Welcome! This post is meant for the roleplay

based wold-building of hell and takes meny

creative liberties though it does have a lot of

accurate information as well so if you wish to

learn something you can read this too!

Whenever the information is taken from a

source of validity it will be sighted and probably

quotes to back it up which is how you may

see the difference between the "factual" and

my creative work. This is because though

I have some personal ideas I wish to exercise

to make hell more well rounded I also enjoy

basing my ideas within legitimate grounds.

I apologise for any mistake, there's quite a

lot of writing that I couldn't edit as much as

I wanted on this deadline.

According to the Divine Comedy by the

italian writer Dante Alighieri there are nine

circles of hell: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed,

Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery.

Several of these circles even have their

own set of sub circles where different

subsets of the sins reside. In this part of

the post I will explain the circles and whom

I personally believe to be in charge of each,

though in Dante's inferno no demon ruled

over any particular subset of the circle.

Within the story itself Virgil, the Roman

poet, leads Dante to the gates of Hell,

which bear the writing:

❝ Abandon All Hope, You Who Enter Here. ❞

Firstly there is Limbo, the outer boundary

of Hell, just across the River Acheron (one

of the three Infernal rivers of hell). The

people that reside here are people that,

though not sinful, were never baptized

and/or were never Christian at all.

They are punished by living within an

inferior form of Heaven which makes

the whole concept of hell just a little bit

less horrendous. Despite all that Limbo is

described as a dark, foreboding place of

grand buildings and structures, though it

isn't dangerous, nor are people within it

hurt. Within this realm there are virtuous

statues of the non-Christians that achieved

great feats to honor those righteous people

despite their "wrong" beliefs (mind, I don't

give a flying f what you believe personally).

The residents of this circle live in a castle

with seven gates which symbolize the

seven virtues: Chastity, Abstinence, Liberality,

Diligence, Patience, Kindness and Humility.

It has to be a gainet ass castle considering

how many people aren't Christian. Then, on

the opposite side of the citadel of Limbo, near

the end of the circle we would normally see

the judge of this circle, the serpentine King

Minos, Judge of the Damned whom

decides where souls go but as I'm trying

to remove the greek figures from this tale

we instead find Raguel, the angel of justice

alongside Mastema, the angel of injustice.

The two decide the where the souls go

together.

Now to the second circle where the lustful

and adulterous go, or generally anyone

controlled by their hormones: Lust. Here

everyone that fell to the sin is blown

needlessly and aimlessly by a strong wind

representing their ion:

❝ as the lovers drifted into self-indulgence

and were carried away by their ions, so

now they drift for ever. The bright,

voluptuous sin is now seen as it is – a

howling darkness of helpless discomfort. ❞

As lust involves mutual indulgences it's still

concidered one of the last self-centered crimes

and is therefore only the second, and first

punishable, layer of hell. Asmodeus rules here

and he is having the time of his life.

Within the third circle the gluttonous are being

punished within a landscape filled with putrefying

mud and living organs, because why what is hell

if not inventive? The souls within this circle are

punished by the icy and violent storm which

rains foul, decaying sludge and mud onto them.

The storm also rains worms and human wastes

if hell is being more of a d**k that day. These

people are then forced to gurgle around in the

solid waste and mud for days. Unlike Lust,

Gluttony is a self-centered sin, and, hence it is

considered much more heinous. The gluttons

grovel in the mud by themselves, sightless and

heedless of their neighbors, symbolizing the cold,

selfish, and empty sensuality of their lives. This

circle is governed Beelzebub, the sin of gluttony

himself.

Now to the Fourth circle of hell: Greed. Our first

circle that is split into two subsets (aka sub circles):

One for the ones who spent lavishly and the other

for those who hoarded their ritches.

❝ Here, too, I saw a nation of lost souls,

far more than were above: they strained their

chests against enormous weights, and

with mad howls rolled them at one another.

Then in haste they rolled them back, one

party shouting out: "Why do you hoard?"

and the other: "Why do you waste?" ❞

This circle is ruled by Mammon, the sin of greed

(though within the Devin comedy it is instead

Plutus, the God of Wealth) and his legions of

demons.

Now Circle number five: Wrath, a circle located

within the stinky, filthy part of river Styx. Alright

so within this circle the wrathful fight each other

viciously on the surface of the rivers slime, choking

each other and stopping each other from expressing

or speaking at all. The act represents their anger

which when expressed would harm other people.

This is all while the sullen (the ively wrathful)

lie beneath the water, withdrawn from everything.

❝ Into a black sulkiness which can find no

joy in God or man or the universe. ❞

Within this circle we can see the city of Dis which

is itself surrounded by the Stygian marsh. The

walls of Dis are guarded by fallen angels. This

circle is governed by the demon Abyzou, one of

the four queen of hell.

In the sixth circle is for the heretics, the souls of

people who denied the cores of Christianity, are

found and trapped in flaming tombs. No need to

govern this area of closed caskets, even if it is

the first step into lower hell.

