Life was fair to some and cruel to others. One would think that knowing who their soulmate is would be a good thing. The moment they uttered each others' names, they would be branded with an undeniable mark. It removed the fear of choosing the wrong person, taking the tension out of searching for the one. In short, it was efficient. Some people appreciated it.
Others, on the other hand, see these brands as curses. Proof that they don't have a choice and the universe has already chosen their mate, like an arranged marriage. Some fall in love with another whose name does not provoke the mark, ruining the potential for a budding romance. After all, even if a relationship is destined to end in heartbreak, isn't the love worth it?
None of these thoughts bothered Hikari. She was a bit of a hopeless romantic, but never deep enough to warrant any heartbreak upon failure. She would occasionally flirt with those she thought she had a chance with but didn't curl up in a ball crying when the mark never showed. It would be there eventually; she didn't go out of her way to find the one. After all, she was only in high school. While a childhood sweetheart was a cute idea, she wasn't rushing her life. Especially now that she was a pro-hero-in-training.
She had been attending U.A. for a month, along with the rest of class 1-A. She was quite popular, being able to easily get along with any friend group she desired. While she enjoyed all of her peers, she was especially interested in Bakugou. He was one of the few people who managed to be a complete jackass while also retaining an interesting character. He was all but two-dimensional, but one had to get to know him before realizing this fact.
Katsuki, too, didn't care much for the mark that might eventually blemish his skin. As a matter of fact, he'd much rather go through his whole life without ever seeing it. The number one hero couldn't waste time on some petty romance. His brain only rarely entertained the topic. Today was one of the few instances where he thought of it, as he ate his lunch angrily. "Bakugou, you're going to stab right through the tray," a feminine voice interrupted him.
Katsuki's rust-red eyes shot over to take in the frame of the woman who was looking at him playfully. Hikari, one of his classmates with garish neon pink hair, and eyes similar to his. "Shut it, Sunshine," he growled back, making sure to pierce the next piece of steak with his fork with unnecessary force. The nickname would be cute in any other conversation, but Katsuki's delivery made it clear it was an insult. The way he said it somehow brought up the worse parts of sunshine: painful blindness, sweltering heat, and dry throats.
As Bakugou returned to his thoughts, ignoring everybody around him, Hikari just shook her head. He treated everybody like shit, but she couldn't hate him. He was different from everybody at the school, and his uniqueness was refreshing. That wasn't to say everybody else was bland. "He's been rather...distracted today," Hikari noted, turning toward Mina. She was chewing her own steak, talking to Kaminari. They both had full mouths, and Hikari could only wonder how they understood each other.
Mina swallowed and turned to Hikari. "It's his birthday," she whispered. "But he hates celebrating it. So, we're totally gonna surprise him with a trip to the arcade after school."
Hikari tilted her head back in curiosity. "Why wasn't I told?" she inquired.
"I didn't think you'd be interested, sorry," Mina smiled sheepishly. "Not a lot of people want to spend time with him."
Hikari nodded understandingly. The pink hero wasn't wrong. "I totally wanna see his reaction," she said. "Count me in."

"Dude, did you see they have a new game at the arcade?" Kaminari announced. Katsuki looked at him, immediately knowing something was up. The idiot wasn't a good actor, and Katsuki could tell he was nervous about something. Luckily for Kaminari, Katsuki didn't care. He simply looked back down at his phone. "Let's check it out!" The electric hero grabbed the blonde's arm, lightly tugging him toward the building. That didn't last long, as Katsuki quickly pried his arm away from him with a glare.
"I don't care about a dumb game," the explosive teenager said, already turning away from his companion.
"Come on, you go there every week," Kaminari reminded him. "Do you have anything better to do? Oh, wait, you're probably scared that you can't beat me at it."
