Hello~! It’s Ayumi, if you didn’t know, I’m the creator of the Visionary Creators! The Visionary Creators is a agency formed around OCs, and what better way than to start a official group project then by making a group OC tip!

The way this works is this is divided into multiple parts, and each member has a certain part they do~! I decided to post this so I can collect all the information to make it seem fine, as well as to format it! So I’ll link everyone who worked on this, and specify their parts:

Name. - Ayumi.

Quirk. - Ayumi.

Design. - Hailstorm.

Personality. - Twylight.

Backstory. - Aureolin.

Ideology. - Ayumi.

Voices. - Pastel.

Habitual. - Asta.

Relationships. - Jamie.

Stats. - Ayumi.

Roleplaying and writing. - Kiwi.

Symbolism. - Iota.

We hope you take your time to read this, our put a lot of effort into it! Some of them I had to help out for the deadline, but in all they did amazing. Check out their links, show them some ! And damn that’s a LOT of links!

You may be thinking, “Hey, what’s the big deal with names that you’ve got to categorize it?” some of you may also think, “Finally, tips on how you name an OC!” Regardless of whichever you are, naming an OC is actually quite important. A name sticks with an OC for its whole life, it’s not something you can throw away and restart, a name defines someone. Take your name for example, it defines you, people call you by it nearly everyday, if you have friends, everyday even! If someone suddenly renamed you something, you wouldn’t like that, would you? Or if you got a stupid name with no meaning, you wouldn’t like that either, correct?

“A name defines a person, a stupid name sticks with people, a clever one stands out even more.” - Ayumi Venniastassia.

Naming shouldn’t just be meaningless like “Hey, I what this word means let’s use it.” Naming should be thought out, if you don’t love your OC enough to give them a proper name, do you really even care about them?

Thats why I’m here! When naming an OC, you don’t want to make the first mistakes I made. I thought hey, Venniastassia sounds cool, and I ed Mizuki, so I made that a name. So sorry for Ayumi Mizuki Venniastassia. Later on, I found out about how to name an OC properly, and here’s how to.

Try using a translation, a mix between two words even! Sylmoru is actually a mixture name. Sylph meaning an imaginary creature or spirit, and or fairy. While Minamoru meant to watch over. Her quirk is fairy, henceforth a nice mixture, fairy watching over.

Now, earlier you saw how quirks affect the name right? You won’t just name an OC with a fire quirk Mizu. Mizu means water! Google translate or Behind the name are good ways to finding names that show off your OCs appearance and personality! Even in last names google translation or Behind the name is good for that!

Overall for naming, you want something that portrays your character! And that was how you can~! Hope you enjoyed.

                                                XOXO

                                Ayumi Venniastassia

No I’m not an overachiever, this is really the process of naming.

Quirks come in three different types. The emitter type, the mutant type, and the transformation type. Many people go for emitter types but there’s a wide variety to go for.

Emitter types are types that have things emitted from them, like Bakugo’s explosions. To make a good emitter quirk, think of possibilities for things that came out of someone that they can use. , just because you’ve seen the idea before doesn’t mean you can’t use it, just work around it.

Mutation types are my personal favorite, (Ayumi ere’) since they aren’t used as much in my opinion, and really expand what you’re working with. Take my OC Chiyoko for an example. Chiyoko is a mutation that’s pretty unique and different from a lot of subjects worked on. She’s a sea cockroach, or isopod, mutant. When making a mutation quirk, they key factors to keep in mind are, how does it work, how does it affect them, does it affect them in a good or bad way, if good, how does it affect their personality, if bad, how does it affect their personality, and finally, their design. Those are important and key factors when making a mutation quirk. ^^.

As for transformation quirks, you have a wide area, but somewhat limited. To make a good transformation quirk, think of something like an animal, mythical being, or a liquid that your OC could turn into for a period of time. Once you’ve got an idea, you can go from there. , transformation quirks don’t last forever and the returns to their original state, so if you’re making a transformation quirk where it’s like my OC (Still Ayumi) where it physically grows out of his back, the OC will feel it grow, and it’ll affect their body weight and affect them in general.

Drawbacks are also major in quirks, so are strong points. To make a good OC, don’t just make one or two drawbacks, make at bare minimum three, unless the quirk is a really bad quirk in general. Such as, amazing vision. Also, don’t make your drawbacks something simple like, “Gets headache after twenty minutes of use.” Those are overused, unless your OC has an actual reason to get one.

Strong points are also overused at times due to making them extremely powerful, refrain from that. Think about their quirk for an actual moment, and think of the positives of it if they were actually in the show or manga.

