Stargazing Sparks
Starlit scarlet evening doused in the fervent fairy-like colours of the lovers’ fantasies, rejuvenated the world in a hazy semblance of mirth mirroring only love; mesmerising muses paving way for the artists, who were too intoxicated on the windowsill of their seventh heaven to mix up with the others and he, ittedly, permitted himself to follow his heart’s desire by brewing some fallacies with the flavours of his imagination and inspiration to the ixture of his supposed masterpiece. Notwithstanding the mere fact that he was deluded derisively at times when he had to conclude a love story; unintentionally intending to make it a tragedy instead of the stereotypical fantasy. Even if he was, impoverished in the field of romance, Kirishima was prolific in expressing emotions whilst artistically penning down his rather short and uncomfortable experience delving deeper into the character he certainly thought resembled him. As a mangaka, Kirishima had yet to prove himself to the world that he was skilled and determined to make-believe in his dreams of yore but as he cruised around himself and stepped into adolescence all the while, his jovial jejunity and innocent obliviousness sparred with the realistic notions set forth by the people in his line of work. Still, he preferred to enjoy his work even if the excruciatingly uncertain future of his would keep him down at some unfortunate times.
As he was browsing through the books in the library of his university, he wasn’t familiar with the time and surely, wasn’t willing to know either, for he believed in the sincerity of finishing a book from the very instance it was opened up to read. Henceforth, Kirishima lost himself in the candied universe of his delight, advantageously on the revered day of Valentine’s; only when he was perturbed by a voice, he looked up from his book with furrowed brows as a confused expression crossed his face at the sight of the intruder.
” Yes, is there something you need?” He asked hesitantly as he eyed the pink-haired woman who seemed to be on the verge of breaking down.
” I am so done with life. So done!” She exclaimed, making him cringe at her loud voice.
” That’s a nice way to greet a stranger. Are you alright?” Kirishima questioned as he stood up from his chair and awkwardly started to move towards her.
” Do I look alright? Can’t you see that I am anything but alright? Oh gosh, why in the world did I come here, I am so done with everything I just want to go home and curl up on my futon and eat to my heart’s content, is that so bad to wish for?!” The overwhelmed female sighed and suddenly threw her bag on the desk, almost startling him.
” Uh...I am not sure what I am supposed to say to that rhetoric question. But I think it’s getting late so you should leave if that’s what you want, but I think it’s better if you sort it out by doing what you love.” Kirishima internally cringed at his words, he was awkward when it came to conversations, especially with ladies and his friends were the same, if not worse than him, especially the one with the anger issues.
” What I love? Oh no, what I love cannot happen, you want to know why? Because I have been fired from doing what I love. All I wanted was to become a designer and start my fashion line but my boss apparently loathes me for whatever reason. Ugh, this is too much, I need a drink.” She groaned, facepalming herself in the process.
” I see, I am so sorry to hear that but it is not the end of the world you know? Whatever you are feeling right now, can be turned and channelled into something better. Why don’t you make use of these emotions to derive inspiration? It’s what I like to do when I am excruciatingly frustrated with everything. Maybe it can work for you too.” He suggested as he rummaged through his backpack for something.
” I don’t know, my mind is a jumbled mess right now.” She heaved a sigh for the umpteenth time.
” Well, I do have something to offer to you, I was saving this for home but I think you need it more than me.” Kirishima smiled as he showed her the expensive-looking bottle of red wine.
” Wait..really? I can have it? Hand it over now, then. Why are you even carrying this, you aren’t even afraid of being caught, huh? You have guts, man.” She rambled off as she aggressively took the bottle out of his hands and started to twist the cork around.
” Wait, let’s not drink it here. It’s disrespecting and not very...uh manly of us.” He added shyly, looking away with red cheeks.
” Huh?” She blinked at him.
” I have a place where we can...you know...drink this but not here, okay?” He told her and lugged his bag pack on his shoulder before motioning her to follow his lead.
” Fine with me. Where are we going then, shark-head?” She asked nonchalantly, grinning innocently at his expression.
” Shark head? My name is Kirishima Eijiro, not that.” He flushed under her gaze.
” Could’ve fooled me. I am Mina Ashido.” She introduced herself with a lazy smile.
” Right! Well, Mina-san, do you attend this university?” He hoped to make some small talk, but what he didn’t expect was for her to laugh at his question.
” University? Honestly, I should be flattered but sadly, I am way past the age to be in one, and judging from your looks, you don’t seem to be a student either, right?” Mina inquired from him but Kirishima could only stifle a nod in response before awkwardly speaking up.
