The Rasga mortalha (scientific name Tyto furcata ), also known as Suindara, it is an owl that is reputed to be a bad omen. This owl is present in all Brazilian territory, but their legend is more popular mainly in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil.

When it flies, the friction of its wings make a noise similar to that a rag being torn, hence the name rasga mortalha which means to tear the shroud. It is believed that when this owl es over a house or land on the roof and hoot someone in that house will die.

Origin legend:

Legend has it that a young woman named Suindara who worked as a weeper and was the daughter of Eliel, a sorcerer feared in the region. Suindara was clever and respected, and everyone called her a "white owl", she had a normal life, except to be a weeper.

Suindara starts dating a young man named Ricardo, who was the son of a countess named Ruth, this woman was known for being strict, prejudiced and would never accept the relationship.

Unfortunately for the couple Ruth discovered the romance and arranged a fake date with Suindara, ordering to an employee to kill her.

For being very dear the city was in mourning, burying her and making a beautiful white owl in her crypt. Her father found out about the crime and performed a powerful revenge ritual against his daughter's murderer. He reaches the grave and makes the spirit of the young woman enter the owl statue, making it come alive. Then the owl went to the balcony of the window where Ruth was sleeping and began to make its characteristic hoot, at dawn the countess was found dead with her clothes torn.

After that, the owl began to make its terrifying hoot whenever someone is close to death.

However it's worth which this is a legend without any scientific comprovation, and there are even those who, contrary to the legend, believe that owl is lucky because it acts in the control of urban pests, such as rats and bats.

I don't think It's bad, I actually like owls, but I thought it would be cool to bring a Brazilian tale to this challenge. The legend is probably because of the sounds it makes and being a kind of nocturnal bird of prey I think.
