hiya. i know i made a post like this about a year ago, but i'd like to talk about it again since i really see it getting out of hand.

𝘗𝘚𝘈: 𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘫𝘰𝘬𝘦-hiya. i know i made a post like this about a year ago, but i'd like to talk about it aga

the first point i'd like to express is romanticizing mental disorders. i didn't expect to have to remind people not to do this, but here we are.

romanticizing mental disorders is basically taking a disorder (i.e depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc) and saying things such as, "i find that attractive", or "i love this character because they have x disorder".

allow me to shed some light on this situation:

that is very very wrong. why? people who have these disorders are truly suffering from them, and saying that you find them attractive for it will not make it any better, trust me. having things such as depression are not things that one can control, and if they could, then i'd suppose that they'd rather get rid of these disorders, wouldn't you think so?

saying things like "that's hot" is incredibly offensive and would certainly trigger a very awkward situation.

suffering from internal mental pain is awful and distressing, why would you find something like that attractive?

my next point is self diagnosing.

i see a lot of people having the need to put in their bios something like "i am depress qwp". yeah, i'm not too sure about that.

during my time on this amino, i have encountered many s like this and have reached out to them, whether by dm's or on their wall. some of the things they say can be downright disrespectful.

when referring them to a professional, i get "they're just in it for the cash" as a reply, and i have gotten it several times.

so if "they're just in it for the cash", then does that mean that we cannot frequent places such as hospitals, restaurants, and stores simply because the employees are working and gaining money in return?

also, if you have never gone to a professional, how do you even know you have these disorders? self-diagnosing is unsafe and untrustworthy, as you cannot do so when you don't experience things from a different point of view. in addition, online quizzes are unreliable as well. even on most websites, it is clearly stated that one should not assume the results are accurate, along with you being reffered to an actual doctor.

if you truly do experience intense symptoms, then please, speak to a professional or a hotline. in my country (the USA) at least, the national suicide hotline does have a chatting option if you do not wish to speak on the phone.

and lastly, i would like to touch the subject of asg disorders to characters.

look, i understand trying to find oneself in characters in order to find comfort, but projecting your feelings into them and calling them depressed is really taking them too far.

i commonly see this with characters such as denki kaminari and katsuki bakugou, who have so far not displayed many (if any at all) symptoms of anything like depression.

names like "depressed denki" can be incredibly offensive and flat out rude to those who are suffering, and truly don't make any sense. this is, again, an example of romanticizing and glorifying mental illnesses, which is not the right thing to do.

overall, have respect for yourself and others. putting illnesses on display like they're some something to be applauded at is wrong.

and to those of you who are suffering, know that it will get better and you're not alone. keep on fighting and it will have been worth it.

I COULDN'T SAY THUS BETTER MYSELF

I have seen way to many oc's just be given 1 to multiple disorders and it angers me so much.

One of my friends had a horrible case of depression last year(their ok now, still some slight thoughts here and there but getting much better :> )

It hurt me so much thinking they were like that and i tried my best to them as much as i could.. I'm glad she can talk to me if she has any problems ^

those people really don't get the pain-

Hopefully people will recognize this post, so more people can understand

i'm glad to hear that your friend is doing better

but of course, i genuinely don't understand why people toss these disorders around as if they're simple adjectives. i really hope some of them can eventually see what's wrong with that :/

I know people self diagnose but people really find mental disorders attractive? That’s horrible. They really need to stop treating serious illnesses as personalities and stop joking on sensitive topics. That’s messed up to an extent.

really pushes buttons i didnt know i had.

people think mental disorders are edgy or angsty or some shit, but dont have the sense to consider theyre i l l n e s s e s .

not like a cold, more like pneumonia..

they have nasty side-effects, sometimes long term and very dangerous ones..

life threatening even..

these things arent something to just glue to a character.

the glue analogy actually makes a bit of sense.

you can be stuck with these things and it feels like you cant get out.

really is a shame that people don't understand that.

mental illnesses aren't personality traits, folks. they're things people wake up with every day and have to deal with for either longer periods of time, of hell even the rest of their lives
