Bands I Can't Get Into

Salutations everybody, tonight I'll be doing a somewhat quick blog as it's been a while since I've posted something on here and I want to do something easy for my first blog back. As the title suggests, I'll be talking about bands I just can't get into for one reason or another. Oh, and I'll be sticking to metal bands only because I'm a huge fan of the metal world and I don't want to just make a blog hating on artists such as Nickelback, Imagine Dragons, Blood on the Dance Floor, Panic! At the Disco, and Black Veil Brides since those lists are lazy and have been done to death by now. Silencer

Genre: Depressive Suicidal Black Metal

I've listened to dozens of DSBM bands and I've enjoyed the genre quite a bit since I discovered it a few years back as it's one of the only musical genres that actually feels gloomy and depressive. It's not just some pop star singing about a breakup over a melodramatic piano piece, but with atmosphere and pacing the bands are able to create these darker yet soothing tracks that truly resonate with their target audience. Silencer is the exception. The shrieking vocals are so over the top that it loses any of the shock value, the lyrics are poorly written, and the obviously false backstory is the only reason why people talk about the band. Not one time have I seen or heard someone say "man, I sure do love Thunder Bowels" yet this band is basically the face of the DSBM scene despite every other band I know about blowing Silencer out of the water. They're just a couple of dudes who tried to become the next Mayhem and I guess it worked out well for how niche they are, but they're still one of the worst artists I've ever heard. If you want to check out this subgenre I would recommend bands such as Thy Light, Trist, Happy Days, Xasthur, Exiled From Light, Xathrites, Hypothermia, Nocturnal Depression, Lifelover, hell even Decalius is a better representation of the genre than Silencer could ever be.

Ice Nine Kills

Genre: Melodic Metalcore & Horror Punk

Talk about disappointing. I grew up watching horror movies basically my entire life. I listened to some metal music as a kid and once I got my first phone as a teenager I was able to discover many other metal bands that I would go on to love. I should love Ice Nine Kills since they combined two of my favorite things ever yet every time I listen to this band I just don't feel anything.

These guys come across as the popular guys who are trying to act like the outsiders by embracing the horror genre - but only once it starts to get popular again. They're essentially horror fans first and musicians second and their music just falls flat for me most of the time. If they weren't friends with Damien Leone and the people from the Dead Meat YouTube channel I don't think they would be talked about as much as they are, although I could be wrong. They just seem like nice guys who rely too heavily on the horror genre now that it's popular again and at the end of the day they're a more poppy version of Mortician, a death metal band who's been doing the horror and metal fusion for decades now. I really wanted to like this band, but the band feels to try-hardish for my liking.

Bad Omens

Genre: Alternative Metal

Most of the music I've heard from Bad Omens just seems like very cheap copies of BMTH material from over the years. The music isn't even horrible, they're probably one of the better bands I'm mentioning in this blog, but it just feels like stuff I've already listened to so while I'm not going to say Bad Omens is a bad band per se, I don't see myself ever going back to their discography unless they change their sound up a bit.

Disturbed

Genre: Hard Rock & Alternative Metal

Disturbed was the first metal band I couldn't get into. They've always sounded awkward in my opinion and even when I was pretty young (about seven years old) I felt weird listening to this band because they just weren't convincing. Their biggest claim to fame has been that random cover of 'The Sound of Silence' they did, which would be good if you completely forget the point of the original song. I have listened to most, if not all, of their albums and the songs I liked have been few and far between. I don't understand the hype for these guys.

Machine Head *

Genre: Heavy metal, Nü-Metal, & Groove Metal

I have to put an asterisk next to Machine Head's name because I don't hate the band. I just can't stand Robb Flynn. Robb Flynn is a mediocre at best vocalist and as a person he's super unlikeable to me because he doesn't know what ability is plus he is extremely hypocritical. However, pushing the personal aspects of Robb Flynn to the side, he's not that great of a frontman. He's not charismatic. His vocal work isn't the best. He fails in one style of metal so he tries doing something else just to fall flat again.

He tried doing groove metal, got outshined by several other bands including Pantera, Devildriver, Chimaira, Lamb of God, White Zombie, and several other smaller bands. He tried jumping on the Nü-Metal bandwagon and got outclassed by KoRn, Slipknot, Slaves on Dope, Snot, Reveille, Skindred, Linkin Park, The Kennedy Soundtrack, V-Mob, and several other artists. He tried doing heavy metal and obviously couldn't hold a candle to the likes of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio, Judas Priest, Cloven Hoof, Saxon, Cirith Ungol, and at least a dozen other bands in that field. Machine Head is very talented instrumental wise, but whenever Robb Flynn opens his mouth I hit the skip button; and no, I'm not being too harsh on him because he has gone out of his way to alienate his fans in the past and he has a habit of sticking his foot in his mouth. If he can dish criticism on others, he should be able to receive it as well. Not like he's going to see this blog anyway.

