accurate, please forgive me.

Chisaki pulled his gloves over his hand, snapping it against his wrist. He pulled the mask over his nose and mouth, approaching what some might describe as a setup similar to a meth lab. He drummed his fingers on the counter, his yellow eyes surveying the options laid out before him. He had been working on this serum for months, and had made no progress. Now, whenever he looked at the ingredients, all he could think of were things he had already tried. Every Possible combination has already been attempted. Was he missing something? Some vital ingredient? What could it possibly be?

"Maybe you should focus on something else?" a voice made him jump. He spun on his heel to see Hari standing by the door. He also wore gloves, but no mask covered the bottom half of his face. He had his arms crossed as he leaned against the wall, scrutinizing Chisaki and the setup before him. "You've been obsessing over it for so long. It's beginning to be unhealthy."

Chisaki appreciated that Hari was concerned for his safety, but in their line of work, health wasn't a priority. Everything they did was dangerous, and he couldn't let Hari talk him away from achieving success. What kind of a leader would he be if he took a mental health day? He needed to instill fear and respect into his subordinates. He turned toward the setup again, gritting his teeth. "This is essential," he explained to his right-hand man. "If I finish this soon, we could immediately start doing something worthwhile."

"You haven't even shared what it is," Hari said, "so we don't know why this is so important to you. It's a little worrying." Chisaki blinked, looking over his shoulder at Hari again. Had he really not said anything? Everybody had just watched him lock himself in this room day after day for months, without any explanation. He wasn't concerned about keeping his subordinated up to date, but he felt a twinge of guilt that he hadn't shared anything with Hari. The experiment had consumed him, and he hadn't realized how much it had affected their communication.

He pushed himself away from the counter, approaching the silver-haired individual. Hari straightened his posture off the wall, recognizing that he would finally be getting some answers. "Since we lost the kid, we've been very far behind," Chisaki started, stopping a few paces in front of Hari. He was speaking quietly, as if he was concerned somebody might be trying to eavesdrop. "All I could scrounge up was some hair of hers. I've been trying my best to extract DNA, and hopefully some traces of her quirk, from it. If we can just secure a little bit of that power, we should be able to study and replicate it."

"Why didn't we replicate it when we had the live specimen with us?" Hari asked. "Was that just something that didn't occur to us?"

Chisaki glared at Hari, knowing he had a point. "We don't even know if it was possible. We weren't at risk of losing her, so there was no need to spare the time and resources on trying to replicate it. We could just use her quirk as long as she was with us."

"If you don't even know if its possible, why are you still trying?" Hari asked. "Or at least, why are you only trying this one possibility? Shouldn't you devote your time to other ideas as well, to see what yields results the fastest?"

"Do you have any other ideas?" Chisaki spat. The question was bitter, brought about by his frustration at his inability to stop the heroes from taking Eri. She was perfect for what they were trying to achieve. He had gotten too eager, made a move before they were fully ready. He had learned to be patient. So, no matter how long it took, he would find a stable way to achieve his goal.

Hari was quiet, his blue eyes cast to the floor between them. "Fair enough," he mumbled, realizing he couldn't offer an alternative. "But, at least make a compromise. After your research today, let's hang out and just relax. If you overwork yourself, you're only going to cripple your advancement."

Chisaki turned toward the lab. He knew he should keep working on the serum, but wanted nothing more than to just go out for a drink with Hari. Hari had always known what's best for his health, and always seemed to be looking out for him. If it wasn't for him, Chisaki probably would have ended up dead long ago. "Yeah...okay," he replied, walking to the equipment. "Deal. I'll see you later." He waved Hari off dismissively, and heard the door to the room open and close.

When Chisaki left the room, he found Hari already waiting for him outside. He was dressed up, in a nice formal shirt and dress pants. Meanwhile, Chisaki's outfit was dirtied from spills and splashes of various liquids and powders. "What's with the outfit?" Chisaki asked as he ed Hari, heading towards his sleeping room to change.