Many of us say things like "An eye for an eye

will make the whole world blind." Or "Violence

is the last refuge of the incompetent" but still,

we often end up resorting to it and if we do it

too often we end up in this circle of hell, the

seventh one: Violence. This circles is separated

into three sections, classified by different types

of violence: Others, yourself and what Lucifer

would call "his egotistical father".

Within the subcircle of violence against god one

will find themselves in a barren desert that is

surrounded by a line of wilted trees. A land of

only death an suffering, even if it is magnificently

spooky and beautiful. Though most people tend

to not really enjoy it as they die of thirst over

and over again here. There is a river within

this circle, ironically enough, a red one, as well as

a ston pathway though no one knows where it leads,

it's probably better they don't. The most annoying

part of this sub - circle though is probably the

statue of the Old Man of Crete, from which three

of the rivers in Hell are formed as tears fall from

the statue.

Then there's the sub circle of Violence Against

Self. It's a forest created out of the people

that have hurt themselves: suicide or self abuse

of any kind. They were turned into something

they could not hurt themselves as: threes

and those who destroyed their own livelihoods

through wanton waste are transformed into

spirits that are forced to roam the forest. No

demons really punish them as they have done

so themselves already.

Then the last one of the three is Violence

Against Neighbors or/and others.

❝ With our trusty escort we walked the

boundary of the boiling crimson, where

we heard the cries of the boiled shades

shrieking in their agony. With some, the

river rose above their eyes. ❞

Now we're in the eighth circle: Fraud, to which

one can get on the back of Geryon, hells lovely,

lovely citizen. Obviously not native but he did

come here during the ancient times from

Greece. This lovely being is of course a

three-bodied, four-winged giant who lived

on the island of Erytheia but now lives in hell.

Alright, moving on from out taxi to the actual

circle. This circle divides into ten bolgias which

pretty much translates to "ditches" while the full

name: Malebolge adds the word "evil" to that, so

Evil ditch.

In bolgia one you will find Asmodeus, if he's

not in the circle of lust of course, here demons

keep panderers and seducer of the fraudulent

kind, their getting wiped by some lovely demons.

Not as much a punishment as a demonic kink

really. In bolgia two you will find the flatterers

and the fraudulent. All immersed in dung. Now,

within bolgia three demons keep the once guilty

of simony, you know the people that buy or sell

ecclesiastical privileges, they are stuck in a hole

upside down, with the soles of their feet burning

with flames. In bolgia four we'll find the

Soothsayers, false prophets, whatever you wish

to call them. Their walking with his head turned

backwards! So fetching.

Then in bolag five you have your grafters that

are immersed in a boiling pitch. Then in six you

have your hypocrites walking while wearing

heavy leaden robes, painted with gold, of course.

We gotta punish is style. Then the thieves

(seven), that have their hands tied behind their

backs by snakes and suffer horrible

metamorphosis, you know because it's kind of

funny to demons. Then in eight we have evil

counselors and advisers whom roam a pit,

wrapped in a flame. Coming closer to the end

we have divisive individuals whom get punished

by being mutilated with a sword. So now, to end

this off we have the counterfeiters whom suffer

a quite high fever— and other illnesses as well as

other afflictions, such as: stench, filth and fevers

of horrific proportions. This is because they are

the "disease" of society.

Now to the final circle: Treachery! Here we find

Setan (whom is separate from Lucifer in my

version), a creature that has has three faces and

is using all three to chew some ass**les: his left

mouth is hosting Brutus, the right Cassius, and the

center mouth with Judas Iscariot. All screaming

and moaning in excruciating pain. This circle is

present over a gainet frozen lake: Cocytus. This

lake of ice is divided into four concentric rings (or "rounds"): betrayal of family ties, betrayal of

community ties, betrayal of guests, and betrayal

of lords. In the first round (Caina) we have Traitors

to their Kindred where the guilty have their necks

and heads showing out of the ice and are allowed

to bow their heads, allowing some protection from

the freezing wind. Then within round two (Antenora)

we find traitors of their country whom are have their

heads above the ice too, but they cannot bend

their necks. Then in the third area (Ptolomaea) we

find the traitors of gust whom lie supine in the ice

while their tears freeze in their eye sockets, sealing

them with small visors of crystal – even the comfort

of weeping is denied them. Now, finally, in the fourth

area (Judecca) we find traitors to lords where all of

the sinners are fully encapsulated in ice, distorted

and twisted in every conceivable position. The

sinners present an image of utter immobility: it is

impossible to talk with any of them. And that were

the nine circles of hell!

Alright, so before I start I want to clarify that

I personally don't use 'Paradise Lost' as a

sorce often because it is contradictory to

several other information throughout

abrahamic text that I much prefer. Despite

that I do like the concept of a place in hell that

is just for demons/fallen angels— similarly to

how Pandemonium was within Paradise Lost.