Sleep Token

Genre: Alternative Metal & Progressive Metal

I have never felt so empty listening to "metal" music in my life. This is just straight up filler to me. The instrumentals are so bare and empty most of the time, then the vocals are just laughably weak. As someone who listens to a lot of atmospheric black metal, I'm used to slower paced music and vocals that aren't really traditional metal vocals, but good God this band is just not for me. I'm just going to move on to the next entry now, I didn't say that much about the band because there's not much for me to say. It's just bland.

Limp Bizkit

Genre: Nü-Metal

I'm a pretty big fan of Nü-Metal but Limp Bizkit has never been my thing. I don't hate them as much as others do but I gotta be honest, they're just not a band I go out of my way to listen to. I find Wes Borland to be overrated in my opinion as there are a hundred other guitarists I would rather listen to and Fred Durst doing this douchebag frat boy rapper gimmick has always been cheesy to me; and its kind of frustrating as they do have small glimpses where they're doing something nice such as the tribute to Metallica they did several years ago but then they almost immediately devolve back into these angsty characters and I just can't get into it for that long.

Alex Terrible

Genre: Deathcore

Slaughter to Prevail was an interesting band at the start considering they didn't just sound like every other deathcore band in existence but the longer Alex Terrible goes on the less I appreciate his work. Every other week it seems he's promoting "the heaviest breakdown ever" and then it's just the most basic thing he's done a million times before. He gets on stage and yells without a microphone and for some reason that's supposed to be impressive to me when in actuality he's just going to ruin his voice even more as we've seen happen to multiple other vocalists over the years. He wants to be Phil Anselmo so badly but he just comes across as a goofy gimmick. The band used to be decent for that specific niche, but nowadays I don't care for it.

Six Feet Under (but mostly Chris Barnes)

Genre: Death Metal

Six Feet Under was born after Chris Barnes left and/or got kicked out of Cannibal Corpse, in which he was replaced by George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. I don't necessarily hate Six Feet Under, however when you look at the death metal scene from before and after this new band began you can see they don't stick out as one of the better acts out there. Instrumentally they're okay, not really bad but also not anything I can't find from a hundred other bands. Vocally speaking? Now that's a different story. Outside of maybe two early Cannibal Corpse albums I don't consider Chris Barnes to be that great of a frontman and he's definitely gotten worse since leaving Cannibal Corpse. As a vocalist Chris Barnes is about as formulaic as a death metal talent can be and it's clear as day that his voice has gotten worse over the years. Take all of that and then add the fact that he's constantly hating on newer death metal bands despite being in one of the most universally laughably bad bands in the genre and you get something that I don't want to revisit all that often. Allen West was a pretty solid guitarist though, I gotta give him props for being a shining beacon in a group of nonsense.

Infant Annihilator

Genre: Deathcore

Infant Annihilator is easily one of the most over-hyped bands I've ever listened to. I'm all about pushing boundaries when it comes to metal music so when I heard about a band by the name of "Infant Annihilator" and heard they were somewhat controversial at the time (this was a few years ago by the way) I was intrigued. Then I listened to the music and was severely disappointed. Their guitar work on their first album was pretty forgettable, then when the band finally decided to improve their sound it just sounded like a Rings of Saturn ripoff. Not to mention the obviously over-proccessed drums that are more annoying than heavy, and you have a shitty deathcore band.

I will give props to the vocalist though, if he had a better band that actually played their instruments I'm sure he would be considered one of the better vocalists in the core world, but overall I can't get into these guys.

Gorgoroth

Genre: Black metal

Gorgoroth is a band that I wish I liked. I like the band name. I like the look of the band. They have a very small handful of songs I don't mind. They're considered one of the better black metal bands out there and I can attest that they do bring a more primitive style to the raw black metal scene which is unique for their time. Yet, for one reason or another, their music has never stuck with me. I appreciate bands such as Burzum, Satanic Warmaster, Darkthrone, Mgła, Venom and a few others but for some reason Gorgoroth never struck a major chord with me.

Pornogrind as a whole

I have spent...no, wait. Let me rephrase this. I have stupidly and regretfully wasted hours of my life trying to find a decent band who makes Pornogrind and I haven't even come close to finding a decent band. Unoriginal riffs, nonexistent solos, stupid stage costumes, poorly written lyrics - not like the lyrics matter as the vocalists are always a bunch of imbeciles who can't enunciate their words, there's literally nothing good to say about this genre. I like quite a bit of extreme metal. From thrash to death to black metal and even some grindcore bands as well, I don't mind when someone is trying to push boundaries in music/entertainment as a whole. But once it gets to the point where it just sounds like someone is shitting into a bucket I stop listening.

I've seen some people say Pornogrind is good because the artists don't take themselves too seriously but that's a dumb excuse because glam metal and power metal bands rarely take themselves seriously and there's hundreds of songs from those genres that are better than this nonsense. These people think they're doing something unique when in reality they're just less known versions of Seth Putnam or GG Allin.