Ayumi.

Basic Principals of Design

- Function

. The audience needs to understand the basic way a charecter moves in different costumes and how they move differently under certain circumstances.

1 Details

Details can help or hurt a charecters in many ways, especially in where you put them. You do not need 50 bajillion parts in a costume to make it look good. Simplicity in a charecter is as good as a detailed one when you use it the right way.

Poor Example

Transformers Film Series = The charecters had way to many parts, showing that they were a complex structure, but also are too complex for someone to draw or understand their parts on their own

Good Example

Korra, from The Legend of Korra = Her charecter design is detailed, but easy to understand on a basic level.

4 Dynamic

Dynamic is an important role in the category of Function, and helps the audience understand how a charecter interacts with an enviornment. An author needs to have atleast a simple understanding of how their costume, bodybuild, and other clothing effect how they move around in an enviornment.

Poor Example

Giant Mecha Armour = These, seen in many forms of anime and other cartoons, doesn't exactly make sense for a charecter. It would be way to heavy, and a charecter wouldn't be able to move, although some do easily anyways.

Good Example

Spider-Man = He has a light body-build, and a light costume, so it is easy to understand how he flies through the air on his webs. His design also allows him to dodge attacks and punches easily.

7 Research

An author needs to be able to understand how their charecter's accessories, weapons, and clothing work to help and hurt the charecter in different ways. And research can help give the author ideas for what the charecter should look like themselves.

Poor Example

?

Good Example

Oscar from The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn = Oscar's design changes according to what situation is. In his World War || adventure, he is wearing an appropriate outfit for that era, and his face actually changes, too! And his outfit changes for other adventures that he goes on.

8 Clothes

A charecter's clothing is an easy way to convey a person's personality, but also needs to be functional and understandable. Too much clothing can weigh a person down, simple designs in clothing is usually better.

Poor Example

Bentham from One Piece = Just... what

Good Example

The Heathers= Their styles may be outdated, but their clothes fit almost perfectly with the time period and show off their individual personalities without being against the dress code or to big/small

9 Charecter's Enviornment

A charecter's walk, movement, speech, and accessories are only some of the things that can be effected by where a person lives. A person who lives in a very cold climate will not wear a tank top and shorts, and vice versa. The charecter should also move differently in different environments, mostly in extreme temperatures or places that restrict certain senses.

Poor Example

?

Good Example

Southern Water Tribe from Avatar the Last Airbender = Their outfit reflects their tribe, their enviornment ( cold, it landscape ), and it shows their unionality.

Some parts that you want to take into consideration when you make a personality is Quirks. The Quirk molds the figure that you make. If you make a Quirk that involves fire, you may want to make a person that has a heavily extroverted persona, while one with ice and shadows will be more or less quiet and reserved. You don’t have to have to shape it fully on the Quirk; get original! Just because you have a blood-molding Quirk, you don’t have to make them a sadistic edgelord!

We can see this with people such as Eijiro Kirishima and Shoto Todoroki. Kirishima is VERY boastful, and is set on his goals. So to speak, he is as ignorant and set-in-his-ways as a boulder (see what I did?). We can also see this with Todoroki. He can be cold and distant, but has a raging side that bursts forth when angered. Both sides of his Quirk work to his shaping of personality.

“Regarding tragic pasts I must ask, are they very necessary? Your character doesn’t need to be tragic in order to be appealing to an audience, and if they did have something bad happen to them I want to know how did they try to work around it? Or did they just let it overtake them. Another key point is not every bad thing needs to happen in your characters childhood, it is easy to see why as you want to start off your character with a bang however it’s not always wise especially when that tragic event could have been more impactful with the proper buildup

A lot of people don’t always struggle with bad things from their adolescence and you could even go up to college without your character having that fundamental turning point”

If something bad happens make it either be something that’s been built up or have it kick the feet out from underneath your character, make it sudden and unexpected but at the same time believable, natural disasters work well for this because you won’t blame a character for being helpless to the forces of nature

In fact a fire or earthquake will shatter their world view more than it being done by a person because it will be harder to place blame, you can’t exactly blame the earth for acting naturally can you?

Concerning themes

What theme do you want prevalent in your OCs backstory? In fact what theme or themes do you want to permeate throughout your characters wiki? You should try and find one while writing because it will make it much easier to tell where you want your characters story to go

Backstory? Why not a Entire Story?