Therefore the concept within this parts is based

of the book but non of the landscape or

mechanics I came up with is from there as my

concept of where demons would reside is quite

different from John Miltons. Alright, lets get to

the point now, shall we?

Underneath the 9th circle of hell (Treachery)

there is a realm where only demons and fallen

angels are found. This placed is called Mayhem

and in the middle of it is Lucifer castle where the

meny demon councils resides: a building named

Melancholy. Sadly this castle is the subject of

this part so lets focus on the lands outside of

it. The land of Mayhem itself is not one of berrin

waistlands or even brimston as many would

assume, it is one of chaotic nature and creeping

danger. This land is made out of several natural

habitats: a desert, a jungle, a city of old that

surrounds Melancholy and wild northern forest—

all fighting for dominance of the area and causing

chaos of unfathomable proportions. Sometimes

most demons deeply enjoy.

Now, before we get into the specific habitats I

wish to explain something about (my version of)

hell. This version of hells ecosystem is

predominantly Influenced by hell itself. You see,

hell is not a place made by Lucifers fall— it is a

creature awakened by it. A part of gods power

that shows a different part of his nature, one

he uses subconsciously and it is powerful. It's

not a creator, according to the bible no one but

God is but it's capable of altering, mutating and

shaping what is there into something new. Anything

that enters this realm is changed on a molecular

basis, well anything that is non divine (God, Angel,

Mythical beings, etc.). This being swears it's loyalty

to darling dear Lucifer.

Alright! Lets get to the specific habitats now!

Within the desert lands the sand is freezing and

causes frost bite to anyone that as little as

touches it, demon or not. Above this desert there

is the only place with Mayhem that looks up

into treachery, the ice of the river above patching

the hole in the cave ceiling, snow and melted

water falling into the freezing sand and turning to

sharp ice on impact, similarly to the blood that was

spilled there. While walking through this desert you

might just hear the whisperes of Demons lost in

battle— and their advice is always horrible.

The only source of heat is this area is the lava

river that run through it the middle of it, though

the forest and underneath the walls of Mayham.

City.

The desert borderes a thick semi bioluminescence

forest that resembles northern fauna. This forest is

quite dark and foreboding with several glowing,

toxic mushrooms in hues of blue, green and pink

lighting it up at "night". You see, the plants within

this area are very hostile and many of them are

toxic though instead of killing they stalk and

make people fall asleep for a generation or two.

This area belongs to demons of fate and demons

that train families. There are several notable plant

mutations in this forest that I wish to speak about:

Omvidtum (aka the all seeing growth):

This plant is a rose of either white, black or red—

each of the colour being connected to the rest of

it's kin. Each of the rose colours follow someone

else with the red ones swearing allegiance

to Lucifer, The black ones to Lilith and the

White once to Leviathan.

These rose like plant have an eye in the middle

of their bud and can move, using their roots as

legs of sorts. They speak a languege only

certain demons understand too, sadly Lilith is

not one of them so even though they swore

loyalty to her she has no idea what they are

saying. These plants also behave as children

around their leaders, often whining for attention.

Exemtus (aka Copy cat):

This is a plant that look like a set of gray

branches that build themselves around a

reddish ball, the heart, to protect it. The

center part of this flower stores blood of

the demons (and animal) it has bitten and

used them to morph itself into a creature

reassembling the DNA profile of the creature

it has bitten.

Handsy:

Yes, an idiot named this plant but it's a fitting

name nonetheless. This plant is like quicksand

but made out of bloody human hands that drag

you downwards..... no one knows where, but

it can't be nice.

There is more, of course, but you wouldn't wish

me to list all my ideas— we would be here all day.

Then there are the tropics, populated by Incubus

and governed by the four queens of hell:

Agrat bat Mahlat, Lilith, Naamah and Abyzou.

This area is especially dangerous, and not because

of its people. It's a wild forest that is dipped in

impossible heat that created a lot of deadly creepy

crawlies. This place is grown over, difficult to move

through unless you know the top of the trees like

a second home but it's also the only place in hell

with clean water, which gives it quite interesting

fauna. The poison in this area works for demons

like aphrodisiac though it would kill a human

immediately by smell alone and here are some

non aphrodisiac plant you should watch out for:

Ossitionem (aka the ribcage):

This is a set of closed in white, hot weather plants

that grow in the more tropical areas of Mayham.

It has long curling leaves that form something

resembling a ribcage around its thick stem. The

plants leaves become shorter and shorter then

closer to the ground area they get, forming

something resembling a spine too— come too

close and it might just crush you, at least it only

grows by water so it should be.... really hard

to avoid actually because it's everywhere.

Volia (aka flying monkey):

A plant that grows it trees and uses bait

resembling a demon or animal of the hell to

lure in someone. If the person even touches

this bait they get molded into it and

dragged up where it's green, meaty mouth is

waiting for dinner.

And that are all of the habitats in hell exept for

Mayham city which will be in the cities of hell

section! More about this habitats will e added

when a wiki compendium is created.
