In the dark of the room, a cat jumped up onto the windowsill. He cocked his head to the side, looking up at the moon it was almost full tonight, waxing. It filled him with a powerful feeling. Glancing back, he looked around the house. It was dark and still inside, it felt frozen in silence. He then looked outside. The moon provided all the light he needed, he could see distant trees swaying in the wind and hear the rustle of the branches. Even in the dead of night, nature was lively.
He’d left the window open for himself earlier, and now could slip out of it with ease. The cool, night air, hit his fur in all the right places. He stilled, all but purring as the wind ran through it. Then he hopped into the grass. Smiling. He looked around, sniffed the air. October nights were the crispest. He loved to experience them this way. From this perspective. The sky was clear, the stars bright. The moon was nearly full, Halloween decorations in the distance shifted with the breeze.
He loved the way grass felt under his paws. It was a feeling one couldn’t achieve through shoes on feet. After a few moments of standing still, of feeling the glorious wind through his fur, the cat began to run. He had somewhere to be at. He had to meet up with someone.
There was a hill. Far enough from his home that he wouldn’t get caught but close enough that his arrival was quick. It was a deeply romantic spot for humans. It was even better for those who weren’t.
On the hill was a single tree. And from the tree, a lone bat hung. Watching the moon. It’s ears twitched as the cat came closer, there was no sneaking up on him. The cat began to climb the tree and the bat dropped from his branch, flapping around and landing stop the branch before fluttering around and resting on the cat who had just sat on the branch.
The cat meowed, but the bat didn’t move, and instead wrapped his wings around the cat as if giving him a hug. The cat meowed again, but the bat was nuzzled comfortably into his fur. A noise of false annoyance came from the cat before he jumped down from the tree, forcing the bat to let go and start flapping out of instinct.
As soon as the cat was safely on the ground, he was changed into a humanoid form, sitting still in the grass. An ‘eek’ came from the bat as it lowered itself to the ground, also transforming from a creature to something to be assumed human. This one standing upright. He smiled
“Did you have any trouble getting out?” Rory asked, bending to sit next to the other in the grass, leaning against him and feeling his arm wrap around his shoulder.
“No. Got out fine,” Benny whispered back, watching the moon.
This was the only time that they got to display affection like this. Nobody in their lives knew they were together. Not even their closest friends. While other couples were kissing in the hallways and holding hands on the walk to class, these two had to settle for walking side by side and letting the backs of their hands touch whenever they could and standing slightly closer to each other than they would have before.
Tonight, both of them had snuck out of their homes, which was a little easier for the bat than the cat, just to have a few moments with each other.
“Good. I love you.” The vampire whispered, happily nuzzled into the other’s side. He felt the arm around him squeeze him a little, happiness bubbling through his entire system. Rory, of course, didn’t really need sleep, but the fact that his black cat of a boyfriend was willing to sacrifice his sleep schedule just for them to have this special moment as a couple meant everything to him.
“Love you too, Ro.” The familiar responded, his voice not a whisper.
That sentence? That also meant everything to Rory. It was something that couldn’t be said often. Only in hushed tones when parting ways in the hall or through their eyes when they connected in class. But every time he heard it. Heard it like this? It meant the world and the sun and all of the stars.
Rory leaned backwards, laying in the grass behing him, looking up at the sky. After a couple of moments of silence, he asked. “Are you tired?”
“No.”
“It's late.”
“I took a nap before I came. I'm fine.”
It was hard to find out what to say. Rory wasn't good at silence even if it didn't feel like a bad silence.
It was nice to have quiet, romantic moments like this with Benny, to feel the other’s arm around him and feel love, but also, this couple’s natural habitat was definitely inside with a garlic free pizza and a video game. (Which posed the question: Why do all the work to sneak out when they could have just had a sleepover. They’d had pleny before. Answer? Sneaking out was way more romantic)
Rory stared at the sky. Stars twinkling all around them. He didn't know what to say, and he was starting to get lost in his own mind, thinking about how small the two of them really were.
“We cant hide this forever,” Benny began, and Rory looked over at Benny as he spoke. “From Ethan and. And everybody, I mean. Ethan's already onto us. Onto me, at least. Thinks I'm with someone. He just hasn't realized it's you.”
“Do you wanna tell him?”
“I mean yeah,” Benny began, leaning back as Rory was, “he's my best friend.”
“You were the one that wanted to-”
“I know. Rory. But it's been a couple of weeks now and I think we can be open about it now.”
Rory smiled, sitting up a little to look over at Benny's face. “I'm happy with that! So we can kiss and stuff? At school?”
Benny thought for a moment, not sure how much he wanted to engage in at school. On one hand, couples showing off their pda in the halls was annoying. On the other the time had Erica kissed him had been fucking awesome, and the idea of that being Rory- and an everyday thing. That was also fucking awesome. “Yeah, maybe.” He decided, a smile playing at his lips. “If you want.”
“Uhm. Obviously I want!”
Benny sat up too. And with a giggle from Rory’s end and a kiss to seal the deal, it was decided. Their relationship would be a secret no longer.