Giving your OC a backstory is very important but you should never see the end of that backstory as exactly that “the end” If you decide to end when their backstory ends and they are at their current age that is fine however many readers are left with a lingering desire to know more and it helps in the long run to envision what your OC would be doing several years after their backstory ends. If you take this to the logical extreme when they are elderly or even to their deathbed you will improve immensely in your creation of OCs

No one likes thinking about their OCs death, however unlike the biologically immortal jellyfish (If you get that reference, props to you) your OC is very human despite their quirks and powers, they will die someday so you should think about how they leave their mark on the world as they on. One thing I like to think about is the second Rocky movie, it takes place after the happy ending, it explores the new issues the hero faces and in fact his life may have worsened in several ways that he has to struggle to overcome. I challenge you to think about your OCs happy ending and then wonder what happened next. What will they face? Who will they train to carry on their legacy? In fact this goes into my next point

Creating a legacy

It’s hard to move on from one of, some people create them every time they sit down to think and others think of a new one every time congress is able to agree on something.

However despite going at our own paces you should consider what characters carry on after your OC es away. I found this makes for a very effective tool in OC creation as I move on through multiple time periods of OC’s don’t chain yourself to one OC and world. Because the world changes correct?

Ideology is something pretty overlooked when making an OC, some wikis don’t even describe a character’s ideology, which is absolutely wrong. Ideology makes a character what they are. You can call them a hero, but why are they a hero? Call them a villain, why are they a villain?

A good ideology is something like;

Ever since she found herself in a harsh predicament when she was around 7, Nara had always wanted to be a hero. Experiencing the cruel wrath of a villain when she was little, and losing one of her family , she didn’t want others to suffer the same pain and trauma she went through. No child should have to go through what she went through, and lose someone beloved to them. Nara is determined to become a hero in order to help others, and stop the ones who bring chaos and disorder to the world. (Somewhat spoiler for an OC— Nara Hikari {Ayumi})

A bad ideology would be like;

Since a child, he saw heroes on tv, thought they looked nice, and wanted to become one.

Please, elaborate. What did they like from heroism? What hero got them into it? What was the key factor or prime factor of their turning point to becoming one.

All in all, just make sure your OC’s Logic to becoming what they are makes sense. There has to be a reason for everything, and if you’re making a villain OC that just likes to murder, try some reason behind it like a mental illness of sorts, or a turning point in their life that they saw cruelty of some sorts.

Many people skip the step of finding your oc’s voice actor, but it can be a great asset of knowing exactly who your oc is and making a finished oc. So I’m here to help you on finding your oc’s voice! First step is knowing your oc’s personality, are they a cute bubbly character, or have a more serious personality? You wouldn’t give Bakugou (voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto) a voice like Midoriya (voiced by Daiki Yamashita). It’s important to know what personality your oc has before finding their actor. Next is doing your research, try searching up famous voice actors and see what characters they have voiced. Or if you have someone in mind already, good! See what other characters they have voiced to make sure it is the perfect fit. Sometimes it doesn’t even have to be from an anime, if it fits, it fits! We are all about creativity here!

Well, first off I’d like to say thank you again for the chance to do this! It makes me so excited, but before I explode I’ll do this.

So, habits for an OC are like tendencies they get when experiencing being nervousness or anger, you don’t need them for every single emotion. It’s preferable to give them these little tendencies even though I don’t like to it’d be wise to if you want your character to be just a little bit more diverse. Here’s are some examples I consider good, if they twiddle their fingers when nervous if they’re shy, ruffling their shirt when frustrated if they try to keep cool but have a bit of trouble, even flicking a pencil or playing drum beats on desks or something when bored. “Bad” examples I guess would be vague things such as something like they look at their phone, describe what they do on their phone unless it’s something like trying to escape an awkward date or wedding or something when you have literally nothing to say during it. Habits don’t have to just be tendencies, they can be things the character likes or dislikes too. A character without something they like or dislike is just bland and not very good unless there’s something that just draws attention to them somehow, but that doesn’t happen often so likes and dislikes bring people together or tear them apart depending on if they agree or disagree with somebody else. Make it something common or simply interesting if it’s not common, it could literally just be heroes, video games, and anime. Something more exciting or even menacing like, destroying earth for an example are decent but may come off creepy. Those are pretty good to like but bad things to like would be murder, gore, blood, etc, if they like that keep it a secret cause it could drive people away from you in roleplay (yes, I know I sound like a girlfriend trying to “fix” their boyfriend to be “perfect”). Good dislikes would basically be what I just said about the blood, guts, gore, etc, gross things would be preferable but those aren’t as bad.

