Ok look, I love many cultures, oft some may be controversial. But when it comes down to it - there’s really no place like home.
So yes, I’m a bit biased but I have lived in Australia for 22 years, I was born and raised here. I know the ins and outs of the entire lifestyle. I went on a cruise this year to New Caledonia, my first time outside of the country. I got homesick within less than 24 hours… Mind you, I was on a boat surrounded by what looked like an endless ocean so maybe that didn’t exactly help.
But Australian culture is somewhat my culture. Now you may be wondering, what exactly is it? Australia is a multicultural country of course, that is part of our overall culture. Accepting that everyone’s culture is our culture. Many of us say ‘that’s unAustralian’ if someone gets hurt, regardless of skin colour or background. Many of us the sport of this country. All of us know about the National Rugby League (NRL) & Australian Football League (AFL) & of course, Tennis & Cricket as well as our beloved, annual Melbourne Cup. There’s always going to be controversies about sport but we are a sporting nation also.
We are a young nation, around 200 or so years old and have not seen much violence. World War One is our most celebrated historical event that all of us can agree on. We called our troops ‘ANZAC’ (Australian New Zealand Army Corps). New Zealand is our neighbour and have been around almost the same time as us. We have a few neighbours but when it comes to New Zealand, they are like our brother. They may not always like us but it would feel different without them.
We call it ANZAC Day on the 25 of April when Commonwealth troops from Australian Colonies and New Zealand went to fight in Gallipoli and many of our sons did not return home from war.
As a result, many of the women started working jobs to help the economy along through the next two decades and female independence sparked within New Zealand and it too changed the globe.
I will not talk about our Native Communities as we are having a constitutional vote in a few months and I wish to keep politics out of this so I’m moving onto foods. I know what Australia was responsible for and I do not condone it, however, it is Australia’s business to deal with and no one else’s. It may not be fixed in my life time as people continue to blindly hate one another rather than sort out the problem…
Some of our favourite foods you might’ve seen are the Sausage Sandwiches and Vegemite Toast. Since we are a sporting nation, Australia loves having BBQs. They’re a great way to spend time with family and friends and often or not, you’ll find a small number of alcoholic empty drinks. Australia is somewhat of an alcoholic nation but majority only drink to enjoy ourselves after a long day’s hardwork. Most of us don’t drink silly over get togethers as we’ve seen the impacts of alcohol abuse but that doesn’t mean that each alcoholic is different! Having one drink a night may not be healthy but absurdly enough, it’s in our nature. This is another way to see Australia’s multiculturalism. Just go to any pub and see all the different type of drinks people are having.
My dad drinks whiskey.
My friend drinks it also.
My other friend drinks whiskey.
I, my mother, sister & other friends drink vodka.
Many Australians love bourbon and some may go for a beer.
Even then, I’m sure we’re drinking very different brands that originated from different parts of the globe. But believe it or not, Australia makes majority of her own food. Factories between Victoria & Queensland, using their farms, help make the goods from either imported goods or the factories and brands came from us. Like Nestle.
Australia is a nation built on differences, yet this should be a place where everyone can retreat from their differences and harmoniously enjoy a beautiful sunset. Again, I might be biased but my favourite thing about Australia is it’s gorgeous sunsets. The weather is usually warm and the animals here are all kinds of crazy. Many iconic landmarks, fun culture, Australia is meant to be a beautiful nation that can find peace. I hope it stays that way, because I’d hate to see others ruin something that I cherish :blue_heart:  🤍
