a game of rugby at school one day and they’d been friends right until the fire, and Sonia ran away. They were both very witty and could shoot back playfully with one another and matched each other’s competitive spirits. They do eventually meet again when Sonia goes down to touch in with the X-Men’s Australian base of operations and keep in touch from there.

Phoebe Benson ␥ Human

While yes, Sonia has faced many different obstacles and genuinely loathes those like Boliver Trask, and Gyrich, she does have her own personal Enemy ; Phoebe Benson is an engineer working independently, though occasionally collaborating and creating for those like Gyrich. She grew up in the Youth Home and was apart of Sonia’s friend group in the home.

Driven mad by the fire and the events that unfolded that night of, Phoebe has had a few separate encounters with Nia and uses her inventions against her in multiple attempts to kill her. There is also an instance where she attempts to lure those from the Warragowa Youth Home to an exact copy of that building pre-fire of which she had built herself ; Only designed to entrap and kill them all. Despite it being failed, she insists that it has to happen. That they should’ve all died along with the lives they did lose that night. She sees that it was fate and that they escaped it unrightfully.

While Phoebe is no longer the girl Nia grew up with, she finds herself hesitating when it comes down to fighting her. She still sees the fourteen year old girl she used to laugh with late on school nights.

Rhiannon . Black Cat

Rhiannon is Sonia’s first ever pet. She is a pretty, and very fluffy black cat with golden eyes. Named after Fleetwood Mac’s song, Rhiannon was a rescue kitten and is now currently a year old. Nia enjoys singing Rhiannon to her because she finds it funny ; though her feline is none the wiser, only wishing to cuddle up and cling to her owner. Sonia does also enjoy the idea of having a pit-bull as they’re also very beautiful to her and due to their ‘dangerous’ nature, appeals to Sonia personally but she refrains from getting one until she knows she’s ready. For now, it’s her and black, ‘bad luck’ cat against the world.

Sonia Warren is a mutant born to Aramoana Emerson-Warren and Mark Warren. She was born in Whanganui, New Zealand but was raised in Australia shortly after her mother died. Sonia doesn’t recall much before she was abandoned at Warragowa Youth Home, and anything she does slightly is fuzzy. Of course she’s aware of her father and being raised by him alone ; no family involvement, no other women that he’d dated or brought home but beyond that, Nia doesn’t feel connected to some sort of past ties with her biological family. She does however a lot about Warragowa. She’d been living there from six to fourteen. Sonia experienced a lot there ; gained many friends and sibling bonds. With a lot of the kids she’d looked up to ageing out of the system or being fostered and adopted, it was finally her turn to be one of those ‘ older sibling ‘ types. Despite facing many abusive and horrible workers, what kept her heart were the better workers. The kids. She was reminded that even the worst places there was still a little good to take away from this.

Sonia formed a very strong bond with three girls specifically ; Phoebe Benson, Olive Santos and Angela Clarke. Angela and Sonia were especially close. They arrived around the same time, and their birthdays were close. Angela was like the sun, and Sonia the moon. They were best friends. So, it hit especially hard for Nia when the news that Angela was being adopted came about. She was emotional and clingy, because what was a girl to do ?

The night before Angela left was supposed to be fun but it unfurled in the most horrific way. A fire started ; a lit cigarette not being stamped out and catching flames on the curtain of the old Queenslander home. The workers were rushing to get everyone up while the fire began to eat at the house, and given the large amount, they could barely keep track. Sonia and Angela were rounding up the girls in their room, evacuating them. Just when the last girls had managed to scrape by and rush off, Angela had gone back in the room to grab somethings — even despite Sonia’s urgency, she wouldn’t move fast enough. The ceiling could be heard crackling as smoke began to fill the room and with the panic and fear that instilled itself in her chest, she rushed to grab Angela. The moment her hand touched hers, Nia’s hair blew up in what looked to be white flames that furiously whipped above her head. Eyes blew brightly and Angela paled, her grip tightening on hers as Sonia tried to pull her through ; she was on the floor in seconds and that’s when Sonia clocked it.

One of the workers had come back to retrieve her when the ceiling already began to cave and he had to forcibly drag her out.

Sonia ran away that night. None of those kids saw her again, and she never saw them. Aimlessly wandering the streets, she was eventually founded by Charles who had, by then, sensed her development.

From there, she was brought to America — To the X-Mansion.

Sonia took a long while to get fully situated ; she was deeply depressed for months and still even now, has weeks where everything drags her back down. Nia was very up and down with her abilities and a lot of the time, wanted to give up on herself. Her growing relationships with the X-Men would fluctuate dramatically with her mental health and emotions but it only ended in strengthening them.