” It’s just a part-time job I had to take upon, nothing much.” He always seemed to dislike his rather forced profession of teaching creative writing, but he had to say that he did enjoy it from time to time.
” So are you a hermit or something?” She questioned out of the blue, startling him.
” Hermit? Why would you think that?”’Kirishima was defensive, he surely didn’t expect to be judged so soon.
” Relax, shark-head! It’s just because of your dishevelled look. Seems to me that somebody here has been struggling with insomnia. Is that right? I can always tell these things.” She chuckled happily, whilst he only sweatdropped at her antics.
” Well that’s how a mangaka can look for inspiration. It’s the usual look for us.” He itted with a deflated sigh, he could care less about his appearance but being questioned by her seemed to be tiring for him.
” Huh? You’re into mangas then? I have always wanted to read a manga but I get distracted easily so, had to give up on it. Eh, I suppose it is good that I didn’t read it anyway since I get frustrated easily when things don’t go my way.” She chirped, as they approached the terrace of the university.
” Oh, uh...I see.” Kirishima added with much uncertainly before pushing past the door of the terrace.
” This looks so refreshing, oh gosh I have to say that the party was such a bummer. Got dragged by my friends thinking it would be good to sneak in as a uni student but it really sucked. Ah, would you look at that, there’s a bench, perfect for me to rest up.” Mina declared as she joyously clapped her hands and strutted towards the aforementioned bench but then, she suddenly came to a halt as she turned around to face a disturbed Kirishima, who was oddly looking back at her.
” Is there something you need?” He asked, a bit perturbed by her stare.
” Yup, since you’ve offered to sacrifice your wine for me, I should at least show my appreciation by offering you some company, Kirishima-Kun, what say you? Would you like to me? You should be thankful that I am even willing enough to share this preciousness with you, I am not always this nice, you know?” She smirked a bit before uncorking the bottle.
” Oh...But I have some papers to grade, so I should go back-“ He tried to reason with her but she was quick to interrupt.
” You’re such a spoilsport, Kirishima-Kun. Live a little, see what I believe is that life is just like a twinkling star of the galaxy.” She started, whilst looking up at the starry sky.
” Star?” He questioned, furrowing his brows at the strange comparison.
” Yes, star. Well, it is a little theory of mine but I think that our lives resemble the stars, we each have a purpose that we have to find and fulfil and we’re the brightest when we pursue happiness in our lives, and then someday, we have to disappear and combust into stardust thus, completing the circle of life. What I am trying to say is that these little moments might not seem much to you but one day, when you’ll look back, you’d find yourself wishing to have them back. Memories are like starlight, they are attached to the star of life and would always outshine the clouds of doom, it’s impossible to forget or live without, don’t you think so?” She summarised dreamily, making him question if she was the same person from before.
” That’s an interesting metaphor. I am really impressed.” He added after a few minutes of silence.
” Well, I have my moments, I am just not a bratty girl, I do have these recollections once in a while, but you really need to live a little. Plus, an artist can only discover himself if surrounded by life and its various art styles, at least that’s what my teacher used to say in fashion school.” She shrugged off.
” I get what you mean, Mina-san. Thank you for telling me this but I am just a bit lost, I think. I am not doing too well at the moment. I wish I could live a little instead of being so self-conscious about my dreams.” Kirishima itted with a sigh, as he perched beside her.
” Success always takes time, I mean you can’t just think of having the wine without the grapes, now can you? Eh, that was a weak comparison but do you get what I am trying to say here, just chill out.” She gave him a thumbs up and a reassuring smile.
” Yes...I guess. So, are you feeling better now?” He asked, feeling somewhat comfortable around her.
” Tch, feelings really suck but what can you do about them? One has to deal with the process of life and obstacles, so it’s okay to get a bit down at times but picking yourself up is the only significant thing. Say Kirishima-Kun, what were you doing in the library today out of all the days?” Her inquisitive gaze tried to discern his expression as he subtly turned the other way.
” I was..uh...I was looking for some inspiration as usual.” He shyly looked away.
” Now that is a complete lie.” She laughed at his baffled expression.
” What? I mean...it isn’t I really-“ He tried but he was interrupted again.
” As I have said before, I know these things and I can also tell when a person is so in love that he couldn’t resist the temptation to come to a lame uni party. You probably don’t even work here.” She said nonchalantly, provoking him a bit in the process.