"I figured we could risk a night in the town," Hari explained. "As long as we don't run into any heroes, nobody should recognize us, especially if we dress nice."

"How does out outfit affect people's ability to recognize us?" Chisaki asked. Hari shrugged, but Chisaki couldn't see it as he made a beeline for his room. "Fine, we'll go to the nearest bar. The barkeep there knows better than to try anything with us."

Hari tapped his foot anxiously as he waited for Chisaki to dress. The brunette really needed to relax. He had been obsessing over his project for several months, and Hari was concerned for his mental health. But that hadn't been the only reason he suggested going out tonight. In addition to being mentally unhealthy, this obsession had drastically decreased the time the two spent together. Once, being Chisaki's right-hand man meant assisting him in nearly everything. Now, after they had lost Eri, Chisaki seemed too distraught to ask for Hari's help.

As for the reason Hari was anxious? Because he was unsure if his feelings were reciprocated. He wasn't one for romance, but this period of prolonged separation from Chisaki caused him to realize how much he enjoyed him. He feared Chisaki would laugh at the mere idea of a possible romantic relationship. They were criminals, they didn't have time for lovey-dovey stuff. He was too intense for that.

Hari flinched as Chisaki emerged from his room, shaken from his thoughts. The brunette had changed into something nice, but he didn't look excited. His expression was blank and his gaze distant, clearly still thinking through what he could do with his work. "You look nice," Hari ventured awkwardly. Chisaki rewarded him with a thoughtful hum, clearly not paying attention. Hari's heart sank, knowing tonight wouldn't go the way he wanted. Still, he had to try.

He straightened his posture and manufactured a forced confidence as he offered his arm to Chisaki. Yellows eyes snapped toward him, the brunette brought to the present. There was a look of confusion and apprehension as he took the arm, allowing Hari to escort him out. Luckily, he didn't ask any questions.

There was already a car waiting for them outside. One of Hari's friends, who had begrudgingly ed an owed favor. Their arms separated as Hari opened the back door for Chisaki and sat on the opposite side. While Hari messed with his hands anxiously, Chisaki seemed distracted, lost in thought, unaware of the state of his partner, nor his intentions for the night.

Hari would have preferred sharing a conversation with Chisaki, but didn't want to do so in ear shot of the one driving them, so the ride was silent until they stepped out. They were in front of a tiny run-down bar in the corner of an alley. Not the most romantic place, but the safest. Here, even if people recognized them, they wouldn't care enough to report them. Almost everybody who attended this bar was wanted to some degree.

"Drinks are on me," Hari offered, looking at Chisaki in hopes of seeing his reaction. His heart was only let down again as all Chisaki did was hum in acknowledgement. Entering the bar revealed it to be nearly empty, with only two other patrons, both on opposite sides of the building. The barkeep was on his phone behind the counter, and didn't glance up at them as they approached.

Chisaki tapped his finger on the counter to get the barkeep's attention, but the sound was muted through the fabric of his glove. Instead, Hari coughed and said, "Are you gonna serve us or not?"

The bartender looked up at them, revealing her violet eyes. "What the hell do you want?" she demanded, her voice like a hiss. The two men placed their orders. The woman didn't move, but instead, her hair snakes around the cabinets behind her, grabbing everything she needed and preparing the drinks while she continued to type away on her phone.

Despite the service, the drinks weren't that bad. Hari and Chisaki sat opposite each other at a booth. "Maybe if we had a different source of DNA," Chisaki started to say, "like her blood. A single drop of her blood might have been much more potent."

"Chisaki?" Hari asked, drawing his attention. "We're not here to talk about work. Let's just relax."

"Oh," Chisaki mumbled, realizing he hadn't stopped thinking about his experiments at all. He looked around at their surroundings, as if he hadn't realized they were in a bar. He also took the time to analyze Chisaki's outfit, realizing it was nicer than normal. "What's with the getup?"

"I wanted this to be a nice evening," Hari answered honestly. "I know we have limited options for where to go, but we can at least pretend it's a nice place."

"A nice evening," Chisaki mumbled under his breath, and Hari watched as his expression shifted slightly. He had caught on that this was supposed to be a date. And yet, the brunette didn't betray any emotions.

"How long have we been partners?" Hari asked. "How many years?"

Chisaki didn't have an answer. He had never kept track of the age of time when it came to his allies. People come and go, their wills as weak as a straw wrapper. And yet, thinking back on it, he couldn't even when Hari showed up. He just ed him suddenly there, and staying there as what felt like generations of people swore their allegiance to the cause only to decide it wasn't for them. Hari had always stayed. "A long time," was all he could say to encapsulate everything.

"Would it be ridiculous if I were to confess to having developed a strong bond with you?" Hari continued. "And wish to further develop that bond?" The questions were worded so professionally, as if Hari were proposing a new business venture. Chisaki gazed into his dark grey eyes, gauging his sincerity. At first, Chisaki believed they revealed nothing. He quickly realized they were trying their best to remain professional and unemotional. Hari wasn't comfortable having such a potentially sensitive conversation. His professional demeaner was a scapegoat in case Chisaki didn't reciprocate.

"It would not be out of place," Chisaki said, mimicking his professionalism while holding back a coy smile. "I must it that you've become an important person of my life as well."

Hari took a moment to collect himself before saying, "Would you be interested in a more personal relationship?"

Realistically, Chisaki couldn't afford a partner. His line of work was a dangerous one. Having a partner meant having a weakness, meant having a distraction. And yet there was such hope in Hari's gaze. Chisaki would be lying if he claimed he didn't wish to have a personal relationship. And hell, Hari was the best candidate.

"I'd be very interested," Chisaki replied, and Hari released a breath of relief. "Now, can we drop this dumb tone? I'm quite sure partners don't talk to each other as if they're businessmen."

Hari had hoped being in a relationship with Chisaki would change things up at work. He hoped the brunette would be a bit more personable with him, use him for emotional . But nothing changed. Figuring Chisaki had never been in a relationship, Hari figured he should make an example. Every once in a while, he'd bring a gift for Chisaki. It was always met with a grateful smile before his boss just returned to work.

Any attempt at physical during work was a no-go as well. Chisaki worked in a sterilized environment, and would have no such thing. After about a month, things still hadn't changed at all, even outside of work. Chisaki still treated Hari as nothing more than a trusted subordinate.

One day, as Chisaki tore off his gloves as he left his lab, he found Hari sitting on a chair. He raised an eyebrow inquisitively. Chisaki had worked overtime today, and it was quite late in the night. He'd figure the silver-haired man would be sleeping. Instead, he motioned to a chair next to him, in which Chisaki sat.

" when I asked if we could be in a relationship?" Hari started the conversation. Chisaki nodded slowly, confused. Of course he ed. He wouldn't just forget he has a boyfriend now. "So, since then, I've been trying my best to be your boyfriend, but...I don't really get any love from you. Nothing's changed."

Chisaki chewed his lip. He had made an effort to talk to Hari more, whenever he took a break. "I've been trying to give you more attention," he voiced his thoughts.

"All you ever talk to me about is work," Hari pointed out. "Even when I try to have a more personal conversation, you're quick to avoid it." Chisaki grimaced. He couldn't deny that. He hated talking about anything emotional, even in private. "Are you sure you want to be in this relationship?"

Chisaki felt his stomach lurch. Had he really upset Hari to the point where he already wanted to break up? Were personal and emotional conversations part of the package? What else was he expected to do? His mind shifted into overdrive. As thoughts raced past, Hari leaned forward towards him, his face filling up more of his vision. A certain peace fell over Chisaki. Even if he was scared of how little he knew about relationships, he felt it would be worth it for Hari. "Yes, I'm sure," he answered. "I just might...need some help."