Then Katsuki was walking toward the arcade. Kaminari smiled triumphantly. As the doors were thrown open, Katuki looked around to see there was nobody in the arcade. All the lights and games were on, there was a bored-looking teen behind the counter, and music played, but there was nobody else. The floor was a blue so dark it was easy to mistake as black, and different colored triangles were scattered through the carpet. It looked awfully '80s. "The hell?" He narrowed his eyes, scanning the room. There was a shadow peeking from behind one of the games. He reached his arm out to stop Kaminari from venturing further in, his eyes staring intently at it. Somebody was waiting to ambush them.
Katsuki was prepared to blast the assaulter in the face, but he quickly refrained when he realized he knew the person who popped out. Sero revealed him, along with three others scattered about the room: Kirishima, Ashido, and Kagami. "Surprise!" they yelled, before quickly approaching him. Mina explained the situation. "Before you get mad, we didn't plan a huge celebration or anything. We rented out - or rather, Momo rented out - the arcade for the evening. It's just the six of us, no cake or anything, just playing games."
With an annoyed expression, Katsuki looked over the building. After a moment of consideration, he smiled wickedly. "By the end of the night, my initials will be at the top of each leaderboard."
The six quickly dispersed throughout the room, eager to prove their worth by getting their names on the high score list. Sounds of buttons being pressed aggressively and tickets spitting out through trays soon filled the arcade as if it was a full house. There were shouts of friendly competition, and not-so-friendly competition(mainly from Bakugou) and cheers of success and cries of defeat. The evening ed by faster than any of them could have anticipated, and they soon began to retire for the night with their prizes.
Hikari hadn't even noticed when everybody except her and Bakugou had left. She had been wrapped up in a game, completely unaware of her surroundings. It wasn't until after she was done, and her shout of victory echoed through silence that she realized the two of them were alone. Bakugou was exchanging his tickets for prizes. Hikari walked up to him without even gathering her own spoils, looking through his loot. "These sticky hands? You like these?" she asked, teasing him.
"Shut it, Sunshine," he repeated his sentiments from the morning. "It's an easy way to hit the people without the teachers getting on my ass about starting a fight."
"I have a name, you know," Hikari pouted in a joking manner, but Bakugou had his back turned to her. "You could call me Hikari."
"No," was his only response.
"C'mon, Katsuki~" she drew out his name, earning her a hard glare from Bakugou.
"I will not hesitate to hit you. Not with a sticky hand," he threatened.
"What's the matter, Katsuki?" Hikari teased. "If you want me to stop calling you Katsuki, just call me Hikari. Just once. Pleeease?"
Tyically, Bakugou wouldn't be one to give in so easily. But he absolutely hated people calling him his first name like they're good friends, and nobody else was around. So, he repeated the same sentiment. "Shut it, Hikari." The pink-haired woman smiled with glee, glad to have drawn it out of him. Her gleeful expression switched to confusion as she saw Bakugou quickly turn away. Was he blushing? And...shining?
No, she was shining, not him. She looked down at herself as the light faded, noticing a new mark on her arm. It resembled a tattoo, but she had never gotten a tattoo. The best way she could describe it was a collection of small fireworks, each different colors. "Hah! No way!" she exclaimed, the full gravity of the situation not hitting her. "Katsuki, look!" She held up her arm to show him, but he was quickly gathering his prizes.
"Good for you," he threw over his shoulder.
"What- you don't have one?" she asked quizzically.
"Like hell I'd ever get the mark," he snipped back, but she was well aware of the way he was keeping his arm pressed against his torso as if hiding something. The teenager running the prize booth raised an eyebrow at the two of them before heading to an employee room.
Of course Katsuki had the mark. He had slipped up and said somebody's name. He had thought that making one exception one time would be fine. There was no way he was destined to be with this rando. He just wanted to go back to the dorms and rub his skin raw until the mark was gone. But when he glanced at Hikari, he found a dumb smile on her face. She knew he had it too. "Come on, can't we just talk about it?" she asked. With his prizes in his arms, Katsuki shoved past her toward the door, but she followed.
"I know you don't like romance," she continued, "and I'm not saying we should date. But come on, this is important. You can't just ignore it. People are bound to see it eventually, even if you tried to hide it."