” If you want some sort of proof then I can give you that, and you shouldn’t be prying into people’s lives you know, it is not a good thing to do.” Kirishima tried to be stern but he couldn’t do so under her intimidating gaze.
” So you it it then! Who is it, is she your colleague? Oh, a forbidden romance, now I like the thought of that.” Mina conclusively spoke her thoughts, making him a bit amused.
” She...I don’t love her or anything it’s just that she has become my-“ He started but was again interrupted.
” Oh don’t tell me you’re that kind of guy, the one who stares from afar and basically makes his love interest turn out to be some kind of a muse for him to derive his inspiration from. Kirishima-Kun, you’re doomed!” Mina exaggerated, sighing in mock sadness.
” T-that is not true. You’re assuming things, Mina-san.” He faltered when she looked at him with a knowing smile.
” Maybe I am, but I can tell these things.” She said as she took a sip from the bottle.
” But it isn’t what you think.” He stuttered.
” Well doesn’t matter, I am so tired though, I kind of feel like I am traipsing through the milky murky clouds, and soaring high like a kite.”
” That sounds beautiful.” Was all he could say, feeling quite stunned by her imagination.
” Right? I used to think of clouds like cotton candy when I was young like I literally begged my mum to get me a cloud but she just smiled at me like I was some oblivious creature of the universe who was as clueless as a feather, I am not making any sense, I think I am bit intoxicated.” She realised, smiling stupidly at herself.
Under the dazzling gems of Elysian, she was luminescent like limousine light trite, her eyes of pure juvenescence, silenced his intrusive thoughts with a dalliance of delirious paradise. Moon was sentiently playing a game of hiding and seek amongst his companions of night tide. She looked so ethereal like some eternal evanescence had blossomed into her infinitely relishing in the unique aura she seemed to be blessed with. Kirishima was star struck, for the first time in his life, he was able to feel an emotion that instigated him to feel as if his soul was set alight, as if stars had collided and combusted into the fairy dust of the universe, abridging the disillusioned and seemingly lost beings with only light and prosperity. Could this be a dream? Could it be his fallacy? The possibilities were endless and perhaps, he was on the brink of utter intoxication himself, but he could swear that she had a semblance of angelic splendour entrapped within her irises of glamour and galore.
” Kirishima-Kun?” Mina suddenly called out to gain his attention.
” Y-yeah?” He stammered unexpectedly, almost startled by her soft voice.
” May I ask you to read something for me? Preferably romantic with stars in the twilight, or something like unicorns riding on a sleigh, I would absolutely love that.” She excitedly declared, eyes shining radiantly like cerulean entities.
” I can try to come up with something b-but I cannot ascertain this-“ He tried but was interrupted rather abruptly by the flamboyant female.
” I know, but please, do it. Please, for me?” She begged with her eyes brimming with sheer desperation and enthusiasm.
” I will try,” He surrendered quickly to her demands, fingers instantly rummaging through his coat pockets for his favourite notepad to follow her request.
” Yes, thank you, I will patiently wait here whilst stargazing and daydreaming. Or is it night dreaming now, huh?” She mumbled to herself rather dazed by the enchanting scenery in front of her.
Meanwhile, Kirishima was quick to word her outspoken thoughts into a rhythmic chime. He was essentially struggling to come up with an idea for his poem, he wouldn’t necessarily consider himself as a poet but often, he would implement structural poetry into his works to veneer his masterpieces, like acrylics stencilling through the easel, he was sure to experiment with his skills from time to time. He sighed whilst scribbling on his notepad, he was in-adept, simply insufficient as a poet or so he tried to ruminate aimlessly regarding certain topics of interests, leading him to unconsciously focus his attention on her. As cliche as he thought it to be, he couldn’t cease his incessant staring when it concerned her. She was unusually beautiful, uniquely graceful in a way that would make someone question their world of beliefs, if only for a second. Her childish chiselled fallacies were one of a kind, abruptly outspoken and intriguing enthralling delicacies a rarity that was hard to come by. Rapidly scratching his pen across the roughened parchment, he would only recollect her being in sentences procured from his mind’s mellow iration cloyed to suit the most romantic occasion that the heavenly deities had blessed them with, that night.
” So? Are you done writing? I can’t wait to hear it, Kirishima-Kun, I bet it’d be fantastical, like fairies and mermaids flouncing about in the ocean.” Her eyes sparkled in the moonlit night, making him smile.
” I am not so sure about that, but I did try to think of something befitting, so I am sorry if it is not to your liking, Mina-san.” He sheepishly itted, offering her an apologetic smile.
