The Ice Princess

Cold. Beautiful. Sparkling. Unwavering, yet so flexible. As the music slowed and then came to a stop, so did the world. The skater at the center of the rink, motionless, had finished her routine on the ice, her legs trembling with the effort to stay upright as she glided towards the side to get water. Her golden eyes floated to the only other person in the whole building, her long time best friend, Tenko Shimura. His pale blue hair shined softly in the dimmed lights of the audience seats as he watched her skate to the edge and then step onto the regular floor, closing the side door behind her.

“I didn’t see you come in.” She gave him a smile, her pointed teeth glinting off the lights.

The cold atmosphere caused a chill to run down Toga’s spine, her body shuddering now that she was no longer in motion and her body cooling down. The bench she perched on was cushioned by her jacket, as she bent over to take her skates off and put on her sneakers instead.

“Well, I wanted to watch your Short Program before the competition.” Her tall friend answered, his blue hair swaying as he stood and walked down the aisle rows to meet her at the bottom.

As the blonde female finished removing her skates and pulled her sneakers on, she pulled her jacket over her shoulders, packing her skates into her gym bag, and then pulling it over her shoulder, only to be interrupted by Tenko’s large hand taking it from her and slinging it over his own shoulder.

“You always use that excuse.” She laughed, letting him take her bag, since she was sore from all of her practice.

Rounding the corner, Toga pulled her Ipod off of the cord, disconnecting it from the speaker system in the ice rink, and stuffed it into her pocket. “Well, I like to watch you skate. You’re pretty popular too, I’ve heard some people calling you ‘The Ice Princess’. Your win streak is nearly perfect too.”

The blonde’s face was already red from the cold and exercise, but it managed to burn brighter as she heard Tenko’s words. It wasn’t like she hadn’t noticed these things herself, but hearing that almost everyone called her that, it made her skin tingle with both excitement and embarrassment.

As the pair walked out of the building they headed for one of their favorite dinner spots, a small restaurant called Pimon. They served delicious ramen, sushi, miso soup, and tempura. It was a small restaurant so nobody bothered them there.

As they sat down at their usual spot, they ordered ramen, per usual, and ate together, talking about the ice skating world. How the scoring would be, the single short programs, and free skates. Tenko was convinced that Toga would make it in the top three, and Toga was crazy enough to believe it. In fact, Toga was crazy in general, but she built it up and spent it on the ice.

The sun was setting by the time the two were heading back to Toga’s house, Tenko escorting her there. As they made it to the threshold of her home, she took her bag from Tenko’s arms.

“Do you want to come in for tea? It’s the least I can do.” She held the gate open for him as they walked in, her parents were never home, so she had the house to herself ninety percent of the time.

“Sure, I would love some tea.” He said sheepishly, scratching his neck. It was a strange habit of his whenever he was nervous.

Wandering into the kitchen, Tenko took a seat at the counter, watching as Toga made green tea on the stove. As the tea was brewing, Toga sat on the opposite side of the counter, putting her chin in the palms of her hands, “It’ll only take a minute.”

“That’s fine. We could go over your short program while we wait.” He answered, kicking his foot into her leg.

“Ow-! I’m still sore, you jerk!” She kicked him back, but with more force than he had initially started with.

Letting out a yawn, Toga stretched her arms over her head, leaning back over her chair. As she came back to her normal sitting position, Tenko had pulled up her laptop and was showing her the recording of her performance earlier.

Nearly three hours had gone by since both parties had drank their tea and said goodbye for the night, yet, Toga was wondering why she hadn’t asked him to stay. It wasn’t as if he would’ve said no.

Checking the screen of her cellphone, the time said nine o’clock. Humming to herself, she unlocked the screen, and clicked on Tenko’s . Staring at the profile, she hesitated to press the call button, but she didn’t have too…

The screen lit up with a call. Tenko Shimura. Her finger froze for a moment before she answered, bringing the phone up to her ear. “Hello?”

“Hey, I was just wondering what you’re doing… I couldn’t sleep.” His voice came through the phone with a bit of scratching noises, she could tell he was calling about something else other than what she was doing. His voice was a dead give away. Not to mention the scratching.

“Ten… what’s really wrong?” She asked, her brows furrowing. Her worry was genuine. He was one of her only real friends after all.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just wanted to ask you…” He cleared his throat and then began to talk so fast that Toga could barely keep up, “I wanted to ask you out on a date tomorrow.”

For a moment, the phone call was silent, no one was talking. And then, “I would love that.”

Both persons seemed to breathe out a sigh of relief. “I’ll pick you up around six then. Wear something you’re comfortable in, but also classy.” His voice seemed to elevate from happiness.

“Sure thing. See you tomorrow Tenko.” A smile came to Toga’s lips, before they both said good night and hung up the phone.

Both parties turned their lights off and went to sleep content and filled with happiness.