Katsuki paused, turning toward her. "I'm a pro hero. I don't have time for romance. This dumb mark doesn't mean anything," he said. But he didn't keep walking, he stood and waited to see what Hikari wanted to propose.
"Well, I find you very interesting," she said blatantly. "And, we don't have to go official, but...I'd love to spend more time with you."
"Leave me alone," was his final response before leaving. Hikari watched him leave, her heart deflating. She knew he wasn't a hopeless romantic. It was hard to imagine him in a relationship with anybody, even close friends of his like Kirishima or Kaminari. Well, mostly because she had a hard time believing he was gay, or if he was, he'd never it it. Even so, she felt heartbroken that he woulnd't even consider a possible relationship. Was she really so annoying?

"No way!" Mina rushed to Katsuki's side, lifting his branded arm. He quickly yanked it away, glaring at her. He had considered covering it but knew that Hikari was right. People would find out eventually. "This totally wasn't here last night." His stomach sank as she said those words. He could handle others knowing he had the mark, but the last thing he needed was anybody knowing who shared his experience. He hadn't thought through the fact that his friends would be able to put two and two together.
He sat at the table as everybody else craned their necks to confirm what they saw. He tried his best not to look at Hikari but spared one glance at her own arm. The tension in his guy disappeared as he saw she had covered it with an armlet. They wouldn't be able to guess right off the bat. But, why would she hide it if she knew it was pointless?
Only Hikari knew the answer. She knew how embarrassed Bakugou would be about this development, so she had covered her own as well, thinking none would be any the wiser. The last thing she had expected was for Bakugou to show up displaying it without any effort to disguise it. As the rest of the bakusquad nagged him about who his soulmate was, Hikari ate her meal silently. Overnight, she had considered how big of a deal it was, that they were meant to be together. She wasn't in love with him, but...she could easily see herself falling in love with him.
She was lost in her thoughts so long that she didn't notice the bell that dismissed them from lunch. A scarred hand gripped her shoulder, pulling her out of her reverie. She looked up to see an irritated Bakugou. Glancing around her revealed the room to be mostly empty, a few meandering students making their way out. "You can't be late for class," Bakugou muttered.
"Oh, you didn't need to worry," Hikari brushed him off. "I would have realized the room was empty soon enough. It's sweet that you were worried, though."
"Don't think too much of it," he grumbled. "I just figured, if the universe wants me to care for you...I don't want to piss it off."
A grin spread across Hikari's face. He made it sound like the universe forced him to care, but she knew that wasn't the case. Even the universe couldn't tell Bakugou what to do. She stood, and they both walked out to the hall. "So, why didn't you hide your mark?" she asked.
"As you said, it's pointless," he replied. "But, I'm more curious as to why you didn't hide yours."
"I didn't want you getting embarrassed," she shrugged. "Unlike you, I'm considerate of others."
Bakugou kept his eyes trained forward. "Racoon eyes won't stop bothering me about whose name I said," he complained. "And I know she'll never stop asking."
"Make somebody up," Hikari suggested.
"You'd be okay with that?" he asked, glancing over at her. "I mean, I know you're not like me. You want romance. Nobody else will date you if they knew you already found your..." He didn't want to say soul mate.
"I'll survive," she shrugged. "Yeah, I want a relationship, but the only option is you. And, you don't want a relationship. The last thing I'd want to do is date somebody who doesn't want to date me."
They were silent for a while as they walked down the hall. Bakugou chewed his lip thoughtfully, while Hikari watched intently. He wanted to say something. Instead of coaxing it out of him, she just stopped walking, giving him time to work up the courage. "I wouldn't...hate dating you," he finally phrased.
The emotions running through Hikari's heart were indescribable. Mostly happiness that Bakugou didn't hate her. There was also a bit of affection, born from the sheer cuteness of his willingness to date her despite his usual hateful attitude. "Oh my god, you're a tsundere!" she giggled.
"I immediately regret saying anything," he said, quickly resuming his walk.
Hikari quickly caught up, looping her arm through his. He didn't pull away. "For what it's worth, Katsuki, I wouldn't hate dating you either."