Relationships with ocs can be shown in many ways, whether in love or with friends

First off, relationships are built up using a characters personality, something that is crucial to having a good time. Without side tracking ill continue. So a lovey dovey relationship can be fun, nice and good, and yes its good, but plenty of times, people will overuse it, making it boring and dull.

For friendship relationships, whether canon or oc based it can make or break a character, what i mean by this is that not all relationships are good, some can be bad, and many and i mean mamy people make super happy ocs, it isn't normal, that all relationships are made from personality.

Stats, this is something in which all character’s physical or mental attributations are shown. Preferably, stats should be rated 1/10, ten being most, one being worst. You should tend to avoid the 10 though, because 10 labels or as abnormal, abhuman, new level of ability. Ten is showing extreme strength in something, and if your OC has it, what’s the fun in it? What’s the fun if the whole OC has just overpowered stats?

You should try to make an OC with stats like, 7/10 strength, 8/10 agility, 7/10 defense, 9/10 quirk control, 5/10 quirk power.

As you see from that example, the stats are balanced out with 9 being the maxed number used.

Don’t make something like 9/10 agility, 10/10 strength, 10/10 defense, 10/10 quirk control, 9/10 quirk power.

That’s unrealistic, and too powerful for an OC, probably only All Might can have that, but no OC should have that amount of power that rivals OFA.

Alright. I shall take on from here. I'm kiwi or you may call me kiwi sama and my topic here is almost everyone in amino's favourite roleplay

Role-playing styles and personal views

In amino, there's three official role-play style which are non literate (illiterate), semi literate and full literate. These three styles of role play are very important since it also determines what kind of person are you just by knowing your role play style. Below is some of my personal view and description for each role-playing style.

1) non literate

Non literate is the most used role play style since it is simple and easy. Normally people put symbols like * , - and so on for the characters actions.

Example: *walks into class* hello!

This role-playing style is mainly used by beginners and people who does bother to put more effort into their work to make their characters truly alive in role plays. This role play style symbolizes you being a person who is impatient and just likes to do things the easy way. This role play style has it's advantages too. The role player doesn't have to think much on grammar usage and replying and can send replies without letting people wait so long.

2) Semi literate

Now then. This is a higher level of non literate. This role play style doesn't use symbols for actions but instead for words. It has a rule of at least 3 sentences needed to do this style and also a more decent grammar

Example: Saigiri was sitting in her room drinking a cup of freshly made orange juice. She looked at the pictures she had draw for her writer brother while g. "Is he even home by now?" She mumbles under her breathe while looking at the sunset outside her window.

Now this role play style can tell that you are getting into the role-playing zone but still not the best. It is also the best choice for people who has more decent grammar. The advantage is that people will understand your oc better and even makes your oc more alive in the story.

3) Full literate

This is the highest level of role play where the rules are the same as semi lit but now with the minimum of 5 sentence

Example: At the sea so blue as big. The breeze of the bright blue sea appeared blowing as a figure's straw hair along with his black hair flow with the wind on the ship of his. He is going to be the next king just like that guy who lost his arm when saving him from the sea.

He looks at a paper that has flew into his hands with a bright smile on his face. Wanted - $99999999999

Monkey D Luffy

Now this role play style are for people who are more experienced in role-playing and able to think in just a few seconds and probably even super fast writing. The advantage is that your character can be fully related into the story abd somehow one with the story.

3 problems you must prevent in role plays

1) Role play according to your character

Just imagine people using bakugou's personality to role play deku or todoroki is suddenly a father loving play boy. This normally happened because people just wanted to use the fame of the canon character to get online girlfriends or just isn't familiar enough with the canon characters. I'm not trying to stop creativity to do so but sometimes following the canon route of the character is important depending on what role play you're attempting

2) Don't ever do 18+ role play

It is not only against the guidelines but also disgusting. Even know this is a 13+ app, you never know who are you talking to. A 7 years old? A 64 years old? Nobody knows. Only the itself knows. 18+ role play should be banned in anywhere.

3) Auto dodging, auto hitting and godmodding

Now this is the most serious case in an amino based on quirks and action. Auto dodging and auto hitting are one of the most annoying tings you will encounter in role plays

What is auto dodging and hitting?

It is when a dodges everything your oc does and hits, injuries or even kills your oc without giving you a chance to fight back.