” You are bluffing, I’d like anything, just get on with it, I am getting kind of impatient.” Mina huffed confidently.
” Okay, here it goes.” He cleared his throat before reading through the lines.
” Shining shores of shimmering seashells burned alight,
Like pinkish hued princely possums,
Permeating to the stars, like stunning sirens of the night,
Bewitching blues rewind mystic muses in vinyl trite,
Of her dreams painted in cotton candy rejuvenated insight,
On a winsome night festered by her to flavour her thoughts,
Intoxicated illusions circled past her to the lilac of serenity,
She was left stargazing, starry-eyed on a lover’s day festive dreaming,
Of a circus filled life, she was fairy gazing,
Curious Icarian eyes or plight and pride,
Refreshing beams of sunlight, starlight sunshine state of mind,
He was left wondering, idly feeling lot but free from dilly-dallying,
Like pearls residing in her frame of life,
She was ethereal, like the world’s only fair delight.”
” Wow, that was just amazing, Kirishima-Kun. You certainly are talented. And to include me in your poem, just proves my point that you really use women as you would use an object or a muse to channel your fantasies, right? I knew it!” She clapped her hands, thrilled to have confirmed her suspicions.
” That’s not true I was just, trying to comply with your requests. For an artist, it’s important to satisfy the audience.” He quickly became flustered by the insinuation.
” Oh you’re so wrong about that. If you create things just to satisfy others then you will never be able to satisfy yourself, Kirishima-Kun. It is important to do both, so that you don’t end up losing your thrill to create, even if you end up losing your supposed audience, you can always gain them back, that’s just how I do things.” She gave him a warm smile as they locked eyes.
” I was never told to think like that.” For some reason, he was unable to look away from the hypnotic world that resembled within her eyes.
” These thoughts come to you naturally, just like the thought of having an ice cream made from the colours of the actual rainbow, ugh, it’d be so delicious.” She licked her lips childishly, making Kirishima smile at her in adoration.
“Your imagination is magnificent, Mina-san.” He confessed.
” That’s such a compliment, thank you Kirishima-Kun, who would’ve known that you’d warm up to me so quickly.” She elaborated, giving him a devious smile that had immediately made him blush in retaliation.
” I didn’t, it takes me time to open up and-“ He tried but it seemed to be a habit for her to interrupt him at important times like this.
” Kirishima-Kun?” Mina blinked at him as she walked towards the red-head carefully.
” Yes, Mina-san?” Kirishima looked at her in wonderment.
” I like you. It feels weird but I feel as if I have always known you. Thank you for accompanying me, it’s not every day a ghost like me gets to drink such expensive wine with someone like you.” She broke into a nostalgic grin, but her words resounded deep within a gobsmacked Kirishima.
” G-ghost? But Mina-san, you- how can this, I don’t-“ He shook his head, breathlessly trying to question the sanity of the pink-haired woman.
” Well, the world is a fickle thing isn’t it? There’s still so much we have yet to discover but truth is that there’s not much to do for those who are already dead you know? I am not sure why I am still here but I feel alive, well at least with you. Wow, I am such a party pooper! I didn’t mean to startle you but I could see the sincerity in your eyes and well, thought to confide in you. Say, Kirishima-Kun are you afraid of ghosts?” She piped up, crossing her hands carelessly behind her pink tresses, seemingly feeling relaxed and unperturbed from what she had just disclosed to him.
” W-hat?” He stumbled away from her, hands shaking anxiously.
” I will take that as a confirmation. Now scaring you will be my ultimate goal.” She grinned, stepping towards him as he backed away from her.
” You are kidding, right? Mina-san, this is a joke, isn’t it? I am not oblivious okay, I know you’re not a ghost or something.” Kirishima chuckled in disbelief, she was just toying with him, he could see through her.
” Believe whatever you want to believe, after all, isn’t that your job? I am just going to drink this and entertain myself with your befuddlement.” Mina giggled to herself before reaching for his hand.
” That’s cruel, I am so confused now.” He shook his head, trying to rid himself of the supposed truth as the mysterious woman took his hand in her hold with mischief lighting up her eyes.
” Told you, I’d be your rollercoaster ride.” She chirped with a genuine smile, making his head spin from everything. Her dazzling, delirious smile had infiltrated his senses, almost taking over his sense of rationality as he held onto her rather forcefully in hopes of not losing his balance.
” Who are you?” Was all he could say before abruptly ing out.