Example:

*i dodge all of your attack and stab you to death* you're dead. I won

This is extremely annoying and really pisses me off. If you're one of these people, be sure to change hus habit or you're not going to make good friends or so

To prevent auto dodging and hitting:

*i took the hit but stand up again while trying to stab you*

Now this is how you should write, non literate role players. You should give your opponents a chance to dodge and take some damages from time to time. Even all might was injured and take hits.

Godmodding is when you decided to make your oc a god like having him immune to all quirk, no backdraws and so on which is just. No

That's all for now since if i continue to write. I might end up writing a blog of myself. I shall transfer the channel to the next person

Kiwi sama. Out.

Symbolism

Symbolism is the practice or art of using an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. An action, person, place, word, or object can all have a symbolic meaning. When an author wants to suggest a certain mood or emotion, he can also use symbolism to hint at it, rather than just blatantly saying it.

Symbolism in Literature

[CO] Symbolism is often used by writers to enhance their writing. Symbolism can give a literary work more richness and color and can make the meaning of the work deeper.

In literature, symbolism can take many forms including:

A figure of speech where an object, person, or situation has another meaning other than its literal meaning.

The actions of a character, word, action, or event that have a deeper meaning in the context of the whole story.

TIP: We Oc creators can use Symbolism to enhance our Literate Rps, Personalities, Backstories and such.

Metaphors as Symbolism

A metaphor is a figure of speech that uses symbolism.

It compares two things that are not similar and shows that they actually do have something in common.

In a metaphor, there is an additional meaning to a word. This makes it an example of symbolism.

Examples:

Life is a roller-coaster: This is symbolic because it indicates that there will be ups and downs in life that you have to weather.

Love is a jewel: This is symbolic because it suggests that love is rare and pressure.

TIP: According to me, These Symbolic metaphors can be used in Rps. But how to use it is completely up to you.

Symbolism in Colors

Black is used to represent death or evil.

White stands for life and purity.

Red can symbolize blood, ion, danger, or immoral character.

Purple is a royal color.

Yellow stands for violence or decay.

Blue represents peacefulness and calm.

Extra note: These colors are the most basic. There are even more colors out there which hold a deeper symbolic meaning.

TIP: Use these

Colors for Hair color, eye color, Costume color, etc. This will add a certain depth to the character.

Symbolic objects

Objects are often used to symbolize something else:

A chain can symbolize the coming together of two things.

A ladder can represent the relationship between heaven and earth or ascension.

A mirror can denote the sun but when it is broken, it can represent an unhappy union or a separation.

Symbolism in Flowers

Even flowers can have a symbolism:

Roses stand for romance.

Violets represent shyness.

Lilies stand for beauty and temptation.

Chrysanthemums represent perfection.

Conclusion

Symbolism, as you see, can be found almost anywhere. Any time there is something that represents more than its literal meaning, this can be an example of symbolism.

This was a very useful blog and I'm glad it got a Feature! You all did a wonderful job breaking down each little detail of creating an OC and giving decent examples of a right or wrong way to do things.

It was very hard for me to read though, due to everything being center-aligned and all the same style of text. It almost seemed... boring and dull. I personally would've utilized Bold and Underlines a bit more often and maybe add some visual examples too. Those would make your tutorial a lot more effective and easier for short-attention spans to follow along with.

Overall, I feel this is a great start! I hope a lot of people who are beginning to create an OC (like myself) take note of these tips!

Ahhhh thank you so much, it really makes me happy to hear you enjoy my agency’s work.

Sorry about that, we were already behind on our due date, the tpl wasn’t finished due to our artist going on a trip, it was OCLoveFriday today and I wanted it published, the post was nearly or possibly above 5K words, so formatting was pretty laggy that I couldn’t and probably shouldn’t put images in, and such. Formatting grammar mistakes also took awhile, along with getting links. ^^. It was a last minute thing for the time frame we had, for I was on a retreat the last few days and had gotten sick. ^^.

I’ll take that into consideration, I just really [CI] everything, and let the rest off since that’s how the member’s write in their own style.

Thanks for those kind words, I really do hope others do take note and believe in their abilities.

XOXO

An example of poor design is Momo, for the following reasons:

- It doesn't visually communicate anything about her personality besides the fact that she may be comfortable with her body (which is just Horikoshi being nasty out of universe, so that message is undermined imo).

- It has no relationship to her environment, and gives no signals as to what her standard setting is.

- She has a very voluptuous build, and is drawn with lots of soft shapes (circles, ovals). It is not unique to her theme as it is for Midnight's (sexy, feminine).

There's an article by illustrator Aaron Diaz I really like, that I think everyone struggling with character design should read. It is a large part of how I judge character designs to this day:
